Thinking requires the mind to represent the world internally — to build mental stand-ins for objects, people, events, and abstract ideas. Two of the most fundamental building blocks of mental representation are concepts and prototypes.
Concepts and Prototypes¶
A concept is a mental category that groups together objects, events, or ideas that share common features. Concepts allow us to organize experience efficiently: instead of treating every individual dog as a new and unique entity, the concept "dog" lets us apply everything we know about dogs to any new dog we encounter. Concepts range from concrete (chair, rain, triangle) to abstract (justice, love, infinity).
Within any concept, some members feel more representative than others. A prototype is the most typical or average example of a concept — a kind of mental benchmark. For the concept "bird," a robin or a sparrow likely serves as your prototype; an ostrich or a penguin is a bird too, but feels like a worse example because it deviates from the prototype. Prototype matching is fast and automatic: when you encounter a new object, you unconsciously compare it to your prototypes to classify it. This is why we can recognize novel instances of familiar categories almost instantly.
Concepts are not isolated but organized hierarchically. The basic level (e.g., "dog") is the most natural entry point — specific enough to be informative, general enough to be broadly useful. The superordinate level (e.g., "animal") is more general; the subordinate level (e.g., "Labrador Retriever") is more specific. Prototype effects are strongest at the basic level.
Assimilation and Accommodation¶
Jean Piaget described two processes by which mental representations change as we encounter new information. Assimilation occurs when new information is interpreted through existing mental frameworks (schemas) without changing those frameworks. If a child who knows "dog" sees a cat for the first time and calls it a dog, they are assimilating the cat into their existing dog concept.
Accommodation occurs when new information cannot be fitted into existing schemas, so the schema itself is modified or a new schema is created. When the child learns that the four-legged creature is actually a cat — a different kind of animal — they accommodate by creating a new concept or revising their existing one. Cognitive development, in Piaget's view, is the ongoing interplay between assimilation and accommodation as mental structures grow more complex and accurate. On the AP exam, remember: assimilation = fit new info into old schema; accommodation = change the schema to fit new info.

5.2 Problem-Solving: From Algorithms to Insight¶
Every time you figure out a math problem, navigate a new city, or decide what to make for dinner, you are solving a problem. Cognitive psychologists study these processes to understand both how effective thinking works and why it sometimes fails.
Algorithms¶
An algorithm is a step-by-step procedure that, if followed correctly, guarantees a correct solution. Long division is an algorithm: follow the steps precisely and you will always get the right answer. Algorithms are reliable but can be slow — particularly when the problem space is large. Searching every possible combination of letters to unscramble a word is an algorithmic approach; for a five-letter word, that means checking up to 120 combinations. For a ten-letter word, the number swells to over 3.6 million. Computers excel at algorithmic problem-solving; human brains generally do not, because we lack the working memory and processing speed to execute exhaustive searches efficiently.
Heuristics¶
Because algorithms are often too slow, the brain relies heavily on heuristics — mental shortcuts or rules of thumb that allow us to reach quick, good-enough solutions without exhaustive analysis. Heuristics sacrifice guaranteed correctness for speed and efficiency. When you estimate that a restaurant is good because it is busy, you are using the heuristic "popularity signals quality." Heuristics work well in most everyday situations but can lead to systematic errors — called cognitive biases — when the shortcuts misfire.
Two heuristics are especially important for the AP exam. The representativeness heuristic involves judging the probability of an event by how closely it resembles a prototype or typical case. If someone is described as shy, neat, and detail-oriented, you might judge it more likely that they are a librarian than a salesperson — even though salespeople vastly outnumber librarians in the population. You are matching the description to your librarian prototype and ignoring the base rate (how common each profession actually is).
The availability heuristic involves judging the probability of an event based on how easily examples come to mind. After watching news coverage of plane crashes, people overestimate the danger of flying — vivid, emotionally charged examples are highly available in memory, inflating perceived risk. Conversely, we underestimate risks that receive little media coverage (e.g., drowning in a bathtub) even when they are statistically more common than the sensationalized events.
