Introduction

Context graphs are not domain-specific — the same graph architecture, decision trace schema, and agent integration patterns apply across every enterprise domain where AI must make or support decisions. What varies by domain is the specific decision types captured, the relevant entity relationships, the applicable policies, and the volume and velocity of decisions.

This chapter presents eight domain-specific use cases, organized to show: the decision problem being solved, the key entities and relationships in the context graph, the decision trace structure, and the agent pattern that enables automation. Together these use cases provide a pattern library that practitioners can adapt to their specific organizational context.

Each use case also identifies the characteristic signal that indicates when a workflow is ready for context graph automation: high headcount in the decision function, a high rate of exceptions to the standard rule, and significant cross-system synthesis required to reach a defensible decision.

Finance: Revenue Reporting Exception Handling

The problem. Finance teams at large organizations spend a disproportionate amount of time on revenue reporting exceptions: cases where revenue does not fit neatly into the standard recognition schedule because of multi-element arrangements, concessions, contract modifications, out-of-period adjustments, or intercompany eliminations. Each exception requires: looking up the applicable accounting policy, finding historical precedents for similar exceptions, assembling data from the billing system and the contract management system, getting controller sign-off, and documenting the justification. An experienced controller can process 8-12 exceptions per day; most teams have backlogs.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Revenue Transaction (from billing system), Contract (from contract management), Customer (from CRM), Cost Center, Accounting Period. Decision nodes: Revenue Exception with decision_type = revenue_exception, linked to the specific transaction, the applicable GAAP/IFRS policy version, the precedent exceptions cited, and the controller who approved. ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) definition conflict traces record when the same revenue was classified differently under different definitions and how the conflict was resolved.

The agent workflow. On exception trigger: (1) retrieve the transaction details and the relevant contract from the enterprise knowledge graph; (2) query the context graph for previous exceptions for the same contract, the same customer, and the same exception category; (3) retrieve the current accounting policy version; (4) generate a draft exception treatment recommendation with precedent citations; (5) route to controller for review (Level 2 autonomy); (6) write the decision trace on approval. After 500 validated approvals at > 96% validation rate, promote to Level 3 auto-approval for categories with strong precedent coverage.

The ARR definition conflict is a special sub-case where two valid interpretations of the ARR definition produce different numbers for the same revenue stream. Context graph decision traces capture how each conflicting interpretation was resolved, making future interpretations consistent and auditable.

Sales: Engagement History and Playbook Precedents

The problem. Enterprise sales cycles involve dozens of interactions over months or years: discovery calls, proposals, pricing negotiations, objection handling, competitive comparisons, executive engagement, and legal reviews. When an account changes hands between reps (attrition, territory reorganization, expansion of the account team), the institutional knowledge accumulated by the previous rep is mostly lost. The new rep starts from scratch, re-learning context that the account team had already established and repeating conversations that the customer finds annoying.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Account (customer), Contact (customer stakeholders), Opportunity (specific sales engagement), Competitor (competing products evaluated), Product Line (what is being sold). Decision nodes: Sales Engagement decisions with decision_type = sales_engagement — recording specific interactions, objections raised and how they were handled, concessions made and the justification, pricing adjustments and the precedents cited. Sales Playbook Precedents are decision traces that capture the specific plays that worked for similar accounts in similar stages.

The account history graph extends the entity graph with a timeline of key relationship events: first contact, initial demo, proposal submission, competitive bake-off, contract negotiation milestones, renewal history, and expansion decisions. This history is queryable by any agent or new rep joining the account.

The agent workflow. Before each customer interaction: retrieve the account history graph, retrieve the most recent engagement decision traces, retrieve playbook precedents from similar accounts (matching on industry, size, stage). Generate a briefing with: key relationship history, open items from last interaction, recommended approach based on precedents. After each interaction: capture the interaction summary, the objections raised and how they were handled, and the agreed next steps as a decision trace. This creates a continuous, searchable account intelligence record.

The escalation logic for sales is the pattern of how opportunities are routed from standard account management to executive engagement. Context graph traces of past escalation decisions surface the signals that most reliably predict when executive involvement changes outcome — enabling more targeted escalation rather than over-escalating every deal.

Readiness signal. Rep attrition rate > 15% annually, average account handoff time > 3 weeks, deal cycle > 6 months, deal size > $100K.

