Infectious Disease¶
Now that you've explored movement and mood, this chapter turns to a different kind of wellness topic: understanding how illness works, starting with the kind that can spread from person to person.
An infectious disease is an illness caused by a germ — such as a virus, bacterium, or fungus — that can spread from one person, animal, or surface to another. Colds, the flu, strep throat, and chickenpox are all examples of infectious diseases. Because these illnesses are caused by living or semi-living organisms that can travel, they are the kind of illness you can "catch" from someone else or give to someone else.
Not every infectious disease spreads the same way or causes the same symptoms, but they share one key trait: a germ is the cause, and that germ can move from one host to another.
