About This MicroSim¶
The idea trap is hard to spot from the inside because it looks like diligence. This MicroSim puts the two ways a founder can spend the next hour side by side. On the left, Unrefined Business Idea and Refine the Plan form a closed loop: pitch decks, logos, and spreadsheets feel like progress, but the arrow always leads back to the same unanswered question. On the right, a straight path runs from the idea to a Real-World Test and ends at Validated Learning, a real answer of yes or no.
The example follows Jordan, the founder from Chapter 1 who wants to drive a dog-grooming van to customers' homes. Two counters make the contrast concrete: Hours invested climbs on both paths, but Real customer answers only moves when Jordan runs a real-world test.
How to Use¶
- Click any box to read what it means, with Jordan's version of it.
- Hover over (or tap) an arrow. The loop and the forward path each explain what kind of path they are.
- Click Refine the Plan several times. Watch Jordan circle the loop while hours pile up and customer answers stay at zero.
- Click Test with Customers. Jordan moves down the forward path, and each test adds real answers, including answers of "no."
- Click Reset to start over.
On narrow screens the loop sits on top and the forward path runs down the right side.

Lesson Plan¶
Audience¶
Adult early-stage entrepreneurs and aspiring founders in a live virtual cohort.
Learning Objective¶
Participants will be able to differentiate productive early-stage activity (real-world testing) from unproductive activity (endless refinement) and recognize when they are personally in the idea trap.
Bloom Level: Analyze (L4). Bloom Verb: differentiate.
Duration¶
10 minutes
Prerequisites¶
- Chapter 1 reading on unrefined concepts and the idea trap
- An unrefined business idea of their own
Activities¶
- Explore (3 min): Individually, click all four boxes and hover both arrows.
- Predict and test (3 min): Before touching the buttons, predict how many times Jordan must click Refine the Plan before the customer-answers counter moves. Then try it, and compare with one click of Test with Customers.
- Breakout discussion (4 min): In breakout rooms, each person lists the last three things they did for their own idea and sorts each one onto the loop or the forward path.
Assessment¶
- Can the participant explain why refining a plan never changes the customer-answers count?
- Can the participant name one "forward path" action they will take before the next session?
- Does the participant recognize that a "no" from a real customer is still validated learning?