Mental Set and Functional Fixedness¶
Successful problem-solving also requires knowing when not to apply familiar approaches. A mental set is the tendency to approach a new problem using a strategy that worked for a previous problem — even when that strategy is suboptimal or completely inapplicable. Mental set is essentially cognitive habit: the brain reaches for its most practiced tool first. In Luchins' classic water-jar experiments, participants who had practiced solving problems using a three-jar formula persistently used the complex formula on simpler problems where a one-step solution was available, simply because the formula had worked before.
Functional fixedness is a closely related phenomenon: the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their conventional functions, which prevents seeing them as tools for novel problems. In Duncker's candle problem, participants are given a candle, a book of matches, and a box of thumbtacks and asked to mount the candle on the wall so it can burn without dripping on the floor. Most people fail to see that the thumbtack box itself can be tacked to the wall and used as a candle holder — they perceive the box only as a container, not as a potential platform. Recognizing an object's affordances (possible uses) beyond its typical function is key to overcoming functional fixedness.
Executive Functions¶
The set of higher-order cognitive processes that regulate and coordinate thinking is called executive functions. These are primarily associated with the prefrontal cortex and include working memory (holding information in mind while using it), cognitive flexibility (shifting between mental strategies), inhibitory control (suppressing automatic responses), planning, and goal-directed behavior. Executive functions are the "CEO" of the brain — they do not perform the basic cognitive operations themselves but direct and coordinate them. Deficits in executive function underlie many developmental and psychiatric conditions, including ADHD, schizophrenia, and the effects of frontal lobe damage.
Creativity and Divergent Thinking¶
Overcoming mental set and functional fixedness requires creativity — the ability to produce ideas that are both novel and appropriate or useful. Psychologists distinguish two modes of thinking. Convergent thinking narrows down multiple possibilities to find a single correct answer (as in most academic tests). Divergent thinking expands outward, generating many possible solutions to an open-ended problem. Creativity requires divergent thinking, but divergent thinking alone is not sufficient — truly creative output also requires evaluation, selection, and execution of ideas.
J.P. Guilford, who pioneered the study of divergent thinking, used tests of fluency (how many ideas you can generate), flexibility (how many different categories your ideas span), and originality (how unusual your ideas are). Research suggests that creativity is not a single unitary trait but a family of related skills influenced by personality openness, domain knowledge, intrinsic motivation, and the social environment.

5.3 Judgment and Decision-Making: The Heuristics That Lead Us Astray¶
Thinking is not just about solving well-defined problems with clear correct answers. Most of life's important decisions — whom to trust, what risks to take, how to interpret ambiguous information — involve judgment under uncertainty. Cognitive psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky showed in landmark research that human judgment is systematically biased in predictable directions. These biases are not random errors — they are the predictable misapplications of otherwise useful heuristics.
Cognitive Biases Overview¶
Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from rationality in judgment, arising from the brain's reliance on heuristics and mental shortcuts. They are "bugs" that emerge from features: the same mental shortcuts that allow fast, efficient thinking under normal conditions produce predictable errors in specific contexts. More than 180 distinct cognitive biases have been catalogued, but the AP exam focuses on a core set.
The Framing Effect¶
The framing effect occurs when the same information leads to different decisions depending on how it is presented. If a medical treatment is described as having a "90% survival rate," patients are more likely to choose it than if it is described as having a "10% mortality rate" — even though the two statements are logically identical. The framing shifts the reference point from gain (surviving) to loss (dying), triggering different emotional responses. Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman demonstrated that people are loss averse — losses feel roughly twice as painful as equivalent gains feel pleasurable — and framing exploits this asymmetry. Advertisers, politicians, and public health communicators routinely use framing to influence choices.
The Gambler's Fallacy¶
The gambler's fallacy is the belief that a random event is more or less likely based on the outcomes of recent independent events. If a fair coin lands heads ten times in a row, many people feel strongly that tails is "due." In reality, the coin has no memory — the probability of heads on the eleventh flip is still exactly 50%. The fallacy arises from the representativeness heuristic: we expect short sequences of coin flips to look representative of a 50/50 distribution, so a streak feels like it must be "corrected." The fallacy is particularly dangerous in gambling (hence the name) and in any domain involving streaks of independent events.
