What is Theory of Knowledge (TOK)?

Theory of Knowledge is a core component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme that asks you to step back from what you learn in your other subjects and think critically about how we know what we claim to know. Rather than learning new facts, TOK invites you to examine the nature of knowledge itself: What counts as evidence? How do different disciplines arrive at their conclusions? When should we trust — or question — what we're told?

TOK is fundamentally about epistemology, the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature, sources, and limits of knowledge. You'll explore questions like: Is mathematical knowledge more certain than historical knowledge? Can art teach us something that science cannot? How do our biases shape what we believe? These are not questions with simple right-or-wrong answers, which is precisely what makes TOK both challenging and rewarding. For a thorough introduction, see Chapter 1.

Why is TOK a required part of the IB Diploma?

The IB Diploma Programme aims to develop well-rounded, critically thinking global citizens. TOK serves as the intellectual glue that connects all your other subjects. Without it, you might learn biology, history, and mathematics as isolated silos of information. TOK helps you see the connections and tensions between these disciplines — for instance, how the standards of evidence in the natural sciences differ from those in the arts.

By requiring TOK, the IB ensures that every diploma student has grappled with fundamental questions about knowledge, truth, and perspective. This is not just an academic exercise; these skills transfer directly to real-world decision-making, from evaluating news sources to understanding ethical dilemmas. Do I need any prior philosophy background for this course?

No prior philosophy background is required. This textbook is designed to introduce epistemological concepts from the ground up, defining technical terms the first time they appear. You don't need to have read Plato, Descartes, or any other philosopher before starting.

What you do need is curiosity and a willingness to question assumptions — including your own. If you've ever wondered why people disagree about things despite having access to the same information, or whether your senses can truly be trusted, you're already thinking like an epistemologist. Chapter 1 begins with the most foundational concepts and builds gradually from there.

How is this textbook structured?

The textbook is organised into 16 chapters that follow a logical progression. It begins with foundational concepts like knowledge, belief, and truth in the opening chapters, then moves through reasoning and cognitive biases, explores the major Areas of Knowledge (mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, the arts, and ethics), and concludes with contemporary topics like technology, misinformation, and assessment preparation.

Each chapter features interactive elements, reflection questions, and real-world examples. What are Knowledge Questions and why are they important?

Knowledge Questions (KQs) are open-ended questions about knowledge itself — not questions that can be answered by looking up facts. A factual question asks "What is the boiling point of water?" but a Knowledge Question asks "How do we determine which observations count as scientific evidence?" or "To what extent does language shape what we can know?"

Knowledge Questions are important because they are the engine of TOK. Your TOK essay must respond to a prescribed title that is essentially a Knowledge Question, and your exhibition must connect real-world objects to KQs. Learning to formulate and explore KQs is one of the most valuable skills you'll develop. See Chapter 16 for detailed guidance on crafting strong Knowledge Questions.

What are Areas of Knowledge (AOKs)?

Areas of Knowledge are broad categories that organise the different disciplines through which humans produce knowledge. The traditional TOK framework identifies several AOKs, including mathematics, the natural sciences, the human sciences, history, the arts, ethics, religious knowledge systems, and indigenous knowledge systems. Each AOK has its own methods, standards of evidence, and ways of validating knowledge claims.

For example, mathematics relies on deductive proof from axioms, while the natural sciences depend on empirical observation and experimentation. The arts generate knowledge through creative expression and aesthetic experience. Understanding these differences — and the overlaps between them — is central to TOK. The AOKs are explored beginning in Chapter 9 and continuing through Chapter 13.

What are Ways of Knowing (WOKs)?

Ways of Knowing are the tools and faculties through which we acquire knowledge. The IB traditionally identifies several, including reason, sense perception, language, emotion, imagination, faith, intuition, and memory. Each Way of Knowing has strengths and limitations.

For instance, sense perception gives us direct access to the physical world, but our senses can be deceived by optical illusions or hallucinations. Reason allows us to draw logical conclusions, but the conclusions are only as good as our premises. In practice, we rarely use just one Way of Knowing — most knowledge involves an interplay of several. Language and its role in shaping knowledge is explored in Chapter 7, while reason and argumentation are covered in Chapter 6.

How should I approach the reflection questions in each chapter?

