Luminous Intensity
Luminous intensity measures how bright a light source appears to the human eye in a particular direction. It's measured in candelas (cd), one of the seven SI base units. Specular vs. Diffuse Reflection
Reflection occurs on all surfaces, but the type of reflection depends on surface smoothness:

Refraction of Light
Snell's Law and Index of Refraction
Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one transparent medium to another. This bending occurs because light travels at different speeds in different materials. The index of refraction (n) of a material describes how much light slows down in that material compared to vacuum:
n = c/v
where c is the speed of light in vacuum and v is the speed in the material.
Common indices of refraction:

Total Internal Reflection and Critical Angle
When light travels from a denser medium to a less dense medium (e.g., water to air), something remarkable can occur. At small angles of incidence, light refracts normally. However, as the incident angle increases, the refracted angle increases even more. Eventually, the refracted ray would need to bend 90° from the normal—meaning it would travel along the boundary. The incident angle at which this occurs is called the critical angle (θc).
At angles greater than the critical angle, refraction cannot occur. Instead, all the light reflects back into the denser medium—a phenomenon called total internal reflection.
The critical angle is calculated from Snell's Law by setting θ₂ = 90°:
sin θc = n₂/n₁ (where n₁ > n₂)
For water-to-air: sin θc = 1.00/1.33, so θc ≈ 48.8° For glass-to-air: sin θc = 1.00/1.50, so θc ≈ 41.8° For diamond-to-air: sin θc = 1.00/2.42, so θc ≈ 24.4°
Applications of total internal reflection:
