Grade 5 Chapters

This section contains the 7 chapters of the Grade 5 Health Education band. Each chapter builds on concepts introduced in earlier chapters, so the chapters are best read in order the first time through — but once you've completed the band, feel free to jump directly to whichever chapter you need to review. Every chapter opens with a short summary and a list of the concepts it covers, and closes with a link back to the earlier chapters it depends on, so you can always trace an idea back to where it was first introduced.

  1. Foundations And Trusted Adults — Introduces health itself, how family and peers shape decisions and emotions, and how to identify and tell a trusted adult about a health concern.
  2. Food And Nutrition — Compares cultural approaches to nutrition, teaches label reading and water choice, and covers meal planning and foodborne illness prevention.
  3. Managing Emotions And Relationships — Builds restorative self-management strategies and skills for supporting peers while respecting boundaries and recognizing emotional triggers.
  4. Equity, Belonging, And Bystander Action — Explores equity, belonging, and ability-inclusive kindness alongside bystander strategies for preventing bullying and violence.
  5. Personal Health And Wellness — Covers sleep, fitness components, allergic reactions, chronic conditions, and how personal behaviors shape long-term health.
  6. Personal Safety And Violence Prevention — Addresses technology and social media harm, unhealthy relationships, consent versus coercion, and emergency risk reduction.
  7. Health Skills And Goal Setting — Ties together conflict resolution, boundary-setting, decision reflection, goal tracking, and delivering a health message.

How To Use This Textbook

Read each chapter's Summary and Concepts Covered list before diving into the content so you know what to expect. If a term or idea feels unfamiliar, check the Prerequisites section at the bottom of the chapter — it links directly to the earlier chapter where that concept was first taught. Diagrams, MicroSims, and practice questions throughout each chapter are meant to be explored interactively, not just read, so take the time to click, test, and experiment as you go.