The reflection questions are designed to be genuinely open-ended — there is no single correct answer. The best approach is to first formulate your own initial response, then deliberately consider alternative perspectives. Try to identify the assumptions behind your position. What would someone from a different cultural background, or trained in a different discipline, say?

Writing down your responses (even informally) is far more valuable than just thinking about them, because writing forces you to clarify vague ideas. Many students find it helpful to discuss the questions with classmates, as hearing other perspectives often reveals blind spots in your own thinking. These skills directly prepare you for the TOK essay and exhibition.

How does TOK connect to my other IB subjects?

TOK connects to every subject you study because every subject is a way of producing knowledge. When you're in biology class studying cell division, TOK asks: what makes that knowledge scientific? When you're analysing a poem in English, TOK asks: can art produce knowledge that science cannot? When you're solving equations in mathematics, TOK asks: are mathematical truths discovered or invented?

These connections work both ways. Your subject knowledge gives you concrete examples for TOK discussions, and TOK gives you a critical lens for thinking more deeply about your subjects. Many students find that their understanding of individual subjects improves once they start thinking about the epistemological foundations those subjects rest on. Chapter 9 through Chapter 13 make these connections explicit.

What is the difference between the TOK essay and the TOK exhibition?

The TOK essay is a 1,600-word response to one of six prescribed titles released by the IB each examination session. It requires you to explore a Knowledge Question using examples from different Areas of Knowledge, demonstrating your ability to analyse, compare, and evaluate different perspectives on knowledge.

The TOK exhibition is a different kind of assessment where you select three real-world objects and connect them to one of 35 IA prompts. The exhibition is more personal and concrete — you explain how your chosen objects illustrate something important about how knowledge works in the real world. Both assessments are explored in detail in Chapter 16.

Can I use this textbook to study independently?

Absolutely. The textbook is designed for both classroom use and independent study. Each chapter builds on previous concepts but also includes enough context to be understood on its own. Key terms are defined when first introduced, examples are drawn from diverse disciplines and cultures, and the reflection questions can be explored individually or in groups.

Core Concept Questions

What is the difference between knowledge and belief?

In everyday language, we often use "knowledge" and "belief" interchangeably, but in epistemology they have distinct meanings. A belief is something you hold to be true — you accept it, regardless of whether it actually is true. Knowledge, by contrast, is traditionally understood as belief that meets additional conditions: it must be true, and it must be justified.

For example, if you believe it will rain tomorrow based on a wild guess, and it happens to rain, you had a true belief — but most epistemologists would say you didn't know it would rain because your belief wasn't properly justified. If you believed it would rain because you checked reliable weather data, that justified true belief looks much more like knowledge. The relationship between belief, truth, and justification is explored thoroughly in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.

What does "justified true belief" mean?

Justified True Belief (JTB) is the classical definition of knowledge, dating back to Plato. According to JTB, you know something when three conditions are met: (1) you believe it, (2) it is true, and (3) you have adequate justification for believing it. Each condition is necessary — remove any one, and you don't have knowledge.

If you believe something false, it's just a mistaken belief. If something is true but you don't believe it, you don't know it. If you believe something true but for the wrong reasons (like a lucky guess), you lack justification. The JTB framework is elegant, but it faces serious challenges from Gettier cases, which show that justified true belief may not always be sufficient for knowledge. What is the Gettier Problem?

The Gettier Problem, introduced by philosopher Edmund Gettier in 1963, challenges the classical Justified True Belief definition of knowledge. Gettier presented scenarios where someone has a justified true belief that we intuitively would not call knowledge, because the truth of the belief is due to luck rather than the justification.

Here's a classic example: You see what looks exactly like a sheep in a field and form the justified belief "There is a sheep in that field." It turns out what you saw was actually a dog dressed in a sheep costume — but there is a real sheep hidden behind a hill in the same field. Your belief is justified (it looked like a sheep), and it's true (there is a sheep in the field), but it seems wrong to say you knew there was a sheep there, because your justification didn't connect to the actual sheep. The Gettier Problem has generated decades of philosophical debate about what, if anything, needs to be added to JTB. This is explored in Chapter 2.

What is the difference between personal knowledge and shared knowledge?

Personal knowledge is what you know through your own direct experience, practice, and reflection. It includes things like knowing how to ride a bicycle, your emotional response to a piece of music, or insights gained from your lived experience. Personal knowledge is often difficult to fully articulate or transfer to others.

Shared knowledge, by contrast, is knowledge that belongs to communities and is typically codified in language, symbols, or practices. Scientific theories, mathematical proofs, historical accounts, and cultural traditions are all forms of shared knowledge. The relationship between personal and shared knowledge is dynamic — personal experience can challenge shared knowledge (as when a patient's symptoms don't match a textbook diagnosis), and shared knowledge can shape personal experience (as when learning a new language changes how you perceive the world). What does objectivity mean in TOK?

Objectivity refers to the ideal of forming beliefs and making judgments based on evidence and reason rather than personal feelings, biases, or self-interest. An objective claim is one that is true regardless of any individual's perspective — for example, "Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure."

However, TOK encourages you to examine whether pure objectivity is truly achievable. Every knower brings their own cultural background, cognitive biases, and emotional responses to the process of knowing. The natural sciences aspire to objectivity through methods like controlled experiments and peer review, but even scientists make choices about what to study and how to interpret data. Understanding the tension between the ideal of objectivity and the reality of human subjectivity is a central theme of TOK, discussed in Chapter 1 and Chapter 5.

What is a knowledge claim?

A knowledge claim is an assertion that something is the case — a statement put forward as true. In TOK, we distinguish between first-order knowledge claims and second-order knowledge claims. First-order claims are made within a specific discipline: "The Earth orbits the Sun" (natural science) or "Slavery was a cause of the American Civil War" (history). Second-order claims are about knowledge itself: "Scientific knowledge is more reliable than artistic knowledge" or "Emotion undermines rational thought."

TOK focuses primarily on second-order knowledge claims because they raise the epistemological questions at the heart of the course. When you encounter any knowledge claim, useful questions to ask include: What is the evidence for this claim? What assumptions does it rest on? Could it be wrong? Who is making this claim, and what perspective might they bring? See Chapter 1.

What are the main theories of truth?

There are three major theories of truth explored in TOK. The correspondence theory says a statement is true if it accurately represents or corresponds to reality — "The cat is on the mat" is true if and only if the cat is actually on the mat. The coherence theory says a statement is true if it is logically consistent with a wider system of beliefs. The pragmatic theory says a statement is true if it works — if believing it leads to successful predictions and practical results.

Each theory has strengths and weaknesses. Correspondence seems intuitive but raises the question of how we verify that our statements match reality (since we can only access reality through our senses and reason). Coherence works well in mathematics but allows for internally consistent systems that have no connection to reality. Pragmatism is practical but might count useful falsehoods as "true." These theories are examined in detail in Chapter 2.

What is fallibilism?

Fallibilism is the philosophical position that any of our beliefs could, in principle, be mistaken — even beliefs we feel very confident about. This doesn't mean that all beliefs are equally likely to be wrong, or that we should doubt everything. It means we should remain open to revising our beliefs in light of new evidence or arguments.

Fallibilism is central to scientific thinking. Scientists don't claim to have proven theories beyond all possible doubt; they hold theories as the best current explanations, subject to revision. The history of science is full of examples: Newtonian physics was considered unassailable for centuries before Einstein's relativity showed its limitations. Fallibilism is a healthy middle ground between dogmatic certainty and paralysing scepticism. It is discussed in Chapter 2 and connects to the discussion of scepticism in Chapter 8.

What is the role of evidence in knowledge?

Evidence is the foundation upon which justified beliefs are built. Without evidence, a belief is merely an assertion. But "evidence" means different things in different contexts. In the natural sciences, evidence typically comes from controlled experiments and systematic observation. In history, evidence comes from primary sources like documents, artefacts, and testimonies. In mathematics, evidence takes the form of logical proof.

What counts as good evidence also varies. A single anecdote might be compelling in everyday life but insufficient in medical research, which requires large-scale, randomised trials. Understanding how to evaluate the quality, relevance, and sufficiency of evidence is one of the most practical skills TOK develops. These questions are explored in depth in Chapter 3.

What is the burden of proof?

The burden of proof refers to the responsibility of supporting a knowledge claim with adequate evidence. In general, the burden falls on the person making the claim. If you assert that a new medicine cures a disease, it is your responsibility to provide evidence — it is not the responsibility of others to prove you wrong.

However, the burden of proof varies by context. In criminal law, the prosecution bears a heavy burden ("beyond a reasonable doubt"), while in civil cases it is lighter ("balance of probabilities"). In science, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence — claiming to have discovered a new fundamental force requires far more evidence than claiming a particular flower blooms in spring. Understanding who bears the burden of proof and how heavy that burden should be is essential for evaluating knowledge claims. See Chapter 3.

How do cognitive biases affect knowledge?

Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from rational judgment. They are not random errors but predictable tendencies built into human cognition. Confirmation bias, for example, leads us to seek out and favour information that supports what we already believe while ignoring contradictory evidence. The availability heuristic causes us to overestimate the likelihood of events that come easily to mind (such as plane crashes, which we hear about more than car accidents).

These biases affect knowledge at every level — from individual reasoning to scientific research to public policy. The crucial point is that biases operate unconsciously; you cannot simply decide to be unbiased. Instead, you need specific strategies to counteract them, such as actively seeking disconfirming evidence, using structured decision-making frameworks, and relying on peer review. What is the difference between subjectivity and bias?

Subjectivity and bias are related but distinct. Subjectivity simply means that a perspective is shaped by personal experience, cultural background, or individual interpretation. All human knowers are subjective to some degree — we all see the world from a particular vantage point. Subjectivity is not inherently a problem; in fact, in areas like the arts, personal subjective experience is essential to knowledge.

Bias, by contrast, implies a systematic distortion that leads to unreliable conclusions. A biased perspective is one that consistently favours certain conclusions regardless of the evidence. A historian might have a subjective perspective shaped by their nationality, but they become biased when they consistently interpret evidence to favour their nation's actions. Recognising the difference helps you avoid two common mistakes: dismissing all subjective perspectives as biased, or accepting biased perspectives as merely subjective. See Chapter 1 and Chapter 5.

What is a paradigm shift?

A paradigm shift is a fundamental change in the basic concepts and practices of a discipline. The term was introduced by Thomas Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). Kuhn argued that science doesn't progress through a steady accumulation of facts but through periods of "normal science" (working within an accepted framework) punctuated by revolutionary shifts when the old framework can no longer account for accumulating anomalies.

The shift from Newtonian physics to Einstein's relativity is a classic example. Under the Newtonian paradigm, certain observations (like the precession of Mercury's orbit) were anomalies that couldn't be explained. Einstein's new framework resolved these anomalies but required fundamentally rethinking concepts like space, time, and gravity. Paradigm shifts are important for TOK because they show that even our most well-established knowledge can be overturned. See Chapter 10.

What is the relationship between knowledge and culture?

Culture profoundly shapes knowledge in multiple ways. It influences what questions are asked, what methods are considered appropriate, what counts as evidence, and what conclusions are accepted. For example, different cultures have developed distinct medical traditions (Western biomedicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda) based on different underlying assumptions about the body and health.

Culture also shapes the knower. Your cultural background affects your language, your values, your assumptions about what is "normal," and even your perception. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis suggests that language structure influences thought and perception — speakers of languages with different colour terms may actually perceive colours differently. This doesn't mean knowledge is entirely culturally relative, but it does mean we should be aware of how cultural context shapes both what we know and how we know it. See Chapter 4 and Chapter 7.

What is metacognition and why does it matter for TOK?

Metacognition means "thinking about thinking" — the ability to reflect on your own cognitive processes. When you notice that you're feeling emotionally resistant to an argument, step back to ask why, and then evaluate the argument more carefully, you're engaging in metacognition.

Metacognition matters for TOK because the course requires you to examine not just what you know but how you know it. Without metacognition, you might believe something strongly without ever asking why you believe it or whether your reasoning is sound. Developing metacognitive habits — like regularly questioning your assumptions, noticing when biases might be at work, and reflecting on how your perspective shapes your conclusions — is fundamental to becoming a thoughtful knower. This concept is discussed in Chapter 4.

How does emotion relate to knowledge?

The relationship between emotion and knowledge is more complex than the common assumption that emotion is the enemy of rational thought. Emotions can hinder knowledge — fear can prevent us from considering evidence objectively, and anger can lead us to hasty conclusions. But emotions can also be a source of knowledge. Empathy helps us understand others' experiences, moral emotions like indignation can alert us to injustice, and aesthetic emotions can guide us toward deeper understanding in the arts.

