Summary¶
This chapter introduces the overall idea of health as a foundation for everything else in the course. Students learn who and what can influence their health choices, and begin to ask whether health information, products, and services are trustworthy.

Prerequisites¶
This is the first chapter in the Grade 3 course. It assumes only the bridging concepts described in the course description, including familiarity with food groups, relationships, emotions, hygiene, safety rules, and goal-setting from earlier grades.

What Is Health?¶
Health means how well a person's body and mind are working and feeling. It is bigger than just "not being sick." A healthy third grader eats food that helps them grow, moves their body every day, gets enough sleep, stays safe, and has ways to notice and share their feelings. Health also includes the people around a student — family, friends, and community — because no one builds healthy habits completely alone.
This year, students start asking a new kind of question: not just "What is healthy?" but "Is this actually true, and can I trust where it came from?" That second question is just as important as the first, and this chapter builds toward it step by step.
Think about a typical day. A student decides what to eat for breakfast, how to spend recess, whether to wear a jacket, and who to ask when they feel confused about something. Every one of those small decisions is a health behavior — an action that affects a person's physical, mental, or emotional well-being. This chapter looks closely at what shapes those everyday decisions.
Big Idea
Health is more than your body feeling fine. It's your body, your mind, your habits, and the people and messages around you — all working together.
Here are a few everyday examples that show how wide the idea of health really is:
- Choosing water instead of a sugary drink before soccer practice.
- Asking a trusted adult for help when a problem feels too big to solve alone.
- Noticing that a friend copied their homework habits after watching an older sibling study.
- Deciding whether a claim on a cereal box ("Gives you superpowers!") could possibly be true.
Who and What Influences Health Behavior¶
No student makes health decisions in a bubble. Influences on health behavior are the people, places, and messages that shape the choices a person makes about their health — for better or for worse. Learning to notice these influences is the first step toward making thoughtful choices instead of automatic ones.
Common influences on a third grader's health behavior include:
- Family — the habits, rules, and traditions a student grows up with, like meal routines or bedtime.
- Friends and peers — what classmates eat, say, or do can make a habit feel normal or unusual.
- School — teachers, cafeteria menus, recess rules, and posters all send health messages.
- Community — coaches, neighbors, faith or cultural leaders, and local traditions.
- Media and advertising — commercials, packaging, apps, and shows that promote products or behaviors.
- Culture — a family or community's shared traditions around food, movement, and care.
Some influences push a student toward healthier choices, and some push away from them — and often the very same influence can do both at different times. A coach might encourage practice and rest equally; an advertisement might promote an exciting toy but also a sugary snack.

Helpful Tip
When something influences your health choice, ask yourself: "Is this helping my body and mind, or just grabbing my attention?" Naming the influence out loud makes it much easier to decide.
Starting to Question What We Hear¶
Every day, students hear health claims from many sources: a doctor, a teacher, a commercial, a game app, a rumor from a friend, a label on a box. Not all of these claims deserve the same amount of trust. This year, students begin learning two related skills for judging health information: checking its validity and checking its reliability.
Validity of health information means whether a claim is actually true and based on real evidence — not made up, exaggerated, or misleading. A valid claim matches what real experts and real science have found. Reliability of health information means whether the source of the claim can be trusted consistently — because it comes from people with real training, honest intentions, and a track record of getting things right, not just one time, but again and again.
A simple way to picture the difference: validity asks "Is this particular fact true?" while reliability asks "Can I generally trust wherever this fact came from?" A source can even be reliable most of the time and still get one detail wrong — which is why good thinkers check both.
Third graders can start asking three simple questions about any health claim:
- Who said it? A doctor, school nurse, or textbook is a very different source than an unfamiliar website, a stranger, or an advertisement.
- Why did they say it? Is the goal to help people be healthy, or to sell something, get clicks, or just repeat a rumor?
- Does it match what trusted adults and books say? If a claim sounds surprising, it is worth checking with a trusted adult, a doctor, or a reliable book before believing or repeating it.
Not Everything Is True
Some ads and rumors are designed to sound exciting, not to be true. If a health claim seems too good to be true — like a snack that gives "instant superpowers" — it probably is. Always check with a trusted adult, doctor, or book.

Instructional Rationale: Determining the validity and reliability of health information is Grade 3's first genuine Evaluate-level benchmark, so the pattern uses a judgment sorter with a revealed reason rather than passive viewing. Students must actively assess each source and compare it against a simple trusted standard, which matches the Evaluate-level demand of judging and validating.
Implementation notes: Use p5.js. Keep claim cards short and readable aloud. Avoid frightening or shaming language — the goal is confident, curious checking, not fear of every message.
Comparing Validity and Reliability¶
It helps to see validity and reliability side by side, since third graders are just learning that these are two related but different checks.

Notice that a single source, like a favorite book from the library, can be reliable overall while a single claim inside it should still be checked if it sounds surprising. Good health thinkers stay curious and check both the claim and the source — that habit protects them from being fooled by exciting-sounding but false information.
Asking Questions Is a Superpower
Learning to question a health claim is a brand-new skill this year, and it might feel a little strange to "doubt" something at first. That's completely normal — asking good questions is not being rude, it's being smart. You've got this!

Bringing It All Together¶
Health is the big idea this whole book explores: how well a person's body and mind are working, growing, and feeling. This chapter showed that health behaviors don't happen in isolation — family, friends, school, community, media, and culture all shape the choices a student makes every day, sometimes helpfully and sometimes not. Because messages about health come from so many places, students are now ready to ask two connected questions about any health claim: is it valid (actually true), and does it come from a reliable source (one that can be trusted again and again)?
Every later Grade 3 chapter — food, growth and development, mental and emotional health, safety, and community practices — will return to these same ideas: what health means, who influences a health choice, and how to judge whether health information deserves to be trusted.

By the end of this chapter, most Grade 3 students should be able to describe health as covering body, mind, and relationships; name at least two influences on a health behavior and say whether each is generally helpful or unhelpful; and apply a simple three-question check (who said it, why, does it match trusted sources) to judge a health claim's validity and reliability.
