For every conditional statement, we can create three related statements by rearranging or negating its parts. These related statements have special names and important logical properties.

Given a conditional statement: If p, then q (p → q)

We can form:

The Power of the Contrapositive in Proofs

Understanding the contrapositive is incredibly useful in geometry proofs. Sometimes proving the contrapositive is easier than proving the original statement directly. Since they're logically equivalent, proving one automatically proves the other!

Example: Prove that if \(n^2\) is even, then \(n\) is even.

This can be challenging to prove directly. But the contrapositive is much easier:

Contrapositive: If \(n\) is odd, then \(n^2\) is odd.

We can easily prove this: If \(n\) is odd, we can write \(n = 2k + 1\) for some integer \(k\). Then:

\(n^2 = (2k + 1)^2 = 4k^2 + 4k + 1 = 2(2k^2 + 2k) + 1\)

This has the form "2 times something plus 1," which is the definition of an odd number. Therefore \(n^2\) is odd, proving the contrapositive—and thus proving the original statement!
