What Is Reasoning?
In earlier chapters, you learned that knowledge requires justification — good reasons for believing something to be true. But what counts as a "good reason"? How do we move from evidence to conclusions in a way that is reliable and defensible? The answer lies in reasoning: the cognitive process of drawing conclusions from available information, evidence, or premises through logical thinking. Reasoning is how we connect what we already know to what we are trying to figure out.
Reasoning operates everywhere in human life. A scientist reasons from experimental data to a hypothesis. A juror reasons from testimony and evidence to a verdict. A student reasons from what a text says to what it means. But not all reasoning is equally good. Some reasoning is rigorous and careful; some is sloppy, biased, or deceptive. The purpose of this chapter is to help you tell the difference.
Closely related to reasoning is argumentation — the structured process of presenting claims supported by reasons and evidence in order to persuade others or arrive at well-justified conclusions. While reasoning can happen privately inside your own mind, argumentation is reasoning made public. When you write a TOK essay, participate in a class debate, or challenge a knowledge claim, you are engaging in argumentation.
The Anatomy of an Argument
Every argument — in the logical sense, not the shouting-match sense — is built from the same basic components. Understanding these components is the first step toward evaluating any knowledge claim you encounter.
Premises are the statements offered as reasons or evidence in support of a conclusion. They are the starting points of an argument — the claims you begin with. Conclusions are the statements that the premises are intended to support. The conclusion is what the argument is trying to establish.
Consider this simple example:
- Premise 1: All mammals are warm-blooded.
- Premise 2: Dolphins are mammals.
- Conclusion: Therefore, dolphins are warm-blooded.
The premises provide the foundation, and the conclusion follows from them. Notice the word "therefore" — it signals the transition from premises to conclusion. Reasoning and Persuasion
Before we go deeper into the types of reasoning, it is important to distinguish reasoning from persuasion. Persuasion is the act of convincing someone to accept a belief or take an action. While good reasoning can be persuasive, not all persuasion involves good reasoning. Advertisements, political speeches, and emotional appeals can be highly persuasive without containing any valid logical argument at all.
The difference matters because in TOK, we are interested not just in what people believe but in whether they are justified in believing it. A persuasive argument that relies on fear, flattery, or manipulation may change minds, but it does not produce knowledge. A logically sound argument, even if it is less emotionally gripping, provides genuine justification.
This distinction will become even more important when we examine logical fallacies later in this chapter. Many fallacies are persuasive precisely because they exploit psychological shortcuts rather than logical reasoning.
Deductive Reasoning
Deductive reasoning is a form of reasoning in which the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. If the premises are true, the conclusion must be true — there is no possibility of the conclusion being false while the premises are true. Deductive reasoning moves from general principles to specific instances.

However, deductive reasoning has an important limitation. It can only guarantee the conclusion if the premises are actually true. If Premise 1 is false — if, say, the streets are covered and do not get wet when it rains — then the conclusion does not hold. This is why we need to distinguish between validity and soundness.
Valid Arguments and Sound Arguments
A valid argument is one in which the conclusion follows logically from the premises — that is, if the premises were true, the conclusion would have to be true. Validity is about the structure of the argument, not about whether the premises are actually true.
Consider this argument:

Notice something important: validity and truth are different things entirely. An argument can be perfectly valid yet have a false conclusion (if a premise is false). Inductive Reasoning
While deductive reasoning moves from general principles to specific conclusions, inductive reasoning moves in the opposite direction — from specific observations to general conclusions. Inductive reasoning does not guarantee its conclusions, but it can provide strong support for them.
Here is an example:

This conclusion is extremely well-supported, but it is not guaranteed in the way a deductive conclusion is. In principle, something could prevent the sun from rising (perhaps an asteroid destroys the Earth overnight). Inductive reasoning gives us probability, not certainty.
Because inductive arguments do not guarantee their conclusions, we evaluate them differently from deductive arguments. Instead of asking whether they are valid or sound, we ask whether the induction is strong or weak.
Strong induction occurs when the premises, if true, make the conclusion very probable. The sunrise example above is a case of strong induction — the evidence is overwhelming. Weak induction occurs when the premises provide only limited support for the conclusion.

The second statement distorts the original claim, making it much easier to reject. When you encounter a straw man, the key question to ask is: Is this an accurate representation of what was actually argued?

Job creation may be important, but it does not address the question of whether the factory is polluting. The topic has been shifted to avoid the original concern.
Fallacies That Limit Options
The false dilemma (also called a false dichotomy) presents only two options when, in reality, more possibilities exist.
- Example: "Either you support this policy completely, or you don't care about public safety."
This framing ignores the possibility that someone might care deeply about public safety while having legitimate concerns about the specific policy. Most complex issues involve a spectrum of positions, not just two extremes.
