About This MicroSim
This split-screen simulation places monoculture and polyculture farming systems side by side so students can directly observe how crop diversity affects ecological resilience. The left panel shows a monoculture field with a grid of identical crop plants, while the right panel shows a polyculture field with three to four different crop types randomly distributed. Both fields experience identical stress events triggered by buttons.
Three types of stress events reveal the differences: pest outbreaks spread faster through monoculture because identical hosts are adjacent, droughts affect monoculture more severely because polyculture retains soil moisture through ground cover diversity, and after multiple seasons nutrient depletion causes monoculture yields to decline while polyculture remains stable. A season counter and yield tracker for both systems let students quantify these differences over time.
Bar charts below the fields display cumulative yield, pesticide use, and soil health scores, making the long-term consequences of each system visible. The "Run 10 Seasons" button provides a time-lapse comparison that dramatically illustrates how small per-season differences compound into large cumulative effects.
How to Use
- Observe the two fields: monoculture (left, identical green plants) and polyculture (right, mixed colored plants).
- Click Pest Outbreak to release pests into both fields. Watch how quickly they spread in each system.
- Click Drought to trigger a drought event and compare how each system responds.
