Edge-Triggered: The Precise Moment

An edge-triggered circuit responds only at the moment of a clock transition—either rising (0→1) or falling (1→0)—rather than during the entire high or low level. This is the key difference between flip-flops and latches.

Remember our transparent latch problem from the last chapter? With a level-sensitive latch, data could change the output any time the enable was high. With edge-triggering, the window for data capture shrinks to an infinitesimally brief moment: the clock edge itself.

Think of edge-triggering like a starting gun at a race. The runners don't start "while the gun is being fired"—they start at the exact moment of the bang. Similarly, flip-flops respond at the exact moment of the clock edge.

Why Edges Work Better

Edge-triggering solves the race-through problem because the "capture window" is essentially zero width. Data can't race through multiple flip-flops in a single edge because each flip-flop only looks at its input for that one instant.

Positive Edge Triggered: Rising to the Occasion

A positive edge triggered flip-flop (also called rising-edge triggered) responds when the clock transitions from low to high (0→1). This is the most common type of flip-flop in modern digital design.

When we say a flip-flop is positive-edge triggered:

  • It ignores the clock when it's stable at 0
  • It ignores the clock when it's stable at 1
  • It only captures data at the 0→1 transition

Why is positive edge triggering so popular? Historically, it became the default because:

  1. Early TTL logic naturally supported rising-edge detection

Negative Edge Triggered: Falling with Style

A negative edge triggered flip-flop (also called falling-edge triggered) responds when the clock transitions from high to low (1→0). While less common as the primary flip-flop type, it's essential for certain timing arrangements.

When would you use falling-edge triggering? Several scenarios:

  • Two-phase systems: Using both edges of the same clock can double your effective logic time
  • Timing alignment: When data arrives late in the clock high period, falling edge gives more setup time

The D Flip-Flop: The Workhorse of Sequential Logic

The D flip-flop (Data flip-flop) is the most important and widely used edge-triggered storage element. It has one data input (D), one clock input (CLK), and two outputs (Q and \(\overline{Q}\)).

The behavior is beautifully simple:

  • At each active clock edge, Q takes on whatever value D had at that moment
  • Between clock edges, Q holds its value regardless of what D does

The D flip-flop is everywhere in digital design:

Master-Slave Flip-Flop: How Edge-Triggering Works

How do we actually build an edge-triggered flip-flop? One classic approach is the master-slave flip-flop, which uses two latches in series with opposite enable signals.

When CLK is low (0):

  • Master is opaque (holding its value)
  • Slave is transparent (passing master's output to Q)
  • Any changes at D are ignored by the system

When CLK is high (1):

  • Master is transparent (D passes through to master output)
  • Slave is opaque (holding, so Q doesn't change yet)
  • D is captured by the master but not yet visible at Q

At the falling edge (1→0):

  • Master becomes opaque (freezes whatever D was)
  • Slave becomes transparent (passes frozen value to Q)
  • This is when Q changes!

So a master-slave flip-flop with positive-level master and negative-level slave is actually falling-edge triggered! To get rising-edge triggering, you invert the clock to the master, making it transparent when CLK is low.

Why Master-Slave?

The master-slave configuration is clever because it never has both latches transparent simultaneously. This eliminates the race-through problem inherent in a single transparent latch. The "hand-off" from master to slave happens atomically at the clock edge.

Modern flip-flops don't always use the traditional master-slave structure—they may use more sophisticated edge-detection circuits—but the master-slave concept beautifully illustrates why edge-triggering works.

The JK Flip-Flop: More Than Set-Reset

The JK flip-flop is like the SR flip-flop's smarter cousin who went to engineering school. It has two control inputs—J and K—but eliminates the dreaded "invalid state" that plagued SR latches.

Why would you use a JK flip-flop instead of a D flip-flop?

JK Toggle Mode: The Secret Weapon

The JK toggle mode (J=K=1) deserves special attention because it's incredibly useful for building counters.

When J=K=1, each clock edge causes Q to flip to its opposite value:

Toggle Mode in Action

The seconds digit of a digital clock needs to count 0-9 and then reset. While this requires more than just toggle mode (you need to detect when to reset), the basic counting structure uses JK flip-flops in toggle mode with additional gating.

The T Flip-Flop: Toggle Simplified

The T flip-flop (Toggle flip-flop) is the JK flip-flop with J and K tied together. Since J always equals K, you only have two possible states:

  • T=0: Hold (equivalent to J=K=0)
  • T=1: Toggle (equivalent to J=K=1)

When reading datasheets, pay close attention to:

Symbol Variations

Preset Input: Setting to 1 Immediately

The preset input (sometimes called PRE, SET, or S) forces the flip-flop output Q to 1 immediately, regardless of the clock or data inputs.

Preset is typically an asynchronous input, meaning it works immediately without waiting for a clock edge. When PRE is asserted:

  • Q goes to 1 immediately
  • Q̄ goes to 0 immediately
  • Clock and D inputs are ignored

Preset inputs are usually active-low (indicated by PRĒ or PRE with a bubble), meaning you assert them by pulling the signal to 0:

When would you use preset?

  • Initialization: Set a known starting state at power-up
  • Emergency override: Force a state regardless of clock timing

Clear Input: Resetting to 0 Immediately

The clear input (sometimes called CLR, RESET, or R) is the opposite of preset—it forces Q to 0 immediately, regardless of clock or data.

Like preset, clear is typically asynchronous and active-low:

Never Assert Both!

Just like S=R=1 in an SR latch, asserting both preset and clear simultaneously is invalid. Both would try to force Q to different values—Q can't be 0 and 1 at the same time. Design your reset logic carefully to prevent this.

Asynchronous Reset: The Emergency Override

An asynchronous reset is a reset signal that takes effect immediately, independent of the clock. When asserted, the flip-flop clears (or sets, if it's a preset) right now, not at the next clock edge.

Asynchronous resets are crucial for:

  1. Power-on initialization: The system must start in a known state before the clock even starts running
  2. Emergency shutdown: Safety systems need to reset instantly, not wait for a clock
  3. Hard reset: When you press the reset button, you want immediate response

Notice that Q responds to CLR instantly, not at a clock edge. This is what makes it asynchronous—not synchronized to the clock.

The symbol convention for asynchronous reset is typically:

  • Input goes directly to the flip-flop core (not through clock-triggered logic)
  • Active-low indicated by bubble
  • Often labeled CLR̄, RST̄, or AR̄

The Price of Asynchrony

Asynchronous resets are powerful but dangerous. Because they ignore the clock, they can cause timing violations if released at the wrong moment. We'll see why this matters when we discuss metastability later in this chapter.

Synchronous Reset: Patient and Predictable

A synchronous reset only takes effect at the next clock edge, like all other inputs. When asserted, the flip-flop will clear—but only when the clock arrives.

Synchronous resets are implemented by gating the D input:

If SRST=1 (reset asserted), D_effective = 0, so Q becomes 0 at the next clock edge. If SRST=0 (normal operation), D_effective = D, so normal behavior continues.

Advantages of synchronous reset:

  • Timing predictability: Changes only happen at clock edges
  • No timing violations: Reset release can't cause metastability
