The Information Ecosystem
Before we can understand what goes wrong with information, we need to understand the system through which information flows. Gatekeepers — editors, librarians, professors — filtered what reached the public. Today, that ecosystem has been radically transformed. Anyone with a smartphone can publish to a global audience in seconds. Algorithms, not human editors, determine what most people see. The volume of information produced each day exceeds what a person could process in a lifetime.
This transformation has brought enormous benefits — greater access to knowledge, amplified voices from historically marginalized communities, and faster scientific collaboration. But it has also created new vulnerabilities. The same features that make the modern information ecosystem powerful — speed, scale, low barriers to entry — also make it hospitable to false and misleading content.
The Spectrum of False Information
Not all false information is the same. Understanding the differences between types of problematic content is essential for responding effectively. The three foundational categories — misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation — differ primarily in the intent of the person sharing them.
Misinformation is false or inaccurate information that is shared without the intent to deceive. The person spreading it genuinely believes it to be true, or shares it carelessly without checking. The information itself may be factually correct, but the way it is used is harmful.

These three categories are not always neatly separable. A piece of disinformation created by one actor may become misinformation when ordinary people share it believing it to be true. Context and intent matter — and both can be difficult to determine from the outside.

Notice something epistemologically important here: the truth value of a claim and the intent behind sharing it are independent dimensions. True information can be weaponized (malinformation), and false information can be shared in good faith (misinformation). Conspiracy Theories
Conspiracy theories are explanatory frameworks that attribute events to the secret actions of powerful, malicious groups operating behind the scenes.
