Two kinds of safety, one shared skill

Digital Content Effects On Relationships

By high school, most relationships — friendships, dating relationships, and family relationships — are conducted partly or mostly through screens. Social Media Effects On Boundaries

Two related patterns deserve particular attention because they are common and easy to normalize without realizing it:

  • Surveillance behavior. Checking a partner's phone, messages, or location without permission, demanding passwords, or monitoring who they follow or talk to online are common patterns that can feel like "caring" but function as control. Responding To Online Threats And Harmful Content

Digital relationships sometimes cross a line from uncomfortable into actively harmful, and every student needs a clear, practiced response for that moment. Responding to online threats and harmful content means knowing the correct, effective steps to take when facing harassment, threats, doxxing, or the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, whether the person responsible is a partner, a peer, or a stranger.

This section builds on ideas introduced in earlier grades and extends them for the situations high schoolers are more likely to face directly, including within established relationships. A few forms of online harm are common enough to name specifically:

  • Harassment — repeated unwanted contact, insults, or threats directed at a person online.
  • Doxxing — publishing someone's private information (home address, phone number, workplace) online without consent, usually to intimidate or enable others to harass them.
  • Non-consensual sharing of intimate images — sharing a private image of someone without their permission, sometimes by a stranger, but often by a former partner after a relationship ends (sometimes called "revenge sharing"). This is not a private relationship matter — it is a serious violation with real legal consequences.

The most important fact in this section applies to every situation listed above: the person targeted is never at fault, regardless of how the image or information was originally shared or with whom. Laws in most U.S. states criminalize the non-consensual sharing of intimate images — sometimes called "nonconsensual pornography" laws — and these laws apply to adults as well as minors, meaning the legal protection does not expire at age 18. A person who shared an image within a trusted relationship has not forfeited their right to control where that image goes afterward.

The response sequence is consistent across harassment, doxxing, and image sharing:

Most online harm calls for the reporting sequence just described — but a smaller number of situations rise to the level of a genuine emergency. The distinction matters because treating every uncomfortable online situation as a 911 emergency would make it harder to recognize the situations that truly are one, while under-reacting to a genuine threat can leave someone in danger. A useful way to evaluate a situation is to ask whether it describes a credible, specific threat of violence — naming a person, a location, and some indication of intent or planning — versus behavior that is harmful but does not indicate an imminent risk to physical safety.

This section covers exactly three things, on purpose, because these three things are what genuinely help: recognizing warning signs, reporting them, and knowing standard procedure. Nothing about how a threat could be carried out is useful for prevention, so it is left out entirely.

Recognizing warning signs. Concerning behavior in a peer is almost never a single dramatic event — it is a pattern, often visible to peers well before it is visible to adults. The categories worth knowing are the same categories used by school threat assessment teams nationally:

Reporting the process, every time. The reporting process for a possible school-shooting-related concern is identical to the reporting process for any serious safety concern discussed earlier in this chapter: tell a trusted adult, a staff member, or use an anonymous tip line, immediately and every time, without personally judging whether the concern is "serious enough" to report. A report that turns out to be unfounded costs almost nothing; a warning sign that goes unreported can cost everything. Students who notice something and say something are consistently one of the most important sources of prevention in the research on school violence — not administrators, not security equipment, but peers who chose to tell someone.

Standard drill procedures. Many U.S. schools train students and staff using a framework developed by federal agencies such as CISA and DHS, commonly summarized as "run, hide, fight." At the high school level, it is worth knowing this framework by name and understanding it at a policy level, in this order of priority:

  • Run (evacuate) when there is a safe path away from danger: leave calmly but quickly, following staff direction to a designated safe location, and help others move if it does not put you at greater risk.
  • Hide (lockdown) when leaving is not safe: get out of sight, silence and put away your phone, lock or barricade the door if trained and able to do so, stay quiet, and wait for an official all-clear from law enforcement or the staff member in charge — never from an unverified message or rumor.
  • Fight is named by this framework only as a last resort, used solely when escape and hiding are genuinely not possible. The purpose of practicing lockdown and evacuation drills calmly and seriously is to make the correct response automatic rather than something you have to think through for the first time during an actual emergency. Treating a drill as a joke or a break from class does not just affect you — it slows the entire group's response.
