Instead of a recurring companion, we'll design an episodic story — twelve panels, one historical figure, one concept made memorable through narrative. A good story can carry a concept farther than another paragraph of prose; a careless one can launder fiction as history. Our job here is to build the first while avoiding the second. Let's build a mental model.

Why Short-Form, and Why Now

A single paragraph of expository prose and a single twelve-panel story can cover the same concept in roughly the same number of words. They do not, however, land in the reader's memory the same way. Expository prose lives in semantic memory, where it competes with every other fact the reader has read that day; a narrative with a named character, a setting, and a stake can land in episodic memory, where it is remembered the way the reader remembers what happened last Tuesday. The neural and behavioral evidence for this distinction is older than Learning Sciences itself — Endel Tulving's 1972 separation of semantic and episodic memory is the canonical reference — and the practical upshot for textbook authors is clear. When a concept matters enough to remember, and when the concept has a history worth showing, a short-form narrative is often the highest-value use of the reader's next three minutes.

A Short-Form Narrative is a self-contained story, typically under 500 words of dialogue and caption text, told in a compact visual format that a reader completes in a single sitting. The word short is doing real work. Attention economies are brutal. A 40-panel graphic novel chapter about Ada Lovelace is an ambition; a 12-panel story is a shipped artifact. Completion rates drop sharply as artifacts lengthen — the learning-analytics literature puts the falloff somewhere between "steeply" and "cliff" depending on medium — so the pragmatic question is never what's the ideal length? but what's the shortest length that still tells the story? For this book's purposes, the answer we've settled on is twelve panels.

By the end of this chapter you will be able to:

Three ideas from earlier chapters carry their weight into this one. From Chapter 3, Self-Determination Theory's relatedness need explains why a reader who identifies with Ada Lovelace as a human will engage more deeply with her algorithm than the same reader presented with the algorithm alone. From Chapter 4, cognitive load theory gives us our panel-count discipline — twelve panels is a deliberate constraint on extraneous load. And from Chapter 10, the production-pipeline mindset means we are not merely describing graphic novels in the abstract; we are specifying the skill-driven pipeline that generates them.

The Graphic Novel Chapter as Artifact

A Graphic Novel Chapter is a stand-alone section of an intelligent textbook — rendered as a dedicated Markdown page with its twelve panels, captions, and speech bubbles — that tells one historical-figure story tied to one core concept from the main chapter it supplements. Two properties of that definition are load-bearing. First, the graphic novel is supplementary, not on the core reading path. A reader who skips the graphic novel still completes the chapter; a reader who reads it picks up an emotional-memory anchor that the core prose cannot install on its own. Second, the graphic novel is tied to one concept. A story that tries to carry three concepts carries none of them; a story that carries one concept and points at its history can do so with surgical precision.

Where graphic novel chapters sit in the overall architecture is worth naming. They attach to a parent chapter the way a MicroSim does — as a linked sibling artifact — but they occupy a different pedagogical niche. A MicroSim invites the reader to manipulate a variable; a graphic novel invites the reader to identify with a person. Both are forms of active engagement; they activate different neural substrates and serve different retention goals. The table below contrasts the three narrative-and-engagement artifacts we've introduced so far.

The production pipeline for a graphic novel chapter is itself worth seeing before we dive into the components, because each component in the next sections maps to one step in the pipeline.

The pipeline is deliberately modular. Each step produces an artifact that a separate skill consumes; none of the steps contains a secret the others depend on. This matters because any step can be regenerated when the evidence changes — a better reference image for a historical figure, for example, lets step 3 regenerate without touching the script in step 2.

The Twelve-Panel Story

A Twelve Panel Story is the canonical short-form structure this book uses for its graphic novel chapters: twelve sequential panels, each carrying one beat of a compressed three-act arc, presented in a reading order that a textbook reader can complete in under five minutes. Why twelve? Two reasons. Compact enough that the cost to produce is bounded — twelve image generations is a coffee's worth of API spend at current prices — and generous enough for an arc with rising action, a real climax, and a resolution that lands. Eight panels is a vignette; sixteen starts to feel like a chapter of its own; twelve is the sweet spot where constraint meets narrative sufficiency.

Each of the twelve panels has a specific job. The table below gives the canonical job assignments; authors can deviate, but deviation should be a deliberate choice with a written reason, not a drift.

The twelve-panel table is a scaffold, not a straitjacket. A story about a collaborative discovery may need to spend two panels on the collaboration (which pushes the insight back to panel 9 and compresses the climax). A story where the institutional reaction is the concept — think of the reception of Semmelweis's handwashing hypothesis — may invert the usual weight of panels 10 and 11. The point is that the reader's reading cadence expects some arc; whether the arc matches the default table or departs from it deliberately, the story needs one.

Story Arc Structure

Story Arc Structure is the organization of a narrative's beats into a shape that creates and resolves tension. For short-form educational stories, the adapted three-act arc — setup, rising action, climax, resolution — has stayed useful across centuries of narrative practice for a specific structural reason: it matches how human attention allocates itself across a bounded experience. Attention rises through the setup as the reader commits to the story, peaks through the climax, and releases through the resolution. A story that violates this shape forces the reader to allocate attention against the grain of the form, and most readers respond by abandoning the story.

In a twelve-panel container, the act boundaries fall at panels 3, 8, and 10. Setup occupies panels 1–3 (25% of the story), rising action occupies panels 4–8 (42%), climax occupies panels 9–10 (17%), and resolution occupies panels 11–12 (17%). The rising-action allocation is the largest on purpose — this is where the concept actually gets taught, through the protagonist's encounter with the problem's real difficulty. Shortchanging rising action produces stories where the insight arrives unearned; overlong setup produces stories the reader abandons before the concept appears.

Where the Concept Lives in the Arc

It lives in the rising-action panels where the protagonist encounters the concept's difficulty. Readers remember the moment where the problem gets real, not the moment the problem is solved. Design the rising action for cognitive fidelity, and the climax will take care of itself.

Historical Figure Selection

The choice of figure is the single highest-leverage decision in the pipeline, and it's the decision most vulnerable to two distinct failure modes: the convenient famous person default, and the great man distortion. Historical Figure Selection is the deliberate choice of a real person from the history of the field whose documented work illustrates a target concept, whose record supports a faithful narrative, and whose inclusion broadens rather than narrows the reader's picture of how the field actually progressed.

Five criteria guide the selection, and the rubric below is the one we use in practice.

Representation Does including this figure broaden the book's picture of who builds the field? The default-famous-names set is narrow by composition; deliberate inclusion counteracts that bias.
Hero-worship risk Is the figure's story commonly told in a way that erases collaborators, prior work, or cultural context? The great man frame makes science look like solitary genius; the record rarely supports that.

The fifth criterion deserves its own paragraph. The great man fallacy — the narrative habit of attributing collective, iterative scientific progress to individual heroes — is both a pedagogical distortion and a motivational one. It distorts history by collapsing teams, predecessors, and institutional context into a single protagonist. It demotivates readers by implying that scientific contribution is a rare endowment of extraordinary individuals, rather than a skill distributed across the community that readers might one day join. The structural fix is to select figures whose stories require showing collaborators — which is why panel 5 of the canonical arc is reserved for a second named person. A story about Ada Lovelace that names Charles Babbage and Luigi Menabrea is doing the pedagogical work; a story that treats Lovelace as a solitary visionary is trading faithfulness for mythology.

Convenient Fame Is a Trap

Bloom the elephant flagging a warning The first figure who comes to mind for a concept is almost always the most famous one — and the most famous figure is the one whose story has been told most often, usually in the most distorted form. Before committing to Einstein for relativity or Darwin for evolution, ask which collaborator or lesser-named contributor would carry the concept equally well while broadening the book. The well-worn story is the easy story; the well-chosen story is usually the one you had to think about for ten minutes.

Character Design

Character Design in this context is the specification of a historical figure's visual appearance in enough detail that twelve independently generated images depict recognizably the same person. That bar is higher than it sounds. Text-to-image models do not remember the last image they generated; every prompt is answered fresh, and every fresh answer will drift in hair, clothing, age, facial proportions, and a hundred subtler dimensions unless the prompt nails the appearance down.

The solution the pipeline uses is a character style sheet — a block of prompt text, typically 80 to 150 words, that describes the figure's appearance with enough specificity to survive regeneration. The style sheet is included verbatim in every panel prompt. The redundancy is not inefficient; it is the discipline. A style sheet for Ada Lovelace might read: a woman in her late twenties, dark hair pulled back into a neat mid-Victorian chignon with a center part, wearing a high-collared deep-green velvet day dress of the 1840s with cream lace at the cuffs, pale complexion, dark eyes, thoughtful expression, English drawing-room lighting, painterly detail reminiscent of early Victorian portraiture.

Three tools exist to reinforce the style sheet. Reference images — a single high-quality portrait attached to each prompt — lift consistency dramatically in modern models. IP-Adapter and similar identity-preservation techniques let a reference face propagate through a series of prompts. LoRA fine-tunes — small model adaptations trained on a handful of images — can lock a character's appearance almost perfectly but cost hours of training time and are overkill for a twelve-panel story. For most learning-sciences chapters, style sheet plus reference image is the right point on the cost-versus-consistency curve.

Panel Composition

Panel Composition is the arrangement of subject, camera angle, and framing within a single panel to carry a specific emotional and cognitive weight. A story told in twelve identical medium shots is monotonous; a story that varies shot type with arc stage lets the reader's attention rise and fall with the narrative. Composition is one of the highest-leverage moves in prompt engineering because it costs nothing — it's a few words in the prompt — and it changes the whole reading cadence of the finished panel.

The basic vocabulary is worth naming. Wide shot (establishing): the subject is small in the frame; setting dominates. Medium shot: subject fills roughly the middle third of the frame; setting and subject share attention. Close-up: subject's face or hands fill the frame; emotion dominates. Extreme close-up: a detail — a quill tip, an equation on paper — fills the frame; the concept itself is the subject. Over-the-shoulder: viewer positioned behind one character, looking at another; used for dialogue and confrontation. Camera angle adds a second axis. Eye-level: neutral; the viewer is a peer. Low angle: viewer below the subject; confers authority or heroism (use sparingly to avoid hero-worship). High angle: viewer above the subject; confers vulnerability or smallness.

A story that uses the same shot type for every panel reads as flat. A story that cycles through shot types with deliberate pacing — wide, medium, close-up, extreme close-up at the insight — creates a visual rhythm that matches the narrative rhythm. The shot-type column in the panel-plan table is a first-class design decision, not a layout afterthought.

Image Prompt Engineering

Image Prompt Engineering is the craft of writing the text instructions that a generative image model turns into a panel. A panel prompt in this pipeline has four sections, and the order matters because many models weight earlier tokens more heavily than later ones.

  1. Character description (the style sheet, verbatim). The figure's appearance is locked first because it's the most regeneration-fragile element.
  2. Scene and setting. Location, era-specific details, props, lighting.
  3. Composition. Shot type, camera angle, framing, any specific staging notes.
  4. Style modifiers and negative prompts. Art style (e.g., "painterly, early Victorian portrait style"); negatives (e.g., "no text, no speech bubbles, no modern objects, no watermark").

The most important modifier in section 4 is the text negative. Text rendered inside an AI-generated image is unreliable at the time of writing — models misspell words, mangle letterforms, and invent characters from other scripts. The structural fix we adopt is simple and load-bearing: do not ask the model to render speech bubbles or caption text inside the image at all. The image contains the scene; the speech bubbles and captions are layered on top in HTML. The negative prompt enforces this: "no text, no speech bubbles, no signs with readable writing."

Here is the full prompt for a single panel — panel 8, the insight moment from an Ada Lovelace story on algorithmic thinking. Read the prompt as a concrete instance of the four-section structure.

STYLE: Painterly, reminiscent of early Victorian portraiture, rich warm
palette dominated by lamplight gold and deep green. Clean lines, no harsh
shadows, high detail on the handwritten notation (illegible but clearly
mathematical). Transparent or solid-black page backgrounds for overlay.

NEGATIVE: no text, no speech bubbles, no captions, no signs with readable
writing, no modern objects, no watermark, no logo, no blurry faces, no
extra limbs.

