About This MicroSim
This infographic lays PowerShell and WSL side by side across eight factors that matter when an AI agent is doing the automating — installation, compatibility with AI-generated commands, package managers, file paths, access to Windows-native features, filesystem speed, error rate, and a real-world test: publishing this book with mkdocs gh-deploy.
The PowerShell column is topped with a console icon in PowerShell's signature blue. The WSL column is topped with Tux, the Linux mascot — a visual reminder that WSL is giving you a real Linux environment, not a Windows shell in disguise.
Every highlighted cell (marked with a small i) hides a detailed infobox. Prerequisites
Basic familiarity with a command-line shell (either PowerShell or bash).
Activities
- Exploration (3 min): Read across each row, hovering the highlighted cells to compare PowerShell and WSL for that factor.
- Guided Practice (3 min): Before hovering the "Error Rate with AI-Generated Commands" row, ask students to predict which shell wins and why — then reveal the example and discuss.
- Assessment (2-4 min): Have students identify one factor where PowerShell is clearly the better choice, and explain why WSL is still the better default for everyday AI-agent automation.
Assessment
Students should be able to explain, in their own words, why most AI-agent tooling assumes a POSIX shell, and name at least one task where PowerShell's Windows-native access makes it the right tool instead.
