An inscribed angle is an angle formed by two chords that share an endpoint on the circle. The vertex of an inscribed angle lies on the circle itself, not at the center.

Arc Length and Sectors

Arc length is the distance along the curved edge of the circle between two points. Arc length is proportional to the central angle: if the angle is larger, the arc is longer.

A segment of a circle is the region between a chord and the arc it cuts off. Unlike a sector (which includes two radii), a segment has a chord as one of its boundaries. To find the area of a segment, you subtract the area of the triangle formed by the chord and the two radii from the area of the sector.

Tangent and Secant Segment Relationships

When two secants, two tangents, or a secant and a tangent are drawn from the same external point, the lengths of their segments have special relationships.

Inscribed and Circumscribed Polygons

Polygons and circles have special relationships when one is drawn inside or around the other.

An inscribed polygon is a polygon whose vertices all lie on a circle. The circle is said to be circumscribed about the polygon. Every triangle has a circumscribed circle (called the circumcircle), and its center is equidistant from all three vertices.

A circumscribed polygon is a polygon whose sides are all tangent to a circle. The circle is said to be inscribed in the polygon. Not all polygons have inscribed circles, but regular polygons (with all sides and angles equal) always do.
