Grade 4 Chapters¶
This section presents the Grade 4 health education content as six chapters, sequenced so that each chapter builds only on concepts introduced earlier. Read them in order the first time through — later chapters (especially Health Literacy and Goal Setting) assume ideas from Food and Nutrition, Growth and Development, and Wellness and Disease Prevention. Each chapter lists the concepts it covers and links to the earlier chapter(s) it depends on, so you can jump back to review a prerequisite if a topic feels unfamiliar.
- Food and Nutrition — Introduces health itself, then the nutrients that fuel the body, nutrition labels, balanced meal planning, hydration, and food safety.
- Growth and Development Across Cultures — Respectful conflict management and puberty as a life stage observed across cultures, including Indigenous communities.
- Mental and Emotional Health — Self-regulation, managing emotions, recognizing bias and prejudice, and responding safely to teasing and bullying.
- Personal Safety and Refusal Skills — Influences on behavior, situational awareness, boundaries, warning signs, peer pressure, and refusal skills.
- Wellness and Disease Prevention — Allergies, cultural physical-activity traditions, and infectious versus non-infectious disease prevention.
- Health Literacy and Goal Setting — Evaluating health information and products, constructing a research-based position, and building a personal health goal plan.
How to Use This Textbook¶
Each chapter page opens with a short summary and a numbered list of the concepts it covers, so you can preview what you'll learn before reading. Work through the chapters in order, since each one lists the earlier chapter(s) its ideas depend on. Diagrams, MicroSims, and practice questions inside each chapter are there to help you actively use the ideas, not just read about them — pause and try them before moving on.
