This interactive MicroSim visualizes the relationship between engagement features and learning effectiveness in educational design. The scatter plot demonstrates a key principle in instructional design: more engagement is not always better. The relationship follows a curve of diminishing returns, where excessive gamification or entertainment features can actually distract from learning goals.
Understanding the Visualization
The chart displays:
- X-Axis (Engagement Features): The degree of interactive, gamified, or entertainment-focused elements in a design (0-10 scale)
- Y-Axis (Learning Effectiveness): How well the design achieves its educational objectives (0-10 scale)
- Trend Curve: Shows the theoretical relationship with diminishing returns beyond the optimal point
The Three Zones
