Bisect Segment Steps

Run Fullscreen

About This Diagram

This reference diagram shows the complete construction of a segment bisector in four panels. The construction creates both a midpoint and a perpendicular bisector.

The Four Panels

Panel Step Action
1 Given Segment AB to bisect
2 Steps 1-2 Draw arcs from A and B (radius > ½AB)
3 Step 3 Mark intersection points P and Q
4 Result Draw line PQ - the perpendicular bisector

Key Properties

  • Midpoint M: The intersection of PQ and AB
  • AM ≅ MB: The segment is divided equally
  • PQ ⊥ AB: The bisector is perpendicular (90°)
  • Equidistant Property: Every point on PQ is equidistant from A and B

How to Use

  1. Hover over each panel to highlight and examine
  2. Notice the arcs must have radius greater than half of AB
  3. The result shows both the midpoint and perpendicular relationship

Learning Objectives

  • Construct a segment bisector using compass and straightedge
  • Understand why the construction creates a perpendicular bisector
  • Identify the midpoint and its properties
