Extraneous Load

Extraneous Load are any screen elements that don't contribute to learning. Extra grid lines on a plot that does not need them is an example of extraneous load that can be removed. When we design MicroSims our goal is to eliminate unnecessary information and confusing layouts. We should not add information to a screen that does not help understanding our understanding the core concepts.

Germane Load

Germane Load is the mental effort that contributes to learning. Some concepts can be quickly understood, especially if they are a small variation of an existing concept. Other concepts are unlike any the student has seen before. They require a great deal of time and effort to understand. Support schema formation through meaningful practice and connections

Progressive Disclosure

Progressive disclosure is the process of hiding some information at the start of a MicroSim. After the user gets oriented then an additional control can show the new complexity. Reveal information incrementally rather than overwhelming learners with too many graphical elements when a MicroSim starts.

Active learning engages students in the learning process through activities that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. In intelligent textbooks, this includes:
