The Essay Architecture Explorer¶
How to Use This MicroSim¶
Click any node in the essay diagram — Introduction, Body Paragraphs, Counterclaim Paragraph, or Conclusion — to expand it and see its internal components with definitions and example sentences. Use the "Switch Essay Topic" dropdown to view the same structure applied to different high school topics (standardized testing, uniform policy, social media regulation). When you are ready to apply the structure yourself, click "Build My Essay" and fill in your thesis, body claims, counterclaim, and conclusion synthesis; the tool generates a downloadable visual outline.
Learning Objective¶
Apply (L3 — Apply) the structural conventions of argumentative essays by identifying and labeling the components of a sample essay and by assembling the components of an original essay structure.
Specification¶
The full specification below is extracted from Chapter 10: Writing Modes and Essay Development.
Type: Interactive Diagram
**sim-id:** essay-architecture-explorer
**Library:** vis-network
**Status:** Specified
**Learning Objective:** Apply (L3 — Apply) the structural conventions of argumentative essays by identifying and labeling the components of a sample essay and by assembling the components of an original essay structure.
**Description:** A node-and-edge diagram displaying the hierarchical structure of a five-paragraph argumentative essay. Six major nodes: Introduction (top), Body Paragraph 1, Body Paragraph 2, Body Paragraph 3, Counterclaim Paragraph, Conclusion (bottom). Each node has child nodes showing its internal structure: Introduction → Hook, Context, Thesis; each Body Paragraph → Topic Sentence, Evidence, Analysis, Link; Counterclaim → Acknowledge, Concede, Rebut; Conclusion → Synthesis, So What?, Significance.
**Interactions:**
- Clicking any node expands it to show its sub-components with brief definitions and a color-coded example sentence from a sample essay on a high school topic (the standardized testing debate, by default).
- A "Switch Essay Topic" dropdown changes the example sentences to a different topic (uniform policy; social media regulation; summer reading requirement) while keeping the structure constant.
- A "Build My Essay" mode provides a guided form: the user fills in their own thesis, three body claims, counterclaim, and conclusion synthesis. When complete, the diagram assembles these into a color-coded visual structure and generates a downloadable outline.
**Canvas:** Responsive, minimum 600px wide, minimum 500px height. Vertical scroll on small screens.
