Bloom Taxonomy: Understand (L2)
Bloom Taxonomy Verb: describe, exemplify, compare
Learning objective: Students describe several different kinds of uniqueness among classmates and explain how valuing each one strengthens caring relationships and belonging.
Purpose: Show a warm, respectful gallery of eight diverse classroom characters, each with a unique trait, ability, family type, or interest, helping students see the many valid ways people can be different
Layout: A friendly grid of eight illustrated classroom characters arranged around a shared center label reading "Our Class Is Full of One-of-a-Kind People"
Characters to show (each with one notable, respectfully depicted trait):
- A student who uses a wheelchair and loves basketball
- A student who speaks two languages at home
- A student raised by grandparents
- A student who wears hearing aids and loves music
- A student with curly red hair who loves painting
- A student from a blended family who loves cooking with both households
- A student who is quiet and loves reading alone at recess
- A student who uses glasses and loves stargazing
Interactive elements:
- Hover or click each character to reveal a short, warm caption naming their unique trait and one thing they love
- A second click reveals: "What makes [name] a great friend to have?" with one caring-relationship example
- No character is marked as more or less "normal" than another; captions use equally warm, matter-of-fact language for each
Visual style: Bright, friendly flat-style illustrations; diverse skin tones, abilities, family structures, and interests shown matter-of-factly, without singling any character out as different in a negative sense
Color scheme: Each character highlighted in its own soft accent color when selected; shared warm neutral background
Implementation: p5.js with click regions mapped to two-stage caption reveals; alternatively HTML/CSS grid with JavaScript hover/click handlers
