Searching: Finding the Needle

Searching is one of the most common operations in computer science. Think about all the searching you do every day: looking up a contact on your phone, finding a song on a streaming app, or searching the web. Under the hood, computers use search algorithms to find what you're looking for.

Linear Search: One at a Time

Linear search works on any list — sorted or unsorted. But here's the downside: if the list has a million elements and your target is the very last one (or not in the list at all), you'll have to check all million elements. That's a lot of flipping.

Binary Search: Divide and Conquer

What if the list is already sorted? Then we can do something much smarter. Binary search works by repeatedly cutting the list in half. At each step, you compare the target to the middle element:

  • If the target equals the middle element, you're done!
  • If the target is smaller, search the left half.
  • If the target is larger, search the right half.

Selection Sort: Find the Smallest, Repeat

Selection sort always makes the same number of comparisons regardless of the input, so its time complexity is ( O(n^2) ) in all cases. On the upside, it makes very few swaps — at most ( n - 1 ).

Insertion sort works the way most people sort playing cards. You pick up cards one at a time and insert each new card into its correct position among the cards you're already holding.

Start with the second element. Compare it to the first — if it's smaller, shift the first element right and insert. Then take the third element and insert it in the right spot among the first two. Continue until every element has been inserted into the sorted portion.

  • After the loop (i = n): data[0..n-1] is the entire array, and it's sorted. That's our answer!

This three-step reasoning (initialization, maintenance, termination) is a powerful technique for verifying that loops do what they claim.

Big-O notation is a mathematical shorthand that describes how an algorithm's running time (or memory usage) grows as the input size increases. It doesn't tell you the exact time in seconds — instead, it tells you the growth rate.

Think of it this way: if you're mailing letters, the cost grows with the number of letters. Big-O tells you whether that growth is steady (one extra stamp per letter) or explosive (doubling with each letter).

We use Big-O to answer the question: "If I double the size of my input, what happens to the running time?"

Time Complexity

Time complexity measures how the number of operations an algorithm performs grows with input size ( n ). It's what we usually mean when we say an algorithm is "fast" or "slow."

We focus on the worst case because it gives us a guarantee: "No matter what input you throw at me, I'll never be slower than this." You can also analyze best-case and average-case, but worst-case is the standard.

Space Complexity

Space complexity measures how much extra memory an algorithm needs beyond the input itself. An algorithm that sorts a list in place (like selection sort or insertion sort) uses ( O(1) ) extra space — just a few temporary variables. Merge sort creates new lists during merging, so it uses ( O(n) ) extra space.
