16.1 Introduction

More often, there is a discrepancy — a voltage that should be 3.3 V reads 2.9 V, or a filter that should cut off at 1 kHz starts rolling off at 800 Hz. These gaps between prediction and measurement are not failures; they are the most informative moments in engineering. The essential instruments in an electronics lab are the multimeter, oscilloscope, function generator, DC power supply, and spectrum analyzer. 16.2 The Multimeter

Voltage Measurement

A voltmeter is connected in parallel with the component or node being measured. To minimize disturbing the circuit, the voltmeter must have a very high input impedance — typically 10 MΩ on most DMMs. A DC voltage measurement uses the DMM's DC mode; for AC voltages, True RMS meters correctly handle non-sinusoidal waveforms while average-responding meters give accurate results only for pure sine waves.

Current Measurement

An ammeter is connected in series — the circuit must be broken and the meter inserted into the break so that all current flows through it. The ammeter has very low input impedance (ideally zero) to avoid adding resistance to the loop. Select the correct current range before connecting: overcurrent causes a blown fuse, not just an off-scale reading.

Never Connect an Ammeter in Parallel

Connecting an ammeter across a component creates a near-short circuit. The meter's low resistance will draw very large current, blowing the meter's internal fuse and potentially damaging the circuit. Always insert the meter in series.

Resistance Measurement

The ohmmeter applies a known test current and measures the resulting voltage drop to calculate resistance. The oscilloscope displays voltage as a function of time. Time Base

The time base sets the horizontal scale in seconds per division (s/div). The graticule has 10 horizontal divisions, so the total time window is \(10 \times \text{(s/div)}\). To display a waveform usefully, set the time base so that one to three full periods are visible. For a 1 kHz sine wave (\(T = 1\) ms), a setting of 200 µs/div shows two complete cycles across 10 divisions.

Vertical Sensitivity

The vertical sensitivity sets the voltage scale in volts per division (V/div). The graticule has 8 vertical divisions, so the total vertical range is \(8 \times \text{(V/div)}\). Adjust sensitivity so the waveform occupies 4–6 divisions for maximum readability. A waveform that fills only 1–2 divisions has poor amplitude resolution; one that clips at the top and bottom is off-scale.

16.4 The Function Generator

A function generator produces standard test waveforms — sine, square, triangle, pulse — at selectable frequency, amplitude, and DC offset. Output Impedance and the 50 Ω Rule

When driving a high-impedance circuit input (much greater than 50 Ω), nearly the full open-circuit voltage appears at the load, which is approximately twice the panel-indicated value.

The DC power supply provides controlled, regulated DC voltage and current. Two operating modes are essential to understand:

Constant Voltage (CV) mode — The supply maintains the set output voltage regardless of load current, up to the current limit. This is the normal operating mode for powering circuits.

Constant Current (CC) mode — When the load demands more current than the set limit, the supply reduces its voltage to maintain the current limit. The front panel indicator changes from CV to CC. This mode protects both the supply and the circuit — setting a conservative current limit before powering an untested circuit prevents damage from wiring errors.

Set the Current Limit First

Before powering a new or repaired circuit, set the supply current limit conservatively (e.g., 100 mA for low-power circuits). If the circuit draws more than expected, the supply will enter CC mode rather than sourcing damaging current. Verify the CC LED is off under normal operation.

Spectrum Analyzer

A spectrum analyzer displays amplitude as a function of frequency — the frequency-domain view of a signal. While an oscilloscope shows time-domain waveforms, the spectrum analyzer reveals harmonic content, interference, and distortion that may be invisible in the time domain.

Key applications include measuring Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), verifying filter stopband attenuation, identifying noise sources, and confirming that amplifier output is spectrally pure. 16.6 Measurement Techniques

Voltage and Current Measurement

For DC voltage at a node, connect the DMM black probe to ground and the red probe to the node. Always verify the DMM is in voltage mode before making contact — connecting a meter set to current mode across a low-impedance source creates a near-short circuit. For AC voltage on an oscilloscope, connect the probe ground clip to circuit ground, touch the probe tip to the node, and adjust V/div and time base for a clear display.

For current, the preferred indirect method using an oscilloscope avoids breaking the circuit: insert a known small resistor (called a sense resistor) in series with the branch of interest, measure the voltage across it with the oscilloscope, and calculate:

Choose \(R_{sense}\) small enough that its voltage drop does not significantly affect circuit operation (typically 1–10 Ω for milliamp-range circuits).