Engineering: Incident Response and Production Decisions

The problem. Engineering teams make dozens of consequential decisions per incident: which alert to escalate, which service to roll back, which query to kill, which team to page. These decisions are made under time pressure by whoever is on call, often without visibility into what decisions were made in previous similar incidents or why. Incident retrospectives capture some of this knowledge, but they are produced days later, are unevenly documented, and are rarely searched before the next incident.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Service (microservice or system component), Deployment (specific version deployed), Alert (monitoring alarm), Engineer (on-call actor). Decision nodes: Production Decision Record with decision_type = incident_response — recording each significant decision during an incident: the triggering alert, the action taken, the reasoning, the engineer who made the call, and the outcome. Linked to the service graph and the deployment history so that "which version was running when this decision was made?" is always answerable.

The agent workflow. On alert fire: (1) retrieve the service graph for the alerting service and its dependencies; (2) retrieve recent deployment history for the service; (3) query the context graph for previous incidents with similar alert signatures; (4) retrieve the resolution decision traces from the most similar previous incidents; (5) generate an incident briefing: "Similar to Incident-447 (2025-03-14), where [service X] was rolled back to version [Y] resolving within 12 minutes. Recommend same action." Route to on-call engineer with recommended action pre-filled. (6) On action taken, write the decision trace immediately.

The production decision record is particularly valuable for post-incident analysis: every decision during the incident is already a queryable node in the context graph, eliminating the need to reconstruct the timeline from memory. The incident retro can begin with a generated timeline from the context graph rather than from engineer recall.

Readiness signal. Mean time to resolve > 45 minutes, repeat incident rate > 20%, on-call engineer knowledge turnover > 25% annually.

The problem. Automated decisions — pricing, credit, claims, content moderation — are increasingly subject to regulatory requirements for explainability, audit trails, and non-discrimination evidence. Regulations in financial services, healthcare, insurance, and employment require that any automated decision affecting an individual be explainable, traceable, and auditable by regulators. Most AI systems cannot meet this bar — they make decisions but do not maintain queryable records of what information they used, what rules they applied, or what precedents they considered.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Individual (the person affected), Decision (the automated decision), Regulatory Standard (the applicable regulation and version), Auditor (the regulatory body). Decision nodes: Regulatory Audit Automation traces record: for each automated decision, the full decision context (input features, model version, policy version, threshold applied), the precedents for similar cases, and any human review events (whether the decision was reviewed and what the reviewer concluded).

The agent workflow. The regulatory audit agent receives an audit request for a specific automated decision. It: (1) retrieves the decision trace from the context graph; (2) traverses the trace to retrieve the policy version in effect at decision time, the precedents cited, and any review events; (3) generates an audit response document with: the decision inputs, the decision rationale, the policy basis, the precedent comparison, and the human review record; (4) formats the response according to the specific regulatory reporting schema (NIEM or a domain-specific equivalent).

The context graph enables regulatory audit automation because the information required for the audit response is already structured and queryable — it does not need to be reconstructed from logs and emails. The audit agent can generate a compliance-ready response in minutes rather than the days typically required for manual audit preparation.

Financial services compliance extends this pattern to the specific regulatory requirements of banking and insurance: Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) adverse action notices, Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) non-discrimination evidence, and Dodd-Frank stress testing documentation. Each has specific record-keeping requirements that map directly to context graph decision trace fields.

Readiness signal. Regulatory inquiry response time > 5 days, manual audit preparation cost > $50,000 per audit cycle, automated decision volume > 10,000 per month.

Customer Success: Account History and Escalation Logic

The problem. Customer success teams manage complex, multi-year relationships with enterprise customers. The same questions arise repeatedly: should we escalate this support case to the executive sponsor, should we offer a proactive concession to avoid churn, should we expand into a new use case given the customer's current adoption pattern? Experienced CSMs answer these questions by drawing on years of account-specific context and pattern recognition across their portfolio. Junior CSMs answer them by escalating everything or guessing.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Account (customer), Executive Sponsor, CSM (customer success manager), Product (what the customer uses), Health Score (a time-series of account health metrics), Support Case. The account history graph is a rich context graph subgraph representing the full relationship timeline: onboarding milestones, expansion decisions, escalations, renewals, and churn-risk events. Escalation logic traces record each time an account was escalated to executive engagement: the triggering signal, the precedent accounts used to calibrate the response, the action taken, and the outcome.

