Welcome to Chapter 2!
Before we can evaluate any database against a utility tree, we need a shared vocabulary for what databases actually are and how they work. This chapter is that vocabulary. The concepts here — storage engines, data models, workload patterns — appear in every ATAM tradeoff discussion from Chapter 3 onward. Let's build the foundation. Let's analyze the tradeoffs!
What a Database Management System Actually Does
When engineers reach for a database, they often think of it as a place to store and retrieve data. That characterization is accurate but radically incomplete. A Database Management System (DBMS) is a software system that manages persistent, structured data with guarantees about correctness, durability, and concurrent access. The "management" part is where nearly all the interesting engineering lives.
A DBMS provides four distinct services that applications could theoretically implement themselves but almost never should:
- Persistence — data survives process restarts, hardware failures, and power loss
- Concurrency control — multiple clients can read and write simultaneously without producing inconsistent results
- Query processing — data is retrieved by describing what is wanted, not how to find it
- Durability — committed writes are never lost, even if the system crashes immediately after the commit acknowledgment
The architectural decisions that shape every database's tradeoff profile — how fast it writes, how consistent it reads, how well it scales — are almost entirely determined by how a specific DBMS implements these four services. Understanding that implementation vocabulary is what makes ATAM analysis of database choices possible.

Every database imposes a data model — the conceptual framework that governs how data is organized and what operations are valid on it. The data model is not the same as the database's file format or storage layout; it is the logical abstraction the application programmer works with. Choosing the right data model for a workload is one of the most consequential early architectural decisions, because mismatched data models produce impedance mismatch (discussed later in this chapter) that compounds throughout the system's lifetime.
The six database paradigms this course covers each embody a distinct data model:

A schema is the formal definition of a data model instance — the specific tables, columns, types, constraints, and relationships for a particular application's data. Schemas exist on a spectrum from rigid to flexible:
- Schema-on-write (relational, column-family): the structure is defined before data is stored; the DBMS enforces it at write time. Violations are rejected. This makes reads fast and queries predictable, but schema changes require migration procedures.
- Schema-on-read (document, key-value): structure is enforced by the application when data is read; the DBMS stores arbitrary values. This enables rapid iteration but pushes validation responsibility to application code — which often means it doesn't happen.
- Schema evolution is the process of changing a schema while the system is live. Every paradigm handles this differently, and schema migration complexity is a significant operational complexity driver in long-lived systems.
Query Languages and Query Expressiveness
A query language is the interface through which applications describe what data they want. Query languages matter architecturally because they determine what queries are possible, what queries are efficient, and where query logic must live when the query language cannot express a required operation.
Query expressiveness measures the breadth of questions a query language can answer natively within the database — without pulling data into the application and computing in code. A highly expressive language (SQL with window functions, CTEs, and lateral joins) can answer questions that a less expressive language (key-value GET/SET) cannot formulate at all.
The tradeoff is real: query expressiveness correlates with query complexity, which correlates with optimizer cost and operational sensitivity. SQL's expressiveness is why relational databases have complex query optimizers, expensive EXPLAIN plans, and entire specialist roles dedicated to query tuning. A key-value store's inexpressiveness is why its query performance is predictable enough to promise sub-millisecond SLAs.
The following spectrum maps common query languages to their expressiveness and associated complexity:

When a query language cannot express a required query, the application must retrieve more data than needed and filter in application memory. This pattern — client-side filtering — is a performance antipattern that consistently appears in database misfit situations. Identifying it during ATAM analysis is a signal that the data model or query language may be mismatched to the workload.
Database Indexes
A database index is a secondary data structure maintained alongside the primary data, designed to answer specific queries faster than scanning the full dataset. Indexes are the primary mechanism by which databases achieve selective read performance at scale.
Every index type encodes a different access pattern:
- B-tree index: supports equality and range queries on ordered columns; the dominant index type in relational databases
- Hash index: supports equality lookups in O(1); cannot support range queries; common in key-value stores and hash partitioning
- LSM-tree (Log-Structured Merge-tree): optimized for sequential writes; trades write speed for read amplification; dominant in column-family stores
- Inverted index: maps values to the rows that contain them; the foundation of full-text search
- Approximate Nearest-Neighbor (ANN) index (HNSW, IVF): finds vectors similar to a query vector; the foundation of vector search
The performance equation for indexes is not one-sided. Every index maintained on a table adds write overhead, because every INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE must update all affected indexes as part of the write path. A table with eight indexes may read eight times faster and write eight times slower than the same table with no indexes. This write amplification is a direct sensitivity point for write-heavy workloads.
Index the Query, Not the Table
A common mistake is to index every column "just in case." The right approach is to index the queries you have, not the data you store. Start with no indexes, identify your slowest queries under realistic load, then add indexes that specifically accelerate those query patterns. An index that is never used still pays the write-amplification tax on every write.
The Query Optimizer
The query optimizer is the component responsible for transforming a declarative query (what the application wants) into an efficient execution plan (how the DBMS will retrieve it). For databases with expressive query languages, the optimizer is one of the most complex components in the system.
Optimizers function by enumerating candidate execution plans and estimating their cost using statistics about the data — column cardinality, value distribution histograms, table sizes, index selectivity. The optimizer selects the plan with the lowest estimated cost. When statistics are stale or absent, the optimizer's estimates diverge from reality, and "optimal" plans become catastrophically slow.
Understanding optimizer behavior is critical for ATAM analysis because optimizer quality is a hidden sensitivity point. Two databases that support the same SQL syntax may produce execution plans whose performance differs by orders of magnitude on the same query and data distribution. This is not a theoretical concern — it is a routine source of production incidents during database migrations.
Storage Engines
The storage engine is the component responsible for how data is physically organized on disk, how writes are applied, and how reads are served. It is the lowest layer of the DBMS that most engineers interact with indirectly through performance characteristics, and it is one of the most consequential architectural choices a database makes.
Two storage engine architectures dominate modern databases:
B-tree engines organize data in a balanced tree structure where leaf pages hold sorted rows (or row references). Reads are efficient because data is stored in sorted order and the tree structure provides O(log n) lookup. Writes are update-in-place: the page containing the modified row is read into the buffer pool, updated, and written back. This makes random writes expensive on spinning disks and creates write amplification — a single logical write may require multiple physical page writes.
LSM-tree (Log-Structured Merge-tree) engines abandon update-in-place in favor of sequential writes to an in-memory buffer (memtable), which is periodically flushed to immutable sorted files on disk (SSTables). Background compaction merges SSTables to reclaim space and maintain read performance. This architecture dramatically reduces write latency by converting random I/O to sequential I/O, but at the cost of read amplification — a read must check multiple SSTables and the memtable, and compaction consumes background I/O.