The prompt is roughly 200 words. Every word is doing work. Cutting the character description makes the figure drift across panels; cutting the composition makes every panel look the same; cutting the negative prompt lets the model bake garbled text into the scene. A working rule: if a word can be cut without harm, it was already doing no work; if cutting it breaks the panel, it was doing work worth its length.

Image Generation

Image Generation is the API-driven step that turns a panel prompt into a rendered image. The landscape of models available to educational authors has evolved rapidly and will continue to; the specifics below are current at the time of writing in early 2026 and should be treated as a snapshot, not a recommendation that survives the decade.

Three model families dominate the current landscape for this kind of work. Google's Imagen family, accessible through the Gemini API, is strong on photorealistic and painterly styles and integrates well with the rest of the Gemini tool suite; cost is in the $0.04-per-image range. Black Forest Labs' Flux models produce crisp, high-resolution outputs and are available through multiple hosted providers; cost is comparable. Midjourney remains widely used for stylized work, though its API access is more constrained. For most learning-sciences graphic novels, the story-generator skill we cover in Chapter 14 defaults to Imagen through the Gemini API because it is the cheapest path that hits the consistency bar with a reference image attached.

Cost per twelve-panel story currently runs $0.50 to $2 in API spend, plus the reference-image sourcing time. That economics is what makes the whole technique affordable as a textbook supplement. A book that commissioned illustrated stories from a freelance illustrator at previous decade's rates would budget $500 to $2000 per story; the same book with an AI-assisted pipeline budgets a few dollars, which means an author can afford to iterate. The ability to discard the first three attempts and regenerate until the panel lands is what separates the technique from traditional illustration, and it is the ability most authors under-use.

Regenerate Three Times Before Accepting a Panel

The third or fourth regeneration, with minor prompt adjustments between each, is where the panel actually lands. Budget for the iteration. The author who accepts the first panel every time is the author whose story reads flat, without noticing why.

Speech Bubble Design

Speech Bubble Design is the layout and styling of dialogue containers within a panel. In this pipeline the speech bubble is not rendered by the image model; it is layered on top of the panel image in HTML and CSS. That decision is load-bearing for three reasons: AI-rendered text is unreliable; HTML speech bubbles are accessible to screen readers and searchable by crawlers; and HTML bubbles can be edited without regenerating the panel.

Four properties of good speech-bubble design survive the shift to HTML overlay. Placement — the bubble points at its speaker without overlapping the speaker's face or hands. Tail direction — the bubble's pointer (the small triangle) connects bubble to mouth with a clean vector, never bent, never ambiguous between two possible speakers. Reading order — when two characters speak in the same panel, the first speaker's bubble sits visually higher or farther left (in left-to-right reading languages), so the reader parses the dialogue in the intended order. Font — a clean, slightly hand-lettered sans-serif at 14–16px on desktop, which reads as "comic" without crossing into kitsch; fallback to the system sans-serif for accessibility. Each of these properties becomes a parameter in the overlay component that renders the bubble.

The HTML-overlay approach has one additional advantage worth naming: a reader using a screen reader hears the dialogue as text, in order, with the speaker's name announced. A reader using an image model's baked-in speech bubbles hears the image's alt attribute, which — if the panel designer remembered to include dialogue in the alt text — is a single run-on sentence with no speaker differentiation. The structural fix is the overlay approach, and the accessibility payoff is a real one.

Caption Box Writing

Caption Box Writing is the composition of the narrator-voice text that sits outside the panel image, typically as a bordered rectangle at the top or bottom of the panel. The caption box is the book's voice, not any character's voice — present tense, third person, and deliberately spare. Three caption-content patterns carry most of the work in a twelve-panel story.

Time-and-place captions open the story and re-anchor it after any time-jump: "London, 1843. A quiet study." Two beats of specificity, no more; the image carries the rest. Chronology bridges sit between panels that skip time: "Ten years later." Four words can compress a decade. Concept labels — rare but powerful — name the concept the panel is illustrating in the narrator's voice: "What Lovelace is sketching here will be called an algorithm." Captions and dialogue are distinct registers. Captions do not use contractions; they use complete sentences; they do not address the reader as you. Confusing the two registers — captions that sound like dialogue, or dialogue that sounds like a lecture — is the fastest way to break the reader's immersion in the story.