Frequency Measurement

With an oscilloscope, measure the period \(T\) by counting the number of horizontal divisions between two identical points on consecutive cycles (e.g., rising zero crossings), then multiplying by the s/div setting:

For higher accuracy, use the oscilloscope's automatic frequency measurement or a dedicated frequency counter, which can resolve frequency to many more significant figures than counting divisions.

Phase Measurement

To measure the phase difference between two signals of the same frequency, display both on a dual-channel oscilloscope with the same time base. Measure the time delay \(\Delta t\) between corresponding reference points (typically rising zero crossings) on the two signals. Calculate phase angle \(\phi\):

\[\phi = \frac{\Delta t}{T} \times 360°\] where \(T\) is the period of the waveform and \(\Delta t\) is the time between corresponding points on the two channels. If CH2 lags CH1, \(\Delta t\) is positive and \(\phi\) is a positive (lagging) phase angle.

Worked Example — Phase Measurement

A 2 kHz sinusoidal voltage is applied to an RC circuit. On the oscilloscope (time base: 100 µs/div), CH1 shows the input and CH2 shows the output. The rising zero crossing of CH2 occurs 1.5 divisions after that of CH1.

Step 1: Find \(\Delta t\): \[\Delta t = 1.5 \text{ div} \times 100\,\mu\text{s/div} = 150\,\mu\text{s}\]

Step 2: Find the period \(T\): \[T = \frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{2000} = 500\,\mu\text{s}\]

Step 3: Calculate phase: \[\phi = \frac{150\,\mu\text{s}}{500\,\mu\text{s}} \times 360° = 108°\]

The output lags the input by 108°. This is consistent with an RC low-pass circuit operating well above its corner frequency.

16.7 Oscilloscope Probes and Compensation

The oscilloscope probe is not a passive wire — it is a precision component that determines what the oscilloscope actually sees. Choosing the wrong probe or failing to compensate it properly produces measurements that appear valid but are systematically wrong.

1X vs. 10X Probes

A 1X (direct) probe connects the circuit directly to the oscilloscope input with minimal attenuation. It has relatively low input impedance (1 MΩ) and high input capacitance (~100 pF). This high capacitance loads the circuit heavily at high frequencies, limiting useful bandwidth to around 10–20 MHz.

A 10X probe includes an internal 9 MΩ series resistor that, combined with the oscilloscope's 1 MΩ input resistance, forms a 10:1 voltage divider. The oscilloscope compensates for this attenuation in its display. The key benefit is that the probe's input capacitance is dramatically reduced (~10 pF vs. ~100 pF), greatly reducing loading and extending usable bandwidth to 200 MHz or more.

Use the 10X probe for the vast majority of measurements. Use 1X only when measuring signals too small to resolve with 10X attenuation.

Probe Compensation Procedure

A 10X probe contains a small adjustable capacitor (trimmer) in parallel with the 9 MΩ resistor. This trimmer must be adjusted to match the oscilloscope's input capacitance. An improperly compensated probe distorts the frequency response — most visibly on square waves:

  • Under-compensated: Square wave corners are rounded (excessive low-pass filtering)
  • Over-compensated: Square wave shows overshoot and ringing at transitions
  • Correctly compensated: Flat top and bottom with sharp, clean corners

Compensation procedure:

  1. Connect the probe tip to the oscilloscope's 1 kHz calibration output (marked CAL on most scopes).
  2. Connect the probe ground clip to the adjacent ground terminal.
  3. Set the scope to display the square wave clearly (e.g., 500 µs/div, 500 mV/div).
  4. Observe the corner shape.
  5. Using a non-metallic trimmer tool, adjust the probe's compensation trimmer (usually at the BNC connector end) until the square wave top is flat and corners are sharp.
  6. Repeat each time the probe is used on a different oscilloscope.

Compensate on Each Oscilloscope

Probe compensation is specific to the probe–oscilloscope pair. A probe compensated on one scope may be incorrectly compensated on a different scope. Always re-check compensation when changing equipment.


16.8 Triggering and Coupling

Triggering

Triggering determines when the oscilloscope begins drawing a new sweep across the display. For a repetitive waveform to appear stable rather than rolling or flickering, each new sweep must begin at exactly the same point on the waveform. The trigger circuit detects when the chosen signal crosses a set voltage threshold on the chosen edge.

The three primary trigger controls are:

  • Source: Which input the trigger monitors — CH1, CH2, External, or Line (power frequency). Trigger on the channel carrying the reference or most stable signal.
  • Level: The voltage threshold at which the trigger fires. Set the level to a voltage the waveform actually reaches, in a region with a clean, monotonic edge.
  • Edge: Whether to trigger on a rising edge (positive slope) or falling edge (negative slope) as the signal crosses the trigger level.