Storage Engine Choice Echoes Through the ATAM Analysis
The storage engine is a root-level sensitivity point. When you see a database's write throughput scenario in a utility tree, the answer almost always traces back to whether the underlying engine is LSM-tree or B-tree. This connection — engine → write amplification → write latency scenario → utility tree leaf — appears in Chapters 5 (Key-Value), 6 (Column-Family), and again in Chapter 10 (ACID Transactions).
Data Serialization
Data serialization is the process of encoding data structures into a format suitable for storage or transmission, and deserializing them back. Serialization affects the database at two points: how data moves between the application and the database (wire protocol), and how data is stored on disk (storage format).
Common serialization formats in database contexts include:
- Row formats (PostgreSQL tuple, MySQL row): store all columns of a row contiguously; efficient for OLTP point lookups that need all columns of a record
- Columnar formats (Parquet, ORC, Arrow): store all values of a column contiguously; efficient for OLAP aggregate queries that scan one or two columns across millions of rows
- Document formats (BSON, MessagePack): encode arbitrary nested structures; used by document databases and wire protocols
- Protocol Buffers / Thrift / Avro: schema-driven binary serialization used in inter-service communication and log-structured systems
The choice between row and columnar storage is one of the clearest examples of a tradeoff point in database architecture: row storage is a sensitivity point for OLTP read performance (all columns of one row in one I/O), while columnar storage is a sensitivity point for OLAP aggregate performance (all values of one column in sequential I/O). A database cannot optimize both simultaneously — which is the foundational reason OLTP and OLAP workloads have historically required different database systems.
Workload Characterization
Before any ATAM analysis can proceed meaningfully, the workload the database must handle must be characterized. Workload characterization is the process of describing a system's data access patterns in terms that predict which database architectures will succeed or fail.
The primary dimensions of workload characterization are:
- Read/write ratio: the proportion of read operations to write operations over time
- Latency requirements: the maximum acceptable time per individual operation (e.g., p99 < 10ms)
- Throughput requirements: the number of operations the system must sustain per second
- Data volume: how much data the database must manage at peak capacity
- Query pattern: whether queries are simple point lookups, complex joins, full-text searches, or aggregate scans
These dimensions do not vary independently. A system with high write throughput requirements and low write latency requirements simultaneously is far more constrained than one with just one of those requirements — and understanding the interaction between them is where workload analysis produces genuine architectural insight.
Read/Write Ratio
The read/write ratio expresses how many read operations occur for every write operation. A ratio of 10:1 (ten reads per write) characterizes most OLTP systems. A ratio of 100:1 or higher characterizes caching layers and read-heavy content delivery. A ratio of 1:10 or lower (more writes than reads) characterizes ingestion-heavy systems like IoT telemetry collectors and financial event logs.
Read/write ratio matters because almost every database design decision that improves read performance degrades write performance, and vice versa:
- Indexing: adds read speed, subtracts write speed
- Replication for read scaling: adds read throughput, adds write propagation overhead
- LSM-tree storage: improves write throughput, adds read amplification
- In-memory caching: dramatically improves read latency, adds cache invalidation complexity for writes
A team that mis-characterizes its read/write ratio will optimize for the wrong half of the workload. This is not hypothetical — it is one of the most common root causes of database selection regrets.
Latency vs. Throughput
Latency and throughput are frequently conflated but describe fundamentally different properties of a system's performance:
- Latency is the time elapsed from the moment an individual request is issued to the moment a response is received. It is measured per-request and typically expressed as a percentile (p50, p95, p99, p99.9). Latency is experienced by the user.
- Throughput is the rate at which the system processes requests over time, expressed in operations per second (ops/sec), transactions per second (TPS), or bytes per second. Throughput is a property of the system as a whole.
These properties exist in tension. For a single database node, maximizing throughput often requires batching operations together — which increases per-operation latency. Minimizing latency often requires prioritizing individual operations over batch efficiency — which reduces throughput. Understanding which of these is the binding constraint for a given workload is essential for accurate utility tree scenario construction.
OLTP, OLAP, and HTAP Workloads
The most consequential workload distinction in database architecture is the division between transactional and analytical workloads. This distinction — and the hybrid that bridges it — appears as an architectural driver in almost every database selection scenario in this book.
Before examining these three patterns in detail, understand that they are not primarily a property of the data — they are a property of how the data is accessed. The same customer data might be accessed in OLTP fashion by a purchase flow and in OLAP fashion by a monthly revenue report. The architectural challenge is that these access patterns favor radically different storage organizations.
OLTP Workload
Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) describes workloads characterized by high volumes of short, concurrent transactions that read and modify small numbers of rows. OLTP systems serve user-facing operations: purchase transactions, reservation confirmations, account balance updates, user authentication.
The defining characteristics of an OLTP workload are:
- High concurrency: hundreds to thousands of simultaneous users, each issuing independent transactions
- Low latency requirement: user interactions require sub-second response times
- Read/write mix: typically 70–95% reads, 5–30% writes, but writes must be fast and consistent
- Small result sets: queries retrieve one record or a small number of related records
- Strong consistency: concurrent writers must not produce anomalous results; ACID guarantees are expected
Row-oriented storage with B-tree indexes is well-suited for OLTP because point lookups and row-level updates are its dominant access patterns. When a purchase transaction updates a user's balance, it needs exactly one row's columns — all of them — and the write must commit atomically.
OLAP Workload
Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) describes workloads characterized by complex queries that aggregate large volumes of historical data. OLAP systems serve analytical and reporting functions: monthly revenue summaries, user retention cohorts, supply chain forecasts.
The defining characteristics of an OLAP workload are:
- Low concurrency: a small number of simultaneous analysts running complex queries
- High query latency acceptable: a dashboard refresh in 5 seconds is acceptable; a transaction confirmation in 5 seconds is not
- Read-dominant: historical data is rarely modified; the dominant operation is read-and-aggregate
- Large result sets (scan-heavy): queries scan millions or billions of rows to produce aggregate results
- Relaxed consistency: slight data staleness (hourly refresh, ETL lag) is usually acceptable
Columnar storage is well-suited for OLAP because aggregate queries scan one or two columns across vast datasets. A query computing the average order value for the last quarter only needs the order_amount and created_at columns — columnar storage delivers those columns as sequential disk reads, while row storage would read every column of every order row just to extract two values.
HTAP Workload
Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) describes workloads that require both OLTP and OLAP access patterns against the same dataset, with minimal latency between data being written and being available for analysis.
Classic OLTP/OLAP separation solved the problem by running separate systems: OLTP transactions written to a relational database, nightly ETL jobs loading data into a data warehouse for OLAP queries. This architecture has two costs: ETL latency (analytics see yesterday's data, not today's) and operational complexity (two systems to operate, monitor, and keep synchronized).
HTAP architectures — implemented by systems like TiDB, SingleStore, and Google AlloyDB — attempt to serve both workloads from a single system by maintaining both row-oriented and columnar views of the same data. This eliminates ETL latency but introduces significant internal complexity. The sensitivity point is isolation: OLAP scans must not degrade OLTP transaction latency, which requires careful workload routing and storage engine design.