In many Areas of Knowledge, emotion plays an indispensable role. A historian who feels nothing when studying the Holocaust may miss important dimensions of that knowledge. An artist who suppresses emotion may produce technically proficient but epistemically shallow work. The key is not to eliminate emotion but to develop awareness of when it is helping or hindering your pursuit of knowledge. See Chapter 4 and Chapter 12.

What does it mean for knowledge to be "socially constructed"?

Social constructionism is the view that certain categories, concepts, or "facts" are not natural or inevitable but are created and maintained through social practices, language, and institutions. For example, the concept of "race" as a biological category has been largely rejected by geneticists — racial categories are socially constructed, meaning they are created by societies rather than discovered in nature.

This does not mean that socially constructed things are "not real" or don't have real effects. Money is socially constructed (a banknote is just paper), but it has enormous real-world consequences. The social construction of knowledge is important for TOK because it helps us distinguish between knowledge that reflects the natural world and knowledge that reflects human conventions. However, taken to extremes, constructionism can lead to the questionable claim that all knowledge is merely a social construction, including scientific findings about the physical world. This tension is worth exploring carefully.

What is the difference between knowing how and knowing that?

The philosopher Gilbert Ryle distinguished between "knowing that" (propositional knowledge) and "knowing how" (practical knowledge). "Knowing that" involves factual claims — you know that Paris is the capital of France. "Knowing how" involves abilities and skills — you know how to ride a bicycle.

This distinction matters for TOK because much of what we discuss as "knowledge" focuses on propositional knowledge, but practical knowledge is equally important and often harder to articulate. A skilled surgeon knows how to perform an operation in ways that go beyond textbook descriptions. A jazz musician knows how to improvise in ways they may not be able to fully explain. This suggests that knowledge is richer and more varied than any single definition can capture, and that some knowledge may be fundamentally resistant to being put into words. See Chapter 1.

What is the role of imagination in producing knowledge?

Imagination might seem opposed to knowledge — we associate imagination with fiction and knowledge with fact. But imagination plays a crucial role in many Areas of Knowledge. In science, Einstein's thought experiments (imagining riding a beam of light) led to revolutionary insights. In mathematics, imagining geometric transformations or visualising abstract structures is essential. In ethics, the ability to imagine yourself in another's situation is fundamental to moral reasoning.

Imagination allows us to go beyond our immediate experience, to consider possibilities that have not yet been observed, and to create new frameworks for understanding. Without imagination, we would be limited to knowledge of what is directly in front of us. The creative role of imagination in knowledge production is explored in Chapter 12 and is relevant across all Areas of Knowledge.

What is the difference between correlation and causation?

Correlation means that two things tend to occur together — when one changes, the other tends to change as well. Causation means that one thing actually brings about the other. The distinction is critical because humans are naturally inclined to infer causation from correlation, which is a frequent source of error.

For example, ice cream sales and drowning deaths are positively correlated — they both increase in summer. But eating ice cream doesn't cause drowning; both are caused by a third factor (hot weather). This mistake is so common that "correlation does not imply causation" is one of the most important principles in statistical reasoning. In TOK terms, this illustrates how our cognitive shortcuts (pattern recognition) can lead us astray, and why the methods of the natural and human sciences place such emphasis on controlled experiments and careful methodology. What is epistemology?

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge. The word comes from the Greek episteme (knowledge) and logos (study or account). Epistemology asks questions like: What is knowledge? How do we acquire it? What are its limits? What makes a belief justified?

TOK is essentially applied epistemology. While professional epistemologists might debate highly technical philosophical puzzles, TOK asks you to apply epistemological thinking to real-world situations and academic disciplines. When you ask "How do we know this is true?" or "What kind of evidence would we need?" you are doing epistemology. The course gives you a vocabulary and set of frameworks for doing this more systematically and effectively. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 provide the epistemological foundations.

How does sense perception contribute to knowledge?

Sense perception — sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell — is our most direct connection to the physical world. Empiricist philosophers argue that all knowledge ultimately originates in sensory experience. Certainly, the natural sciences depend heavily on observation, and much of our everyday knowledge comes from what we see, hear, and feel.

However, sense perception has well-documented limitations. Optical illusions demonstrate that our visual system can be systematically deceived. Our senses have limited range — we cannot see ultraviolet light or hear ultrasonic sounds. Moreover, perception is not passive; it is shaped by expectations, context, and prior knowledge. Two people can look at the same ambiguous image and see different things. These limitations don't mean sense perception is unreliable, but they do mean it should be used alongside other ways of knowing, such as reason and language, rather than treated as infallible. What does certainty mean in TOK?

