Course Description Quality Assessment — Grade 1¶
Source Document¶

Summary¶
The Grade 1 course description is a well-structured, standards-traceable document derived from the 2025 Minnesota K-12 Health Academic Standards. It enumerates 24 benchmark-coded topics across five content strands (Food and Nutrition, Human Growth and Development, Mental and Emotional Health, Personal Health and Wellness, Personal Safety and Violence Prevention) plus a cross-cutting Skill Standards group, and organizes learning outcomes using the 2001 Bloom's Taxonomy (Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze — with Evaluate and Create deliberately thin/absent per the developmental design of the K-12 standards, and this is explicitly documented in the text rather than an oversight).
Because this is a Grade 1 (early elementary, beginning-reader) band, the topic set is intentionally narrow — identify/explain-level content and simple demonstration tasks rather than multi-step reasoning or design tasks. This assessment therefore evaluates the description against a right-sized concept target of approximately 50-55 concepts, not the skill's generic 200-concept default, which would force invented content not grounded in the standards.
Scoring Rubric¶
| Element | Points Possible | Points Awarded | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | 5 | 5 | Clear, descriptive: "Course Description — Grade 1" |
| Target Audience | 5 | 5 | Explicit: "Grade 1 students (age ~6-7) and their teachers" |
| Prerequisites | 5 | 5 | Explicit Kindergarten benchmark prerequisites, plus a "Bridging Concepts" section for students new to the band |
| Main Topics Covered | 10 | 10 | 24 benchmark-coded topics across 5 strands + Skill Standards, each with source code (e.g. 1.1.1.1) |
| Topics Excluded | 5 | 3 | No dedicated "excluded topics" section, though reading-level notes and explicit Evaluate/Create absence statements implicitly set scope boundaries |
| Learning Outcomes Header | 5 | 5 | Clear "Learning Outcomes" section grouped by Bloom's level |
| Remember Level | 10 | 10 | 10 specific, actionable, benchmark-traced outcomes |
| Understand Level | 10 | 10 | 13 specific, actionable, benchmark-traced outcomes |
| Apply Level | 10 | 8 | 3 outcomes present and concrete (demonstrate saying "no," communication, tracking behaviors), slightly thin relative to "multiple outcomes" criterion |
| Analyze Level | 10 | 7 | 2 outcomes present and clear, but fewer than ideal for full credit |
| Evaluate Level | 10 | 3 | Deliberately absent by MDE standards design; well-justified in text (true evaluative reasoning begins Grade 2-3), but rubric expects outcomes present |
| Create Level | 10 | 3 | Deliberately absent by MDE standards design; well-justified in text (design/construct tasks begin Grade 2), but rubric expects outcomes present |
| Descriptive Context | 5 | 5 | Strong context: reading-level/cognitive-demand section, bridging-concepts section, standards traceability, benchmark code key |
| Total | 100 | 87 |
Strengths¶
-
Every topic traces to a specific MDE benchmark code, giving the learning graph strong provenance.
-
Clear five-strand + Skill Standards structure maps cleanly onto a taxonomy consistent with the Kindergarten band's scheme.
-
Key Vocabulary section (14 terms) gives ready-made concept candidates.
-
Explicit "Bridging Concepts for Students New to This Band" section clarifies which Kindergarten-level ideas are assumed but not re-taught.
-
Explicit, documented rationale for the thinness of Evaluate- and Create-level content avoids the false impression of an oversight and matches the developmental progression described in the standards.
Gaps¶
-
No dedicated "Topics Excluded" section (partial credit given based on related context elsewhere in the document).
-
Apply and Analyze outcomes are present but modest in count, reflecting the developmental level of the band (early elementary, identify/explain plus simple demonstration) rather than a document defect.
-
Evaluate- and Create-level outcomes are explicitly deferred to Grade 2-3, which is appropriate for this band but caps rubric points under a generic scoring template designed for adult/higher-ed courses.
Concept Count Guidance¶
Per explicit run-level override, this band targets approximately 50-55 concepts (not 200), built only from the 24 enumerated benchmarks, the 14 key vocabulary terms, and a small number of clearly-implied bridging concepts. This is appropriate given the identify/explain-level scope of Grade 1 health standards, and keeps the graph comparable in density to the Kindergarten band's 45-concept graph.
Overall Quality Score: 87 / 100¶
This score is above both the skill's general 70-point proceed threshold and its 80-point "good quality" guidance. Proceeding automatically with learning graph generation per run authorization (unattended run — no user pause required).
