About This MicroSim

This interactive quiz asks learners to classify real-world interactive infographic descriptions across all five dimensions of the taxonomy simultaneously:

Dimension Options
Purpose Educational, Analytical, Persuasive, Promotional
Format Linear, Hierarchical, Comparative, Circular, Radial
Complexity Minimalist, Detailed
Audience General Public, Professional, Stakeholder
Domain Science, Business, Technology, Education, Health, History

Each scenario presents a 3-4 sentence description. The learner selects one value per dimension, then clicks "Check Answer" to see per-dimension feedback. Incorrect dimensions show an explanation of the correct choice.

This is an Apply-level activity (Bloom's L3): learners must use the taxonomy on novel examples rather than simply recalling definitions.

How to Use

  1. Read the scenario description carefully
  2. Select one option in each of the five dimension rows
  3. Click "Check Answer" once all five dimensions have a selection
  4. Review the feedback — correct dimensions show green, incorrect show red with an explanation
  5. Click "Next Scenario" to advance (or "See Results" on the last scenario)
  6. Work through all 6 scenarios to build classification fluency

Lesson Plan

Grade Level

Undergraduate / Professional Development

Duration

15-20 minutes

Prerequisites

Familiarity with the five-dimension interactive infographic taxonomy from Chapter 2, including the Purpose Classification Sorter and Structural Format Gallery MicroSims.

Activities

  1. Review (3 min): Students quickly review the five taxonomy dimensions and their possible values using the taxonomy tree MicroSim.
  2. Classification Practice (10 min): Students work through all 6 scenarios, aiming for 5/5 dimensions correct on each. They note which dimensions they find hardest to classify.
  3. Discussion (5 min): The class discusses which dimensions are most ambiguous and why. For example, does a museum touchscreen target "General Public" or "Educational" audience? How do you decide between "Comparative" and "Linear" format?

Assessment

Students can correctly classify at least 4 of 6 scenarios with all five dimensions correct, and can articulate the reasoning behind their choices for the most ambiguous dimensions.
