What Is Knowledge?

At the heart of every discipline, every argument, and every discovery lies a deceptively simple concept: knowledge. We use the word constantly, yet pinning down exactly what it means turns out to be one of philosophy's greatest challenges.

Consider these three statements:

  • "I know that water boils at 100°C at sea level."
  • "I know how to ride a bicycle."
  • "I know the feeling of standing at the edge of a cliff."

Each uses the word "know," yet each describes something quite different. The first is a factual claim about the world. The second is a practical skill. The third is a personal experience. All three are forms of knowledge, but they work in very different ways. In later chapters, we will explore these distinct types in detail — for now, notice that knowledge is not one simple thing, but a family of related ideas.

At its most basic, knowledge can be understood as an awareness or understanding of facts, truths, or principles gained through experience, reasoning, or inquiry. It is what allows human beings — and perhaps other creatures — to navigate the world, make predictions, and build on what came before.

Belief: The Starting Point

Before we can have knowledge, we need something more basic: belief. A belief is a mental state in which a person holds something to be true. You believe that your school exists. You believe that gravity pulls objects toward the Earth. You believe that your friend is trustworthy.

But here is the crucial point: not all beliefs are knowledge. People believe things that turn out to be false all the time. For centuries, most people believed the Earth was at the center of the universe. That belief was sincere, widely shared, and confidently held — but it was wrong.

This leads to a fundamental question in epistemology (the study of knowledge): what does a belief need in order to count as knowledge?

As the table shows, knowledge requires more than belief. It requires that the belief be true and that it be supported by good reasons. This brings us to our next two concepts.

Truth: The Reality Requirement

Truth is the quality of a statement or belief that corresponds to the way things actually are. If you believe it is raining outside, and it really is raining, your belief is true. If you believe it is raining but the sky is clear, your belief is false — no matter how sincerely you hold it.

Truth matters to knowledge because you cannot truly know something that is false. You might think you know it, you might feel certain about it, but if it turns out to be wrong, philosophers would say you never really knew it — you only believed it.

This is not just an abstract point. In everyday life, the distinction between "I know" and "I believe" carries real weight. When a doctor says "I know this medication will help," patients expect something stronger than a guess. When a historian says "I know the document is authentic," they are claiming it matches reality.

Justification: Why Do You Think That?

Suppose you believe it will rain tomorrow, and it does rain. Does that mean you knew it would rain? Not necessarily. If your belief was based on a coin flip, you just got lucky. Justification is the element that separates lucky guesses from genuine knowledge.

Justification means having good reasons, evidence, or grounds for your belief. A meteorologist who predicts rain based on satellite data, atmospheric pressure readings, and historical weather patterns has justified her belief. A person who predicts rain because "I just have a feeling" has not.

The classical definition of knowledge, first articulated by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, brings these three elements together:

For something to count as knowledge, it must be:

  1. Believed — you actually hold it to be true
  2. True — it corresponds to reality
  3. Justified — you have good reasons for believing it

This formula has been debated and refined for over two thousand years. In Chapter 2, you will encounter the famous Gettier Problem, which shows that even justified true beliefs can sometimes fail to qualify as knowledge. But for now, the JTB framework gives us a solid foundation to build on.

Perspective: The Lens Through Which We See

Every knower sees the world through a particular perspective — a point of view shaped by their experiences, culture, education, language, and social position. Perspective is not a flaw or a limitation to be overcome; it is an inescapable feature of being a knower. No one can step outside their own perspective entirely and view the world from a "God's eye view."

Consider how two people might describe the same historical event. A British historian writing about colonialism and an Indigenous scholar writing about the same period may emphasize different facts, interpret events differently, and reach very different conclusions — not because one is wrong and the other right, but because they bring different perspectives to the evidence.

This does not mean that all perspectives are equally valid or that truth is just "a matter of opinion." It means that acknowledging perspective is essential to thinking carefully about knowledge. When you encounter a knowledge claim, one of the most powerful questions you can ask is: Whose perspective is this, and what might they be missing?

Personal Knowledge and Shared Knowledge

Personal knowledge is what an individual knows through their own direct experience, reflection, and practice. Your ability to play a musical instrument, your memory of a childhood event, and your intuitive understanding of how a friend is feeling — these are all forms of personal knowledge. They are unique to you and shaped by your particular life.

Shared Knowledge, by contrast, is the accumulated body of knowledge that belongs to a group or community. The periodic table of elements, the rules of mathematics, the legal system of a country — these are all forms of shared knowledge. They exist independently of any single person and are passed from generation to generation through language, institutions, education, and cultural practices.

The relationship between personal and shared knowledge is dynamic and two-directional:

  • Shared knowledge shapes personal knowledge: You learn chemistry from textbooks (shared knowledge) and develop your own understanding (personal knowledge).
  • Personal knowledge contributes to shared knowledge: A scientist's individual insight or discovery can, once published and verified, become part of the shared body of scientific knowledge.