Auto trigger mode forces sweeps to occur even without a valid trigger event, producing a running (unstable) display if the trigger is not set correctly — useful for finding a signal. Normal trigger mode only sweeps when a valid trigger event occurs, causing the display to hold the last captured waveform until a new trigger fires — necessary for single-shot or intermittent events.

AC and DC Coupling

DC coupling passes the complete input signal — both DC and AC components — directly to the vertical amplifier. This is the correct choice for measuring DC levels, viewing the full waveform including its offset, and most general measurements.

AC coupling inserts a series capacitor that blocks the DC component, passing only the AC variation. This is useful when a small AC signal rides on a large DC offset — switching to AC coupling removes the offset, allowing the vertical scale to be increased to resolve the AC detail. It is also commonly used to examine ripple on power supply outputs.

AC Coupling Distorts Low-Frequency Signals

AC coupling is implemented with a high-pass filter. For signals at or below a few hertz, the AC coupling capacitor does not fully pass the signal, causing the displayed waveform to droop or appear distorted. Use DC coupling for any signal with frequency content below ~10 Hz.


16.9 Breadboards and Prototyping

A breadboard (solderless breadboard) enables rapid circuit construction without permanent connections. Components and wire leads are inserted into spring-loaded contacts arranged in a standard pattern.

Breadboard Anatomy

Terminal strips run horizontally in groups of 5 connected holes. Inserting a component lead into any hole in a group of 5 connects it to the other 4 holes in that group. The central gap separates the two halves of each row, allowing ICs to span it with each pin in its own independent group.

Bus strips run the full length of the board on both sides and are used for power (red strip, \(+V_{CC}\)) and ground (blue or black strip). These long strips allow easy power distribution to any circuit section.

Breadboard Limitations

Breadboards introduce parasitic effects that limit their usefulness at higher frequencies:

  • Parasitic capacitance: ~2 pF between adjacent terminal strips. Above ~10 MHz, this capacitance introduces significant signal coupling and phase shift.
  • Contact resistance: Each spring contact adds a few ohms, which is significant for very low-resistance circuits.
  • Reliability: Worn springs cause intermittent connections that are difficult to diagnose. A connection that looks correct may not make electrical contact.
  • Current limit: Each terminal strip is rated for ~1 A. High-current circuits require soldered connections.

Best practices: - Use red wire for all positive supply connections and black for ground — consistently. - Keep wires short and lying flat on the board to minimize inductance and stray coupling. - Connect power supply bypass capacitors (0.1 µF ceramic) directly at IC power pins. - Verify connections with a continuity test or ohmmeter before applying power.


16.10 Soldering

Soldering creates a permanent, low-resistance metallic bond between component leads and a circuit board or wire. A quality solder joint is both mechanically robust and electrically reliable.

Characteristics of a Good Solder Joint

  • Shiny appearance: A properly heated joint has a bright, reflective surface. Dull or grainy appearance indicates a cold joint.
  • Concave fillet: Solder flows up the component lead and onto the pad in a smooth concave meniscus. A blob of solder sitting on top without flowing indicates insufficient heat.
  • Component lead visible: The lead outline should be visible through the solder. This confirms the solder wetted the lead properly.

Soldering procedure: 1. Heat the junction of the pad and component lead simultaneously with the iron tip (not just the lead). 2. Apply solder to the junction — not to the iron tip — so the solder flows by capillary action. 3. Remove the solder, then the iron. 4. Allow the joint to cool without moving the component for 2–3 seconds. 5. Inspect the joint under good lighting. Reheat and add flux if the joint appears cold.


16.11 Circuit Debugging

When a circuit does not behave as expected, a systematic debugging strategy finds the problem faster than random probing. The key insight is that a circuit can only fail in a finite number of ways — following a logical sequence narrows the possibilities quickly.

Debugging Sequence

  1. Verify power: Measure supply voltage at the IC power pins — not just at the power supply terminals. A voltage drop across a bad connection, wrong wire, or blown trace can deprive a circuit of supply voltage entirely. Confirm both positive supply and ground connections.
  2. Check connections: Follow each connection in the schematic to the physical circuit. A misplaced wire is the single most common cause of circuit failure, especially on breadboards.
  3. Divide and conquer: If the circuit has multiple stages (e.g., filter followed by amplifier followed by output driver), test each stage independently by injecting a known signal at its input and observing its output. This isolates which stage fails.
  4. Signal trace: Starting from the input (where the signal is known), follow the signal forward through the circuit, checking each node. The point where the signal disappears or becomes incorrect is the fault location.
  5. Compare to theory: At each node, calculate what the voltage or waveform should be. When the measured value disagrees with calculation, the fault is nearby — check component values, orientation (polarized components), and connections.