The agent workflow. On health score alert (score drops below threshold): (1) retrieve the account history graph; (2) query the context graph for escalation decisions for similar accounts (matching industry, size, product usage pattern, stage in lifecycle); (3) retrieve the outcomes of those escalation decisions; (4) generate a recommended response: "Based on 12 similar accounts in the 60-90 day post-implementation risk window, accounts that received an executive check-in and a structured adoption review resolved within 45 days in 78% of cases. Recommend same for this account." (5) Route to CSM with recommendation and precedent citations for human confirmation.

Readiness signal. Churn rate > 8% annually, CSM portfolio size > 20 accounts, average relationship age > 18 months, renewal rate below industry benchmark.

Procurement: Vendor Selection and Contract Exceptions

The problem. Procurement decisions — vendor selection, contract term negotiations, exception approvals for off-contract purchases — are high-value, highly repeatable, and highly context-dependent. The same vendors appear repeatedly; the same contract clauses are negotiated repeatedly; the same exception patterns recur. Yet most organizations make each procurement decision largely from scratch because the precedent record is scattered across email threads, contract management systems, and individual buyer memory.

The context graph. Entity nodes: Vendor, Contract, Purchase Order, Spend Category, Buyer. Decision nodes: Procurement decision traces for vendor selection (why this vendor was chosen over alternatives), contract exceptions (why specific terms were deviated from the standard), and off-contract approvals (why an off-contract purchase was approved). These traces stitch together into a rich vendor relationship history that buyers can query before any new negotiation.

The supply chain use case extends procurement context graphs to cover supplier risk decisions: when a supplier is identified as at-risk (financial distress, concentration risk, regulatory investigation), the context graph provides the full history of past risk events with the same supplier, the contingency decisions made in previous risk events, and the alternative supplier relationships that can be activated.

Readiness signal. Off-contract spend > 15% of total procurement, contract cycle time > 45 days, supplier risk events > 10 per year.

Healthcare: Clinical Workflow Decision Support

The problem. Clinical decision-making involves synthesizing patient history, current test results, applicable clinical guidelines, and institutional protocols for each specific patient encounter. Electronic health record (EHR) systems store patient history but are not optimized for surfacing relevant precedents from similar patients or for linking clinical decisions to the specific guideline versions that governed them.

The context graph. Entity nodes use UMLS concept identifiers (Chapter 6) for diagnoses, medications, procedures, and anatomical structures, ensuring interoperability with other clinical systems. Decision nodes: Clinical Decision Records capture treatment decisions, medication change decisions, escalation decisions, and discharge planning decisions — each linked to the applicable clinical guidelines (by version) and to precedent decisions from similar patient cases (matched on diagnosis cluster, risk profile, and treatment stage).

The healthcare workflow agent retrieves: the patient's decision history (in the context graph), the most similar patient cases and their treatment decisions, and the current applicable clinical guidelines. It generates a decision support summary with evidence from both the institutional precedent base and the clinical literature — a richer context than EHR-native decision support tools provide.

Readiness signal. Physician documentation burden > 3 hours per day, clinical guideline adherence below quality targets, readmission rate above benchmark.

Cross-Department Use Cases

Many of the most valuable context graph applications span multiple departments — cases where the decision requires information from multiple systems and where the decision affects entities in multiple domains.

IT operations context graphs record infrastructure configuration decisions: which change requests were approved, under what change management policy, with what rollback plan, and with what outcome. Linked to the incident response graph, this creates a queryable record of how infrastructure changes relate to system instability — enabling correlation queries like "what changes were made in the 48 hours before this incident, by whom, and have similar changes caused issues before?"

HR workflow automation uses context graphs for compensation exception decisions, promotion decisions, and performance management. Compensation exceptions (salaries approved above band, one-time payments) are particularly important because they create precedents that future employees or managers may try to use as leverage. A context graph with comprehensive compensation exception history enables consistent treatment across the workforce.

Manufacturing quality context graphs record production deviation decisions: when a batch is produced outside specification, the disposition decision (rework, release with concession, scrap), the quality engineer who approved it, the customer notification decision, and the corrective action taken. These records enable pattern detection across production runs — identifying which process parameters are most predictive of defect rates.

Insurance claims context graphs record claims decision traces: coverage determination, reserve setting, payment authorization, subrogation decisions. In an industry with strict regulatory requirements and significant litigation risk, having a complete, queryable record of every claims decision — including the precedents cited and the policy version applied — is not just operationally valuable; it is a legal necessity.