Certainty is the state of being entirely confident that something is true, with no room for doubt. In TOK, it is important to distinguish between psychological certainty (feeling sure) and epistemic certainty (having conclusive justification). You can feel psychologically certain about something that is wrong, and you can be epistemically justified in a belief without feeling entirely confident.

Very few areas of knowledge achieve genuine epistemic certainty. Mathematics comes closest — once a theorem is proven from axioms, the conclusion follows necessarily. But even mathematical certainty depends on accepting the axioms as starting points. In the empirical sciences, certainty is virtually unattainable because new evidence could always revise our understanding. This is why TOK encourages you to think in terms of degrees of justification rather than absolute certainty or total ignorance. See Chapter 1 and Chapter 9.

What is the significance of language for knowledge?

Language is far more than a tool for communicating knowledge — it actively shapes what we can know and think. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (also called the linguistic relativity hypothesis) proposes that the structure of our language influences our perception and cognition. While the strong version of this claim (that language completely determines thought) is generally rejected, there is substantial evidence for weaker versions.

For example, the Hopi language structures time differently from English, and speakers of languages with different spatial terms navigate differently. In academic contexts, the specialised vocabulary of each discipline enables precise communication but can also exclude outsiders. Legal language, medical jargon, and mathematical notation all create knowledge that is difficult to access without the relevant linguistic tools. Language can also be used to manipulate through rhetoric, propaganda, and framing effects. See Chapter 7.

Technical Detail Questions

What is the difference between deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning?

These are three fundamental types of reasoning, each with different strengths and limitations.

Deductive reasoning moves from general premises to a specific conclusion. If the premises are true and the logic is valid, the conclusion is guaranteed to be true. Example: "All mammals are warm-blooded. A dog is a mammal. Therefore, a dog is warm-blooded." The conclusion cannot be false if the premises are true.

Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to a general conclusion. It does not guarantee truth but establishes probability. Example: "Every swan I have observed is white. Therefore, all swans are white." This was considered well-supported until black swans were discovered in Australia.

Abductive reasoning (inference to the best explanation) starts with an observation and works backward to the most likely explanation. Example: "The street is wet. The best explanation is that it rained." Unlike deduction, the conclusion is not certain — perhaps a water main broke. Abductive reasoning is extremely common in everyday life and in science. All three types are explored in Chapter 6.

What are the main types of logical fallacies?

A free-market economist and a socialist economist can look at the same unemployment data and reach opposite conclusions because they interpret the data through different theoretical lenses.

People's intuitions about statistical probability, for instance, are notoriously poor. The best approach is to treat intuition as a starting point for investigation rather than a conclusion. How do I distinguish between pseudoscience and real science?

Distinguishing pseudoscience from science requires looking at several features rather than relying on a single criterion. How do I deal with the feeling that "everything is relative" in TOK?

Many students go through a phase in TOK where they feel that since every perspective has limitations and every claim can be questioned, nothing is really true and everything is just a matter of opinion. The key insight is that acknowledging the limitations of knowledge does not mean all claims are equally valid. Testimonial injustice happens when someone's testimony is given less credibility because of prejudice against their social identity — for example, when a woman's medical symptoms are dismissed as emotional, or when an Indigenous person's ecological knowledge is ignored in favour of Western scientific methods.

Hermeneutical injustice occurs when a group lacks the conceptual resources to make sense of their own experiences because those concepts haven't been developed in the dominant culture. For instance, before the concept of "sexual harassment" was named and defined, many people experienced it but lacked the language to identify and communicate what was happening to them. Can artificial intelligence produce genuine knowledge?

AlphaFold, for instance, predicted protein structures that advanced biological knowledge. In this functional sense, AI seems to produce knowledge.

However, several philosophical objections arise. AI lacks understanding — it manipulates symbols according to rules without grasping what those symbols mean (the "Chinese Room" argument). In a filter bubble, the information environment itself is shaped by algorithms you may not even be aware of, making it difficult to know what you're not seeing.

Examples are abundant: for centuries, Western colonial powers dismissed indigenous knowledge systems as "primitive," not because that knowledge was false but because those communities lacked institutional power. Medical research has historically underrepresented women and minorities, leading to gaps in knowledge about how diseases and treatments affect these groups.