Certainty and Its Limits

How confident can we be in what we know? Certainty is the state of being completely sure that something is true — having no doubt whatsoever. Mathematical proofs and logical truths (like "all bachelors are unmarried") can achieve a high degree of certainty because they follow necessarily from their definitions and axioms.

But most of our knowledge does not enjoy this kind of certainty. Scientific theories are well-supported by evidence but could, in principle, be overturned by new discoveries. Historical accounts depend on surviving evidence that may be incomplete. Even our everyday beliefs — "my car is parked where I left it" — carry a tiny margin of doubt.

This is not a reason for despair. Recognizing that certainty comes in degrees is one of the hallmarks of mature thinking. Rather than asking "Am I certain?" a more useful question is often "How confident should I be, given the available evidence?"

The following list summarizes the spectrum of certainty across different domains:

  • Logical and mathematical truths: Highest certainty (deductive proof)
  • Well-established scientific theories: Very high confidence (extensive empirical support)
  • Historical claims based on multiple sources: High confidence (corroborated evidence)
  • Personal testimony from a trusted source: Moderate confidence (depends on credibility)
  • A single anecdotal report: Low confidence (limited evidence)
  • An unsupported assertion: Very low confidence (no justification)

Objectivity and Subjectivity

Two concepts that come up repeatedly in discussions about knowledge are objectivity and subjectivity. Understanding the distinction between them — and the tensions between them — is essential for navigating every area of knowledge you will study in this course.

Objectivity is the quality of being based on observable, measurable facts that are independent of any individual's personal feelings or opinions. An objective claim is one that can, in principle, be verified independently of any particular person's feelings, opinions, or perspective. "Water freezes at 0°C at standard atmospheric pressure" is an objective claim — anyone can test it, and the result does not depend on who is doing the testing.

Subjectivity is the quality of being based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions. A subjective claim depends on the individual's personal experience, feelings, or interpretation. "This painting is beautiful" is a subjective claim — it reflects the viewer's aesthetic response, which may differ from person to person.

In your TOK essay and exhibition, showing that you can identify these layers in a knowledge claim will strengthen your analysis considerably.

Bias: The Invisible Filter

Bias is a tendency to think or interpret information in a way that is systematically skewed in a particular direction. Biases can be conscious (you know you have them) or unconscious (they operate below your awareness). They can be personal (shaped by your individual experiences) or cultural (shared by a whole community or society).

Bias is not the same as having a perspective. Perspective is inevitable and, when acknowledged, can enrich understanding. Bias, by contrast, distorts understanding by causing you to favor some information over other information without good reason.

Some common ways bias operates:

  • Selective attention: Noticing evidence that supports what you already believe and overlooking evidence that contradicts it
  • Framing: The way a question or issue is presented can influence the conclusion people reach
  • Cultural assumptions: Treating the norms of your own culture as universal or self-evidently correct
  • Emotional influence: Letting feelings of fear, hope, or loyalty override careful reasoning

Recognizing bias — in yourself and in others — is one of the most important skills you will develop in this course. In Chapter 5, we will explore specific cognitive biases in detail. For now, the key insight is that bias is everywhere, it is often invisible to the person who holds it, and the first step in dealing with it is honest self-examination.

Critical Thinking: The Engine of Inquiry

Critical thinking is the disciplined process of actively and skillfully analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information to reach well-reasoned conclusions. It is not the same as being "critical" in the everyday sense of finding fault — rather, it means thinking carefully, asking good questions, and refusing to accept claims without examining them.

Critical thinking involves several interconnected skills:

  • Questioning assumptions: What am I taking for granted? Is this assumption warranted?
  • Evaluating evidence: Is the evidence reliable? Is it sufficient? Could it be interpreted differently?
  • Recognizing bias: Am I being influenced by my own biases or by the biases of my sources?
  • Considering alternatives: Are there other explanations or perspectives I haven't considered?
  • Drawing reasoned conclusions: Does my conclusion follow logically from the evidence and reasoning?

Critical thinking is not a topic confined to one chapter — it is a thread that runs through every chapter of this textbook and every area of knowledge. It is the foundational skill that makes all the other concepts in this course meaningful.

Ways of Knowing

How do we actually come to know things? The IB TOK framework identifies several ways of knowing — the methods, faculties, and processes through which human beings acquire knowledge. These include:

  • Reason: Drawing conclusions through logical thinking and argumentation
  • Sense perception: Gaining knowledge through sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell
  • Emotion: Understanding that is shaped or informed by feelings
  • Language: Acquiring and communicating knowledge through words, symbols, and grammar
  • Intuition: Immediate understanding without conscious reasoning
  • Imagination: Creating mental images, scenarios, and possibilities
  • Memory: Drawing on stored experiences and information
  • Faith: Accepting something as true without empirical proof

Each way of knowing has strengths and limitations. Reason can be rigorous but may be based on flawed premises. Sense perception gives us direct experience of the world but can be deceived by illusions. Emotion provides powerful insight into values and relationships but can cloud judgment.