The Sunk-Cost Fallacy¶
The sunk-cost fallacy is the tendency to continue investing in a course of action because of previously invested resources (time, money, effort), even when continuing is no longer rational. "I already paid for the concert ticket, so I'll go even though I feel sick" is a classic example. Economically, a sunk cost is gone regardless of future action and should not influence future decisions — only future costs and benefits should matter. But psychologically, the pain of "wasting" past investments keeps people in failing relationships, bad movies, losing wars, and unprofitable businesses. Like the framing effect, the sunk-cost fallacy is partly driven by loss aversion: cutting losses means admitting and experiencing a loss.

5.4 Intelligence: Measuring the Mind¶
Few topics in psychology are as contested — and as consequential — as intelligence. What is it? Can a single number capture it? Is it one thing or many? Does it change over time? Psychologists have wrestled with these questions for over a century.
Intelligence and the g Factor¶
Intelligence is broadly defined as the capacity to learn from experience, solve problems, and adapt to the environment. Early psychologists noticed that people who score well on one type of cognitive test (e.g., verbal reasoning) tend to score well on others (e.g., spatial reasoning, memory). This positive correlation among diverse cognitive tasks suggested that a single underlying factor drives performance across all of them. Charles Spearman called this factor g (general intelligence) and proposed that all cognitive abilities share a common general component plus specific abilities (called s factors) unique to each task.
The g factor remains one of the most replicated findings in psychological science. Modern factor-analytic studies consistently find that cognitive test scores are positively correlated — a matrix of correlations that can be explained by a general factor. High g is associated with faster neural processing speed, working memory capacity, and the ability to identify abstract patterns. g also predicts real-world outcomes: academic achievement, occupational success, and health-related decisions.
Multiple Intelligences¶
Not everyone is satisfied with g. Howard Gardner argued in 1983 that intelligence is not a single capacity but a set of distinct multiple intelligences, each representing a different way of processing information. Gardner proposed eight (later nine) intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist, and (tentatively) existential. His theory is widely popular in education because it validates diverse forms of talent and challenges the idea that academic tests measure all that matters cognitively.
Critics note that Gardner's intelligences lack strong psychometric support: most of them correlate positively with each other (which looks suspiciously like g) and some (bodily-kinesthetic, musical) look more like talents than cognitive abilities. Robert Sternberg proposed a triarchic theory with three intelligences — analytical, creative, and practical — arguing that the intelligence measured by IQ tests (analytical) is only one slice of adaptive cognition. Neither Gardner's nor Sternberg's theories has displaced g in research settings, but they have had enormous influence on educational practice and popular culture.
IQ and Mental Age¶
The first practical intelligence test was created by Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon in 1905 for the French Ministry of Education to identify students who needed additional academic support. Binet calculated mental age — the average intellectual performance level corresponding to a particular chronological age. A child who performs at the level of an average 10-year-old has a mental age of 10, regardless of their actual age.
William Stern introduced the intelligence quotient (IQ): Mental Age ÷ Chronological Age × 100. A 10-year-old with a mental age of 10 has an IQ of 100 (10/10 × 100). A 10-year-old with a mental age of 12 has an IQ of 120. This ratio formula worked reasonably well for children but broke down for adults (mental age plateaus but chronological age keeps rising). Modern IQ scores are deviation IQs: your score is calculated by comparing your performance to a large normative sample of people your age, with the distribution set to a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. An IQ of 115 means you scored one standard deviation above your age group's mean.
The IQ distribution follows a roughly normal (bell-shaped) curve in the population. About 68% of people score between 85 and 115 (within one SD of the mean). About 95% score between 70 and 130. Scores below 70 (two SDs below mean) define the range traditionally associated with intellectual disability; scores above 130 (two SDs above mean) are sometimes used to identify giftedness.

The Flynn Effect¶
One of the most striking discoveries in intelligence research is the Flynn Effect: the observation that average IQ scores have risen substantially in most countries over the 20th century — roughly 3 points per decade, or about 30 points over a century. Named for political scientist James Flynn who documented the trend, the Flynn Effect means that if people from 1920 took today's IQ test, the average score would be around 70, which today would be considered two standard deviations below the mean. Conversely, if today's population took the 1920 test without renorming, the average would be around 130.
