Learning objective: Students identify and describe cultural physical activity traditions from different regions of the world, recognizing them as valid forms of physical activity tied to community identity.
Geographic scope: World map with 6 marked regions
Purpose: Show that cultural physical activity traditions exist across the globe and are practiced with pride, not treated as "old-fashioned" or lesser than organized sports
Locations and markers:
- North America (Great Plains/Eastern Woodlands): Powwow dance traditions and the origins of lacrosse
- West Africa: Traditional dance forms tied to community celebrations and drumming
- Ireland: Step dancing traditions
- China: Tai Chi as a traditional movement practice
- Brazil: Capoeira, blending movement, music, and history
- Caribbean: Traditional jump-rope and rhyming games passed through generations
Interactive features:
- Click a marker to open an infobox with a respectful description of the tradition, what it involves physically, and its cultural significance
- Hover over a marker to see the tradition's name and region before clicking
Legend: Simple icon per tradition type (dance, sport, game, martial art)
Color scheme: Warm, neutral map palette; markers in a single friendly accent color so no region is visually emphasized over another
Responsive behavior: Map resizes to container width; markers remain clickable at all screen sizes; on narrow screens, marker list becomes a scrollable panel below the map
Implementation: Leaflet.js with a static base map and custom marker popups. All descriptions written respectfully, describing traditions as valid ongoing practices rather than historical curiosities.