16.12 Measurement Errors and Loading

Every measurement instrument, when connected to a circuit, interacts with that circuit. Understanding how instruments load the circuit — and quantifying the resulting measurement error — is essential for interpreting readings correctly.

Voltage Measurement Loading Error

When a voltmeter with internal resistance \(R_{meter}\) is connected across a source with Thevenin resistance \(R_{source}\), the meter and source resistance form a voltage divider. The meter reads:

\[V_{measured} = V_{actual} \times \frac{R_{meter}}{R_{meter} + R_{source}}\] The fractional loading error is: \[\text{Error} = 1 - \frac{R_{meter}}{R_{meter} + R_{source}} = \frac{R_{source}}{R_{meter} + R_{source}}\]

The loading error is negligible when \(R_{meter} \gg R_{source}\). A 10 MΩ meter measuring across a 1 kΩ source introduces only 0.01% error. The same meter measuring across a 1 MΩ source introduces nearly 9% error.

Worked Example — Loading Error Calculation

A circuit has a Thevenin equivalent of \(V_{th} = 5\) V and \(R_{th} = 500\) kΩ. A DMM with \(R_{meter} = 10\) MΩ is used to measure the output.

Step 1: Apply the loading formula: \[V_{measured} = 5 \times \frac{10\,\text{M}\Omega}{10\,\text{M}\Omega + 0.5\,\text{M}\Omega} = 5 \times \frac{10}{10.5} = 4.762\,\text{V}\]

Conclusion: The meter reads 4.76 V instead of the actual 5 V — a 4.76% error. For high-source-impedance circuits, a higher-input-impedance instrument (e.g., an electrometer with 10 GΩ input) or an op-amp buffer should be used to isolate the meter from the circuit.

Other Error Sources

  • Calibration error: All instruments drift over time. Certified calibration against traceable standards corrects systematic offset and gain errors.
  • Resolution error: A DMM with 3½-digit display resolves to 1 mV on the 2 V range — readings between two counts are rounded. An oscilloscope with 8-bit ADC has 256 vertical levels across the full scale.
  • Temperature drift: Most instruments specify accuracy at 23°C ±5°C. At other temperatures, accuracy degrades — important for precision measurements in temperature-controlled environments.
  • Probe ground lead inductance: The long ground clip wire on an oscilloscope probe has inductance (~30 nH for a 15 cm lead). Calibration

16.13 Safety Practices

Electrical hazards are invisible and act faster than human reflexes. The safety habits established in these labs must be correct from the start — they are not optional procedures to follow when convenient, but practices ingrained through deliberate repetition until they become automatic.

Fundamental Safety Rules

  1. Power off before making or changing connections. Verify with a meter that voltage is absent before touching any circuit node. Never trust a switch to be off — measure.
  2. One-hand rule. When probing a live circuit that cannot be powered down, keep one hand behind your back or in a pocket. This prevents current from flowing across the chest through the heart — the most dangerous path for electrical current.
  3. Discharge capacitors. Large capacitors (electrolytic, film capacitors in power supplies) store charge that persists after the supply is removed. Discharge through a resistor (not a short circuit) before touching circuits that have been energized.
  4. Set current limits on the power supply. Before powering an untested circuit, set the current limit to a safe value. The supply will enter CC mode if a wiring error causes excessive draw, protecting the circuit.
  5. Remove jewelry. Rings, bracelets, and watches can complete an accidental circuit path and cause severe burns. Remove all metallic jewelry before working on any circuit.
  6. Inspect equipment. Before use, check cables and probes for cracked insulation, damaged connectors, or exposed conductors. Do not use damaged equipment.
  7. Never work alone on high-voltage equipment. At voltages above mains level (120/240 V AC), a second person must be present and know how to cut power and provide first aid.

Respect Voltage — Even Low Voltages

The widely cited 50 V safety threshold assumes dry, intact skin. Wet skin, cuts, or contact points that bypass skin resistance (under fingernails, through broken skin) dramatically lower the threshold for dangerous current. A current of only 10–20 mA across the chest can cause ventricular fibrillation. When in doubt, treat any unknown voltage as dangerous.

Never Short Mains Voltage

Line voltage (120 V AC or 240 V AC) is present in wall outlets, transformers, and power supply internals. Never probe inside a powered power supply or connect test equipment to line voltage without proper isolation equipment and training. Even a brief contact can be fatal.
