Overview

This workflow explains why a Learning Record Store creates value only when recorded evidence is carried through analysis to a useful educational decision or response.

Workflow Steps

  1. Learning Activity - A learner performs an observable action in a learning environment.
  2. Standardized Event or Record - The source translates the observation into a consistent event.
  3. LRS or Learning-Record Warehouse - Infrastructure validates and retains records from one or more systems.
  4. Aggregation and Analysis - Raw records become interpretable measures or derived evidence.
  5. Feedback or Action - The evidence informs a learner, teacher, administrator, or course author.

How to Use

  1. Follow the arrows from top to bottom to trace the evidence pipeline.
  2. Hover over a node to preview its explanation in the right panel.
  3. Select a node to keep its explanation visible while examining the workflow.
  4. Use the Tab and Enter keys to inspect nodes without a pointing device.

Learning Objectives

After using this diagram, students will be able to:

  • trace a learning observation from its source to an educational response;
  • explain the distinct role of an LRS and an analytics layer; and
  • identify why record collection alone does not improve learning.

Activities

  1. Trace the Evidence: Choose a quiz attempt or simulation action and explain what information must be preserved at each workflow step.
  2. Find the Missing Consumer: Describe what happens when an implementation stops at the LRS without aggregation or a downstream action.
  3. Compare Sources: Explain how LMS events, attendance, and simulation records could enter the same workflow while retaining their different contexts.

Assessment

  • Can the learner distinguish a standardized event from an analytic summary?
  • Can the learner explain why the LRS is not itself the final educational outcome?
  • Can the learner give a concrete example of feedback or action produced by the pipeline?