The causes of the Flynn Effect remain debated, but leading explanations include improved nutrition (especially in early childhood), reduced childhood disease burden, increased years of formal education, more cognitively complex environments (video games, abstract reasoning demands of modern life), and reduced exposure to environmental toxins like lead. Importantly, recent data suggest the Flynn Effect has plateaued or reversed in several developed nations since roughly the 1990s, possibly reflecting diminishing returns on environmental improvements. 5.5 Measuring Intelligence: Tests, Validity, and the Science of Assessment¶
How do we know whether a test actually measures what it claims to measure? The science of psychological measurement — psychometrics — provides tools to evaluate tests rigorously.
Standardized Testing¶
A standardized test is one administered, scored, and interpreted according to uniform procedures for all test-takers. Standardization ensures that a score means the same thing regardless of who administered the test or when and where it was taken. Standardized tests are normed on a large, representative sample of the target population; individual scores are then interpreted relative to this normative distribution. The SAT, ACT, most IQ tests, and state achievement exams are all standardized tests. Standardization is the precondition for meaningful score comparisons across individuals.
Test Reliability¶
Reliability refers to the consistency of a test — the degree to which it produces the same results under the same conditions across time, raters, or versions. A reliable bathroom scale gives you the same weight every morning (assuming you haven't changed). An unreliable psychological test is one where your score fluctuates dramatically from one administration to the next for no good reason.
Several types of reliability matter in psychology. Test-retest reliability measures consistency across time: does the test produce similar scores if taken again weeks later? Inter-rater reliability measures consistency across scorers: do two independent scorers agree on the score? Split-half reliability assesses internal consistency: do scores on the first half of the test correlate with scores on the second half? A test can be reliable without being valid — a scale can give you the exact same wrong weight every time — but a test cannot be valid without being reliable (a randomly fluctuating test cannot accurately measure anything).
Test Validity¶
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. A test is valid if the scores actually reflect the psychological construct of interest. There are several types of validity. Content validity asks whether the test covers a representative sample of the domain being measured — an arithmetic test that only includes addition problems lacks content validity for "arithmetic." Criterion validity asks whether test scores predict a relevant outcome (criterion): does an IQ test predict academic performance? Does a measure of depression predict hospitalization rates? When the criterion is measured at the same time as the test, it is called concurrent validity; when the criterion is measured in the future, it is predictive validity. Construct validity is the broadest — it asks whether the test measures the theoretical construct it claims to measure, evaluated across multiple lines of converging evidence.
The reliability-validity relationship is important: high reliability is necessary but not sufficient for validity. The formula is often expressed: a test can be reliable but not valid; it cannot be valid but not reliable.
Achievement vs. Aptitude Tests¶
Two broad categories of standardized tests serve different purposes. An achievement test measures what someone has already learned — knowledge and skills acquired through education and experience. End-of-course exams, AP exams, and state reading assessments are achievement tests: they assess the product of prior learning.
An aptitude test is designed to predict future performance or potential — what someone is likely to be able to do with appropriate training or opportunity. The SAT was originally conceived as an aptitude test (the "A" stood for "Aptitude" before the acronym was officially retired). The distinction between achievement and aptitude is blurrier in practice than in theory: what we are currently able to do depends heavily on what we have already learned. Critics argue that tests marketed as aptitude tests (including the SAT) actually measure achievement — primarily the academic skills emphasized in well-resourced schools.

Schemas and accommodation/assimilation describe how those representations change with experience. Problem-solving draws on both systematic algorithms and fast-but-fallible heuristics, and can be blocked by mental set and functional fixedness — obstacles overcome through creativity and divergent thinking. The same heuristics that power problem-solving generate the systematic biases in judgment — representativeness, availability, framing, gambler's fallacy, and sunk-cost — that Kahneman and Tversky mapped so precisely.
Intelligence sits at the intersection of all these processes: it is the aggregate capacity to learn, adapt, and apply cognitive resources effectively. Whether it is best understood as a single g factor, as multiple independent intelligences, or as a triarchic set of analytical, creative, and practical abilities is a live scientific debate — but all three perspectives agree that intelligence is influenced by both biology and environment, as the Flynn Effect dramatically confirms.
Measuring any of these constructs requires tests that are standardized, reliable, and valid. Understanding the difference between achievement and aptitude, and between content, criterion, and construct validity, is essential both for interpreting psychological research and for critically evaluating the tests that shape educational and career trajectories.
