Bisect Segment Steps
About This Diagram
This reference diagram shows the complete construction of a segment bisector in four panels. The construction creates both a midpoint and a perpendicular bisector.
The Four Panels
| Panel | Step | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Given | Segment AB to bisect |
| 2 | Steps 1-2 | Draw arcs from A and B (radius > ½AB) |
| 3 | Step 3 | Mark intersection points P and Q |
| 4 | Result | Draw line PQ - the perpendicular bisector |
Key Properties
- Midpoint M: The intersection of PQ and AB
- AM ≅ MB: The segment is divided equally
- PQ ⊥ AB: The bisector is perpendicular (90°)
- Equidistant Property: Every point on PQ is equidistant from A and B
How to Use
- Hover over each panel to highlight and examine
- Notice the arcs must have radius greater than half of AB
- The result shows both the midpoint and perpendicular relationship
Learning Objectives
- Construct a segment bisector using compass and straightedge
- Understand why the construction creates a perpendicular bisector
- Identify the midpoint and its properties
Bloom's Taxonomy Level
Applying and Analyzing - Construction technique application.
