Grade 1 Health Education — Chapters¶
This section contains 7 chapters that build on each other in order. Each chapter introduces a small set of related ideas and assumes students have already read the chapters before it. Teachers and families can read a chapter aloud together, talk through the pictures and examples, and revisit the "Concepts Covered" list at the end to check understanding before moving on to the next chapter.
- Foundations of Health and Safe Habits — Introduces health and the core ideas of trusted adults, permission, safe behavior, influence, and communication that every later chapter builds on.
- Food, Drinks, and Staying Safe in the Kitchen — Explores food groups, drink choices, why breakfast matters, and safe food storage and preparation.
- Understanding and Talking About Feelings — Helps students name feelings, talk about them, and notice how situations and struggles affect emotions.
- Friendship, Uniqueness, and Belonging — Looks at healthy peer relationships, valuing uniqueness, kindness, and belonging.
- Healthy Habits, Activity, and Germs — Covers hygiene, personal care, physical activity, and how germs spread and can be prevented.
- Staying Safe at Home, School, and Online — Teaches safe technology use, telling safe from unsafe behavior, emergency drills, body safety, and asking a trusted adult for help.
- Getting Help and Making Healthy Choices — Brings together influence, communication, and help-seeking skills to support making and tracking healthy decisions.
How to Use This Textbook¶
Read the chapters in order, since each one uses ideas from the chapters before it. Start with the Summary to see what the chapter is about, then review the Concepts Covered list together, using the pictures and read-aloud text to talk through new words. There is no need to memorize definitions — the goal is for students to recognize each idea, explain it in their own words, and, where noted, practice it (like saying "no" to an unwanted touch) with the support of a trusted adult or teacher.