Data volume scaling describes how a database's performance, architecture, and operational complexity change as the amount of stored data grows. Volume scaling is not a linear problem — many databases that perform acceptably at 10 GB exhibit qualitative behavioral changes at 1 TB and again at 100 TB.
The critical scaling thresholds for a given database architecture are determined by:
- Buffer pool hit rate degradation: as data outgrows RAM, the percentage of reads served from disk increases, and latency rises non-linearly
- Index size growth: B-tree depth increases logarithmically with data size; at extreme scale, index pages that once fit in L1 cache no longer fit in RAM
- Compaction overhead: LSM-tree databases at high data volumes spend increasing CPU and I/O on background compaction, which competes with foreground read/write operations
- Horizontal partitioning threshold: many databases require sharding (partitioning data across multiple nodes) only above certain volume thresholds; the operational complexity jump at that threshold is a significant risk factor
Volume scaling is a first-class ATAM scenario for any system expected to grow. A utility tree scenario of the form "database sustains p99 read latency below 20ms as data volume grows from 500 GB to 10 TB over 18 months" is an architectural driver that eliminates several candidate architectures immediately.
Impedance Mismatch
Impedance mismatch is the structural friction that occurs when the data model a database imposes does not align naturally with the data structures the application uses. The term originates from electrical engineering (where impedance mismatch causes signal loss at circuit boundaries) and describes the same phenomenon in software: energy is lost translating between representations.
