Replication means keeping multiple copies of the same data on different machines. In distributed graph databases, replication serves two purposes: improving read performance (queries can be served from the nearest replica) and providing fault tolerance (if one machine dies, the data still exists elsewhere).
The fundamental replication decision is how many copies to maintain. The replication factor (RF) determines this:
