The Metric Scale Zoom MicroSim is an interactive educational tool designed to help students understand the vast range of metric prefixes and develop intuition for orders of magnitude in the metric system. Students can explore objects ranging from viruses (nanometer scale) to galaxies (exameter scale), visualizing the logarithmic nature of metric measurements.

Lesson Plan
Introduction (5 minutes)
Begin by asking students to estimate the size of common objects in meters. For example: - How wide is a human hair in meters? - How tall is this classroom in meters? - How far is it across your state in meters?
Most students will struggle with very small or very large numbers, setting the stage for why metric prefixes are useful.
Guided Exploration (10 minutes)
Have students work in pairs to explore the MicroSim:
- Starting Point: Begin at the "Person Height" level (the base meter unit)
- Zoom Out: Move the slider to larger scales
- What happens to the numbers?
- How many powers of 10 separate each level?
- Zoom In: Move the slider to smaller scales
- At what point do everyday measurements become difficult to visualize?
- Why do we need special units like micrometers and nanometers?