Historical Accuracy Check

Here is the discipline that keeps the whole technique honest. A Historical Accuracy Check is the systematic pass through a drafted story that verifies each claim against documented sources, flags any dramatic license explicitly, and rejects scenes that cannot be reconciled with the record. Without this check, narrative transportation — which we'll discuss next — becomes a laundering mechanism for confident-sounding fiction.

The check has five steps, and each produces an auditable artifact.

  1. Claim enumeration. List every specific factual claim the story makes: dates, places, named collaborators, attributed quotations, described events. A twelve-panel story typically has 15–30 such claims.
  2. Source verification. For each claim, identify a primary or well-sourced secondary reference. Wikipedia's citations are often a useful starting point but are not themselves the citation; follow through to the cited source.
  3. Quotation provenance. Attributed quotations require extra care. An invented quotation from a real person — even a plausible one — is historical fiction being presented as history. The check requires either a documented quotation (preserved verbatim) or a re-labeling of the line as paraphrase or inference from letters.
  4. Dramatic license disclosure. Any scene that compresses time, merges multiple events, or infers dialogue that cannot be documented is flagged in a footnote at the end of the chapter. The footnote does not weaken the story; it respects the reader.
  5. Representation audit. A final pass checks that collaborators and predecessors named in the historical record are represented in the story, and that their contributions are not collapsed into the protagonist's agency. The great-man fix applied after the fact.

A concrete example clarifies the dramatic-license step. If the script shows Lovelace speaking a specific sentence to Babbage, the check asks: is that sentence in the correspondence? If yes, it's a quotation. If no but the sentiment is documented in her letters, the caption acknowledges paraphrase: "In a letter of August 1843, Lovelace expressed something like this idea to Babbage: …" The story loses nothing; the reader gains a line of sight to the real record.

Story Engagement Techniques are the concrete moves that raise each predictor. For imagery: specific era details in the prompt (not "a Victorian study" but "a mahogany desk with a brass oil lamp and mathematical papers covered in tabular notation"). For identification: the figure's name in panel 2, a personal detail in panel 3 (a family letter on the desk, a hand hesitating over a page). For suspense: the question in panel 3 that the climax in panel 9 answers, with the rising-action panels actually getting the question wrong in partial ways before the insight lands.

Here is where narrative transportation becomes ethically consequential, and where the historical-accuracy discipline stops being a nicety and becomes structural. Green and Brock's follow-up research, and subsequent work by Slater and Rouner and others, shows that transported readers engage in reduced counterarguing — they are less likely to mentally challenge claims the story makes while they are inside the story. That is exactly why narrative is such an effective teaching tool. It's also exactly what makes narrative dangerous when the claims are wrong. A historically inaccurate story, read with transportation, installs confident false beliefs that the reader will defend against later correction. The fix is not to abandon narrative — the pedagogical gain is too large to walk away from — but to ensure, through the accuracy check, that the claims the reader absorbs without counterarguing are actually true.

Footgun Patterns in Graphic Novel Production

Three footgun patterns specific to AI-generated graphic novels are worth naming with the three-property framework.

1. Character design drift. Silent: the model generates twelve crisp images with no error. Easy to trigger: any panel prompt that omits or shortens the character style sheet. Delayed damage: the reader notices on panel 5 that the protagonist's hair color changed and spends working memory asking is this the same character? — which is exactly the orienting load the story is supposed to spare them. Structural fix: the style sheet is included verbatim in every panel prompt, and a review step compares panels 1, 6, and 12 side by side before accepting the batch.

2. AI-generated text in images. Silent: the model cheerfully produces what looks like a speech bubble with readable text. Easy to trigger: failing to include a text negative in the prompt, or explicitly asking for dialogue in the image. Delayed damage: readers see misspelled words, invented characters, or garbled writing baked into the panel; the panel has to be regenerated or — worse — ships with the error. Structural fix: a hard rule that all text (dialogue, captions, signage) is overlaid in HTML after image generation; negative prompt explicitly forbids text in the image; a lint pass checks every generated panel for any pixel-text content.

3. Historical hallucination. Silent: LLM-generated dialogue can attribute plausible-sounding quotations to real historical figures with no indication that the quotation is invented. Easy to trigger: asking an LLM to "write dialogue" without a source constraint.
