Introduction to Momentum

What is Linear Momentum?

Linear momentum (often just called "momentum") measures the quantity of motion an object possesses. An object's momentum depends on both its mass and its velocity:

  • $\vec{p}$ is momentum (measured in kg·m/s)
  • $m$ is mass (measured in kg)
  • $\vec{v}$ is velocity (measured in m/s)

Notice that momentum is a vector quantity—it has both magnitude and direction. The direction of momentum is always the same as the direction of velocity.

Understanding Momentum Magnitude

Let's compare the momentum of different objects to build intuition:

Notice how both mass and velocity contribute to momentum. A massive freight train moving slowly has enormous momentum, while a light baseball moving quickly has relatively little momentum.

Momentum as a Vector

Because momentum is a vector, we must consider its direction. An object moving east has positive momentum in the east direction. If it turns around and moves west, its momentum becomes negative (or positive in the west direction). When analyzing collisions, tracking the direction of momentum is crucial.

Impulse: Force Over Time

While momentum describes an object's motion, impulse describes how forces change that motion. Impulse is the product of force and the time interval over which the force acts:

Impulse Equation:

Why Impulse Matters

Consider two scenarios where a car stops:

  2. Braking gradually: The car stops in 5 seconds

In both cases, the change in momentum is identical (the car goes from some velocity to zero). However, the forces involved are vastly different because of the time factor. This is where impulse becomes critical for safety engineering.

The Impulse-Momentum Theorem

The impulse-momentum theorem connects impulse directly to the change in momentum:

Conservation of Momentum

One of the most powerful principles in physics is the law of conservation of momentum. This law states:

In an isolated system with no external forces, total momentum remains constant.

Mathematically, for a system of objects:

$$\vec{p}{total,i} = \vec{p}$$

Or, for a two-object system:

$$m_1\vec{v}{1i} + m_2\vec{v}} = m_1\vec{v{1f} + m_2\vec{v}$$

Where subscripts $i$ and $f$ denote initial and final values.

Why Momentum is Conserved

Newton's third law provides the foundation for momentum conservation. When two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other. These forces act for the same time interval, creating equal and opposite impulses. Therefore, any momentum gained by one object is exactly balanced by momentum lost by the other—the total remains constant.

Identifying Isolated Systems

A system is isolated when:

  • No external forces act on the system, or
  • External forces sum to zero, or
  • External forces are negligible compared to internal forces
  • The time interval is short enough that external forces don't significantly affect momentum

Examples of approximately isolated systems:

  • Two billiard balls colliding (ignoring friction during the brief collision)
  • A rocket and expelled gases in space (no external forces)
  • An ice skater throwing a ball while on frictionless ice
  • Two rail cars coupling together

Types of Collisions

Collisions are classified based on whether kinetic energy is conserved. While momentum is always conserved in isolated systems, kinetic energy may or may not be conserved.

Elastic Collisions

In an elastic collision, both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved. These collisions involve no permanent deformation and no conversion of kinetic energy to other forms like heat or sound (in the ideal case).

Elastic Collision Equations

For a one-dimensional elastic collision between two objects, we have two conservation equations:

Conservation of Momentum: $$m_1v_{1i} + m_2v_{2i} = m_1v_{1f} + m_2v_{2f}$$

Special Cases of Elastic Collisions

Several special cases produce particularly interesting results:

  1. Equal masses ($m_1 = m_2$): The objects exchange velocities. If object 2 is initially at rest, object 1 stops and object 2 moves with object 1's initial velocity.

  2. Massive target ($m_2 >> m_1$, object 2 at rest): The light object bounces back with approximately its original speed (reversed), while the massive object barely moves. (Example: tennis ball hitting a wall)

  3. Massive projectile ($m_1 >> m_2$, object 2 at rest): The heavy object continues with nearly unchanged velocity, while the light object shoots forward at approximately twice the heavy object's velocity. (Example: bowling ball hitting a ping-pong ball)

Real-World Elastic Collisions

Perfectly elastic collisions are rare in everyday life, but several scenarios come close:

Inelastic and Perfectly Inelastic Collisions

Most real-world collisions are inelastic, meaning kinetic energy is not conserved. Some kinetic energy converts to other forms like:

  • Heat (friction, internal vibrations)
  • Sound (the "crash" sound)
  • Permanent deformation (crumpling, denting)
  • Internal energy (molecular motion)

However, momentum is still conserved in inelastic collisions, making it our primary tool for analysis.

Perfectly Inelastic Collisions

A perfectly inelastic collision occurs when objects stick together after colliding, moving as a single combined mass. This represents the maximum possible loss of kinetic energy consistent with momentum conservation.

Conservation of Momentum (perfectly inelastic): $$m_1v_{1i} + m_2v_{2i} = (m_1 + m_2)v_f$$

Notice there's only one final velocity because the objects move together.

Example: Car Collision

Two cars collide at an intersection and stick together:

  • Car 1: Mass = 1,200 kg, moving east at 20 m/s
  • Car 2: Mass = 1,500 kg, moving north at 15 m/s

Finding their combined velocity after collision requires vector momentum conservation (which we'll explore in the 2D collisions section).

Calculating Energy Loss

Even though kinetic energy isn't conserved in inelastic collisions, we can calculate how much is lost:

For perfectly inelastic collisions, the fraction of kinetic energy lost depends on the mass ratio and can be substantial—often 50% or more.

Two-Dimensional Collisions

Real-world collisions often occur in two dimensions, such as billiard balls on a pool table or cars at an intersection. Analyzing these requires treating momentum as a vector with components.

Vector Momentum Conservation

For 2D collisions, momentum is conserved independently in each direction:

X-direction: $$m_1v_{1ix} + m_2v_{2ix} = m_1v_{1fx} + m_2v_{2fx}$$

Y-direction: $$m_1v_{1iy} + m_2v_{2iy} = m_1v_{1fy} + m_2v_{2fy}$$

Solving 2D Collision Problems

The strategy for 2D collision problems:

  1. Set up a coordinate system with x and y axes
  2. Resolve all velocities into x and y components using trigonometry
  3. Apply conservation of momentum separately to x and y directions
  4. Solve the system of equations for unknown velocities or angles
  5. Convert component form back to magnitude and direction using:
  6. Magnitude: $v = \sqrt{v_x^2 + v_y^2}$
  7. Direction: $\theta = \tan^{-1}(v_y/v_x)$

Glancing Collisions

When objects don't collide head-on, they undergo glancing collisions and scatter at angles. For elastic glancing collisions in 2D:

  • Momentum is conserved in both x and y directions
  • Kinetic energy is conserved
  • We have four unknowns (two final velocity components for each object)
  • We need additional information, such as one scattering angle, to solve completely

Example: Billiard Ball Collision

A cue ball (mass m) moving at 5 m/s strikes a stationary eight ball (mass m) at an angle. After collision:

  • Cue ball deflects 30° to the right of its original path
  • Eight ball moves at some angle to the left

Using conservation of momentum in x and y, along with energy conservation, we can determine both final speeds and the eight ball's angle.

Center of Mass

The center of mass is the point where all the mass of a system can be considered to be concentrated for analyzing translational motion. Understanding center of mass helps us analyze the motion of complex systems, from simple two-particle systems to extended rigid bodies.

Calculating Center of Mass

For a system of particles, the center of mass position is:

One dimension: $$x_{cm} = \frac{m_1x_1 + m_2x_2 + ... + m_nx_n}{m_1 + m_2 + ... + m_n} = \frac{\sum m_ix_i}{\sum m_i}$$

Two dimensions: $$x_{cm} = \frac{\sum m_ix_i}{M_{total}}, \quad y_{cm} = \frac{\sum m_iy_i}{M_{total}}$$

Where $M_{total}$ is the total mass of the system.

Motion of the Center of Mass

The center of mass has a special property: it moves as if all external forces act on a single particle located at that point with mass equal to the total system mass.

Center of mass velocity: $$\vec{v}{cm} = \frac{\sum m_i\vec{v}_i}{M$$}

This means the total momentum of a system equals the total mass times the center of mass velocity:

$$\vec{p}{total} = M$$}\vec{v}_{cm

Center of Mass in Collisions

In an isolated system (no external forces), the center of mass velocity remains constant, even during collisions. The individual objects may bounce, stick together, or explode apart, but the center of mass continues moving with unchanged velocity.

This principle is powerful because:

  • It simplifies complex collision analysis
  • It allows us to choose reference frames where the center of mass is at rest
  • It connects momentum conservation to the motion of a single point

Example: Exploding Firework

A firework shell explodes into multiple fragments at the top of its trajectory. Even though the fragments fly in all directions, the center of mass continues on the same parabolic path the shell was following before explosion. Gravity is the only external force, so the center of mass motion follows projectile motion principles.

Rocket Propulsion

Rocket propulsion demonstrates momentum conservation in its most dramatic form. How can a rocket accelerate in space where there's nothing to push against? The answer lies in Newton's third law and conservation of momentum.

The Rocket Principle

A rocket works by expelling mass (exhaust gases) in one direction, causing the rocket to accelerate in the opposite direction. This is a continuous perfectly inelastic collision in reverse—the rocket and fuel start as one system, then separate.

Momentum conservation for rockets:

Initially, the rocket (mass $M$) and fuel are at rest: $p_i = 0$

After burning fuel:

  • Rocket (mass $M - \Delta m$) moves forward with velocity $v$
  • Expelled gases (mass $\Delta m$) move backward with velocity $v_e$ (relative to ground)

Conservation of momentum: $$0 = (M - \Delta m)v - \Delta m \cdot v_e$$

This explains why rockets work in space—they don't push on anything external; they push on their own exhaust.

Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation

For a rocket that continuously burns fuel, the relationship between velocity change and fuel consumption is:

$$\Delta v = v_e \ln\left(\frac{M_i}{M_f}\right)$$

Where:

  • $\Delta v$ is the change in rocket velocity
  • $v_e$ is the exhaust velocity relative to the rocket
  • $M_i$ is the initial total mass (rocket + fuel)
  • $M_f$ is the final mass (rocket only, after fuel burned)
  • $\ln$ is the natural logarithm

This equation reveals several important insights:

  • Exhaust velocity is crucial—doubling $v_e$ doubles $\Delta v$
