Glossary Quality Report¶
This report assesses the quality of the glossary definitions based on ISO 11179 metadata registry standards.
Summary Metrics¶
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Terms Defined | 104 |
| Total Concepts in Learning Graph | 195 |
| Coverage Rate | 53% (excludes individual letters and sight words) |
| Terms with Examples | 104 (100%) |
| Circular Definitions | 0 |
| Alphabetically Ordered | 100% |
Concept Coverage Analysis¶
The glossary covers all conceptual terms from the learning graph. The following categories were intentionally excluded:
- Individual Uppercase Letters (26): Uppercase A through Uppercase Z are letter recognition concepts, not terms requiring definitions
- Individual Lowercase Letters (26): Lowercase a through lowercase z are letter recognition concepts
- Individual Sight Words (18): Specific sight words ("the", "a", "is", etc.) are vocabulary items, not terms requiring definitions
- Individual Letter Sounds (21): Sound of B, Sound of C, etc. are covered by general "Consonant Sound" definition
Actual conceptual terms defined: 104 of 104 (100%)
ISO 11179 Compliance Scoring¶
Each definition was evaluated against four criteria (25 points each):
Precision (25 points)¶
Definitions accurately capture the concept's meaning within the kindergarten reading instruction context.
- All definitions specify the concept in the course context
- Terminology appropriate for teachers and parents helping kindergartners
- Definitions match how concepts are used in the curriculum
Score: 24/25 (Minor variations in specificity for some phonemic awareness terms)
Conciseness (25 points)¶
Target: 20-50 words per definition
- Average definition length: 28 words
- Definitions under 50 words: 104 (100%)
- Definitions under 20 words: 12 (12%)
Score: 25/25
Distinctiveness (25 points)¶
Each definition is unique and distinguishable.
- No two definitions share identical wording
- Similar concepts (e.g., Short A Sound vs Short E Sound) use consistent structure with unique identifying content
- All cross-referenced terms are defined in the glossary
Score: 24/25 (Vowel sound definitions follow a template structure)
Non-circularity (25 points)¶
Definitions avoid circular dependencies.
- Zero definitions reference undefined terms
- No circular chains (A depends on B, B depends on A)
- Definitions use fundamental, commonly understood terms
Score: 25/25
Overall Quality Score¶
| Criterion | Score |
|---|---|
| Precision | 24/25 |
| Conciseness | 25/25 |
| Distinctiveness | 24/25 |
| Non-circularity | 25/25 |
| Total | 98/100 |
Example Coverage¶
All 104 terms include relevant examples:
- Examples are concrete and course-relevant
- Examples use words and scenarios appropriate for kindergarten context
- Examples clarify concepts without adding confusion
Example Coverage: 100%
Readability Assessment¶
- Target Audience: Teachers and parents helping kindergarten students
- Reading Level: Appropriate for adult readers (not intended for kindergartners to read themselves)
- Clarity: Definitions use clear, direct language
- Consistency: Consistent formatting throughout
Recommendations¶
Strengths¶
- Complete coverage of all conceptual terms
- 100% example coverage enhances understanding
- Alphabetical ordering facilitates quick reference
- No circular definitions ensures clarity
- Consistent formatting improves usability
Minor Improvements (Optional)¶
- Consider adding cross-references between related terms (e.g., "See also: Phonemic Awareness" for phoneme-related entries)
- Vowel sound entries could include audio pronunciation guides in future MicroSims
Validation Results¶
| Check | Status |
