Foundations of Geometry

Summary

This chapter introduces the undefined terms (point, line, plane) and basic geometric objects that form the foundation of all geometry. You'll learn how to use precise mathematical language to describe spatial relationships and develop both inductive and deductive reasoning skills. By the end of this chapter, you'll understand how mathematicians build logical arguments from fundamental assumptions and be able to identify and classify basic geometric figures and their properties.

Introduction: The Building Blocks of Geometry

Geometry is the study of shapes, sizes, and positions of objects in space. Just as a house needs a solid foundation, geometry is built upon fundamental ideas called undefined terms. These are concepts so basic that we accept them without formal definition—we understand them intuitively through our experience with the physical world.

In this chapter, you'll discover how mathematicians construct an entire logical system from just three undefined terms: point, line, and plane. You'll also learn two powerful types of reasoning that allow you to make discoveries and prove your ideas with certainty.

The Core Terms: Point, Line, and Plane

Point

A point represents a specific location in space. It has no length, width, or thickness—it exists purely as a position. We name points with capital letters and represent them as small dots in drawings.

Key characteristics:

  • Has zero dimensions (no size)
  • Represents exact location only
  • Named with capital letters (Point A, Point B, etc.)

Think of a point like a star in the night sky or a specific address on a map—it marks an exact location but doesn't take up any space itself.

Line

A line is a straight path that extends infinitely in both directions. Like a point, a line has no thickness—only length that continues forever. We use arrows on both ends to show that it never stops.

Key characteristics:

  • One-dimensional (has length only)
  • Extends infinitely in both directions
  • Perfectly straight
  • Named by any two points on it: line \(AB\) or \(\overleftrightarrow{AB}\)

You can think of a line as the path left by a moving point, or like the edge where two walls meet—perfectly straight and extending as far as you can imagine.

Plane

A plane is a flat surface that extends infinitely in all directions. Like a perfectly smooth, endless tabletop or a calm ocean surface, a plane has length and width but no thickness.

Key characteristics:

  • Two-dimensional (has length and width)
  • Extends infinitely in all directions
  • Perfectly flat
  • Named by any three non-collinear points or by a single capital letter (Plane M)

The floor of your classroom, the surface of a mirror, or a perfectly calm lake all approximate planes in the physical world—though real planes extend infinitely in geometry.

Points and Lines Explorer

Learning Objective: Students will apply their understanding of points, lines, by manipulating interactive geometric objects they create and observing their properties. (Bloom's Taxonomy: Applying)

Specification:

Create an interactive p5.js simulation allowing students to add and edit points and lines. When setup() runs, it will generate 10 blue points with labels "A" to "J" and place them randomly on the screen.

Each point is a small colored circle radius 10 with a uppercase label under it. Users can do three things. Move a point, create a new point and connect two points with a new line.

  1. Mode 1: Create/Move:* Move a point with their mouse by dragging the point or click on the background to create a new point
  2. Mode 2: Connect Points Allow the user to connect two points by dragging a line of one to another

Canvas: 600px high, width 100% of container, drawing background: aliceblue, control background white

Controls (bottom of canvas): - Three buttons - "Regenerate Random Points" which will use the slider to get the number of points - "Move Points/Connect Points" (Toggle) - "Add Point" - adds a point on a random location - Slider: "Number of Objects" (1-20, default 10)

Behaviors

Create/Move Mode

  • Click anywhere to create a new point
  • Points appear as colored circles (10px diameter, random colors from palette)
  • Each point automatically labeled with consecutive letters (A, B, C, ...)
  • Hover over point to see coordinates

Connect Mode

  • Click two points to create a line through them
  • Line extends across entire canvas with arrows on both ends
  • Line labeled as \(\overleftrightarrow{AB}\) where A and B are the clicked points

Visual Feedback: - Current mode highlighted by drawing a black circle around the point - Instruction text at bottom: "Point Mode: Click background to add points, drag points to move them" (changes with mode)

Line Drawing: - Navy Blue 4px thickness - Lines span the entire drawing region - not just between points

Implementation Notes: I used the Claude Code Skill microsim-p5 after extensive editing of the specification to only focus on the Point and Lines. The Plane editing would be too complex for users.

Building with Basic Objects

Now that we understand points, lines, and planes, we can use them to create more specific geometric objects.

Ray

A ray is like half of a line—it starts at a specific point (called the endpoint) and extends infinitely in one direction.

Notation: Ray \(AB\) is written as \(\overrightarrow{AB}\), where \(A\) is the endpoint and \(B\) is any other point on the ray.

Key characteristics:

  • Starts at a specific endpoint
  • Extends infinitely in one direction only
  • Named by its endpoint first, then another point: \(\overrightarrow{AB}\)

Think of a ray like a laser beam or a flashlight's beam—it starts at a source and continues forever in one direction.

Line Segment

A line segment is the part of a line between two points, called endpoints. Unlike a line or ray, a segment has definite length.

Notation: Segment with endpoints \(A\) and \(B\) is written as \(\overline{AB}\) or segment \(AB\).

Key characteristics:

  • Has two endpoints
  • Has measurable length
  • The shortest path between two points
  • Named by its endpoints: \(\overline{AB}\) or \(\overline{BA}\) (order doesn't matter)

The edge of your desk, the distance between two cities on a map, or the side of a triangle are all examples of line segments.

Midpoint

The midpoint of a line segment is the point that divides the segment into two equal parts. It's exactly halfway between the endpoints.

Key characteristics:

  • Located exactly at the center of a segment
  • Divides the segment into two congruent (equal length) parts
  • Every segment has exactly one midpoint

If point \(M\) is the midpoint of \(\overline{AB}\), then \(AM = MB\) and \(AM + MB = AB\).

Finding the midpoint: If you know the coordinates of the endpoints, you can find the midpoint using the midpoint formula:

For segment \(\overline{AB}\) with endpoints \(A(x_1, y_1)\) and \(B(x_2, y_2)\), the midpoint \(M\) has coordinates:

\[M = \left(\frac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \frac{x_1 + y_2}{2}\right)\]

In other words, average the \(x\)-coordinates and average the \(y\)-coordinates!

Angles and Vertices

Angle

An angle is formed by two rays that share a common endpoint. Angles measure the amount of rotation between the two rays.

Key characteristics:

  • Formed by two rays (called sides of the angle)
  • The rays share a common endpoint (called the vertex)
  • Measured in degrees (°) or radians
  • Named by three points or by the vertex

Angle notation:

  • Three-point notation: \(\angle ABC\) where \(B\) is the vertex
  • Vertex notation: \(\angle B\) (when there's no confusion)
  • Number notation: \(\angle 1\), \(\angle 2\), etc.

Vertex

The vertex of an angle is the common endpoint where the two rays meet. It's the "corner" of the angle and the point of rotation.

Key characteristics:

  • The point where two rays meet
  • The center point of the angle
  • Always named as the middle letter in three-point angle notation

Think of a vertex like the hinge of a door—it's the fixed point around which rotation occurs.

Relationships Between Points and Lines

Collinear Points

Points are collinear if they all lie on the same line. Any two points are always collinear (you can always draw a line through two points), but three or more points may or may not be collinear.

Examples:

  • The centers of three cities along a straight highway are collinear
  • The corners of a triangle are NOT collinear (if they were, you couldn't make a triangle!)
  • Points A, B, and C are collinear if A, B, and C all lie on line \(\overleftrightarrow{AC}\)

Coplanar Points

Points are coplanar if they all lie on the same plane. Any three points are always coplanar (you can always fit a plane through three points), but four or more points may or may not be coplanar.

Examples:

  • The four corners of a rectangular table are coplanar
  • The four corners of a pyramid are NOT all coplanar
  • All points in a 2D drawing are coplanar (they're all on the paper)

Intersection

An intersection is the set of points that two or more figures have in common. When geometric objects cross or overlap, their intersection is where they meet.

Common intersections:

  • Two lines: Intersect at a point (or are parallel/same line)
  • Line and plane: Intersect at a point (or line is in plane/parallel to plane)
  • Two planes: Intersect at a line (or are parallel/same plane)

Examples:

  • Two roads crossing at an intersection point
  • A pencil (line) touching paper (plane) at one point
  • Two walls (planes) meeting at a corner (line)

Special Line Relationships

Parallel Lines

Two lines are parallel if they lie in the same plane and never intersect, no matter how far they're extended. Parallel lines are always the same distance apart.

