Gregor the Tree Frog — Mascot Style Guide

This page shows all six admonition styles for Gregor the Tree Frog, the pedagogical mascot for AP Biology. Use it as a reference when writing chapter content.

Welcome (Chapter Openings)

Use mascot-welcome at the start of each chapter to introduce the topic.

Gregor Welcomes You!

Welcome to AP Biology! I'm Gregor, your guide through the living world. Whether we're exploring the chemistry inside a cell or the dynamics of an entire ecosystem, I'll be right here with you. Let's investigate!

Thinking (Key Concepts)

Use mascot-thinking when introducing a major concept students must deeply understand.

Key Insight

Notice the pattern here: every major biological process — from photosynthesis to protein synthesis — depends on the same fundamental chemistry you learned in Unit 1. Biology is deeply connected.

Tip (Hints and Strategies)

Use mascot-tip for exam strategies, memory tricks, or shortcuts.

Gregor's Tip

When you see a question about enzyme inhibition on the AP exam, always ask: Does the inhibitor bind the active site or somewhere else? That single question tells you whether it's competitive or noncompetitive inhibition.

Warning (Common Mistakes)

Use mascot-warning to flag misconceptions or frequent errors.

Common Mistake

Don't confuse genotype and phenotype. The genotype is the genetic instruction set (DNA). The phenotype is the observable result. The same phenotype can come from different genotypes — that's why test crosses exist!

Celebration (Achievements)

Use mascot-celebration at the end of major sections or chapters.

Excellent Progress!

You've just worked through the entire central dogma — DNA replication, transcription, and translation. That's the molecular blueprint of life. Outstanding work, investigator!

Encourage (Difficult Content)

Use mascot-encourage before or during challenging sections where students often struggle.

You've Got This!

Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium feels intimidating at first — but once you see it as a null hypothesis for evolution (i.e., what happens when evolution is not occurring), it all clicks. Stick with it. You're closer than you think.

Neutral (General Purpose)

Use mascot-neutral for general sidebars, introductions, or any context where none of the specific poses fits.

A Note from Gregor

AP Biology covers a lot of ground — from atoms to ecosystems. Each unit builds on the last, so if something feels shaky, it's worth going back to reinforce it before moving forward.

Usage Rules

  • Use Gregor no more than 5–6 times per chapter
  • Do not stack multiple Gregor admonitions back-to-back
  • Keep Gregor's dialogue brief (1–4 sentences)
  • Always use the catchphrase "Let's investigate!" at least once per chapter welcome