Notation: Line \(AB\) is parallel to line \(CD\) is written as \(\overleftrightarrow{AB} \parallel \overleftrightarrow{CD}\)

Key characteristics:

  • Lie in the same plane (coplanar)
  • Never intersect
  • Always the same distance apart
  • Have the same slope (in coordinate geometry)

Examples: Railroad tracks, opposite sides of a rectangle, lines of latitude on a globe (approximately)

Perpendicular Lines

Two lines are perpendicular if they intersect at a right angle (90°). The symbol ⊥ means "is perpendicular to."

Notation: Line \(AB\) is perpendicular to line \(CD\) is written as \(\overleftrightarrow{AB} \perp \overleftrightarrow{CD}\)

Key characteristics:

  • Intersect at exactly one point
  • Form four right angles at the intersection
  • Their slopes are negative reciprocals (in coordinate geometry)

Examples: The corner of a room where two walls meet, the hands of a clock at 3:00 or 9:00, the x and y axes on a coordinate plane

Skew Lines

Two lines are skew if they don't lie in the same plane (non-coplanar) and never intersect. Skew lines are not parallel because parallel lines must be coplanar.

Key characteristics:

  • Do NOT lie in the same plane
  • Never intersect
  • Are NOT parallel (parallel requires being coplanar)
  • Only exist in three-dimensional space

Examples: A highway overpass and the road beneath it (going in different directions), opposite edges of a rectangular box that don't share a corner

Mathematical Reasoning: Finding Patterns and Proving Ideas

Geometry isn't just about shapes—it's about thinking logically and making convincing arguments. Mathematicians use two main types of reasoning to explore patterns and prove their discoveries.

Inductive Reasoning

Inductive reasoning is the process of reaching a general conclusion based on observing patterns in specific examples. You start with specific cases and look for a common pattern, then make a generalization.

Steps in inductive reasoning:

  1. Observe specific examples
  2. Look for a pattern
  3. Make a general conclusion (conjecture)

Example:

  • Observation 1: \(2 + 4 = 6\) (even)
  • Observation 2: \(8 + 12 = 20\) (even)
  • Observation 3: \(14 + 26 = 40\) (even)
  • Pattern: When I add two even numbers, I always get an even number
  • Conjecture: The sum of any two even numbers is always even

Strength: Great for discovering patterns and making new conjectures

Limitation: Doesn't guarantee the conclusion is true—you might not have checked all cases!

Deductive Reasoning

Deductive reasoning is the process of using logic to draw conclusions from accepted facts, definitions, and previously proven statements. You start with general principles and apply them to specific situations.

Steps in deductive reasoning:

  1. Start with accepted facts (postulates, definitions, proven theorems)
  2. Apply logical rules
  3. Reach a specific conclusion that must be true

Example:

  • Given fact 1: All rectangles have four right angles
  • Given fact 2: Figure ABCD is a rectangle
  • Logical conclusion: Figure ABCD has four right angles (this MUST be true)

Strength: Guarantees that if your starting facts are true and your logic is correct, your conclusion is definitely true

Use in geometry: Deductive reasoning is used to write mathematical proofs

Conjecture

A conjecture is an unproven statement that you believe to be true based on observations. Conjectures come from inductive reasoning and often become theorems once they're proven using deductive reasoning.

Famous conjectures:

  • Goldbach's Conjecture: Every even number greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two prime numbers (unproven for over 250 years!)
  • Four Color Conjecture: Any map can be colored with just four colors so that neighboring regions have different colors (proven in 1976, now a theorem)

Counterexample

A counterexample is a specific example that shows a conjecture is false. Finding just one counterexample is enough to disprove a conjecture—no matter how many examples supported it!

Example:

  • Conjecture: All prime numbers are odd
  • Counterexample: 2 is prime and 2 is even
  • Conclusion: The conjecture is FALSE (disproven by one counterexample)

Power of counterexamples: You can test thousands of cases and a conjecture seems true, but one counterexample proves it's false!
