This Grade 2 section of the textbook is organized into 7 chapters covering 55 concepts from the Grade 2 learning graph.

Chapter Overview

  1. Health Basics, Friendships, and Feelings - Introduces the idea of health itself, peer relationships, and early emotional-health tools like coping strategies, personal space, boundaries, and I-statements.
  2. Food, Energy, and Safe Eating - Explores what food groups do for the body, how variety and energy support growth, and why safe storage, preparation, and handling of food matter.
  3. Handling Conflict and Kind Play - Builds on early emotional-health tools to address conflict resolution, managing strong emotions, playful interaction, and the effects of teasing.
  4. Staying Healthy in Our Environment - Covers protecting the body from environmental health risks, the value of physical activity, and how germs spread and can be prevented.
  5. Technology, Community, and Emergency Safety - Addresses safe technology use, encouraging safe choices through community values, staying safe during drills, and finding health helpers.
  6. Body Safety and Speaking Up - A focused chapter on recognizing unwanted touch and practicing how to say no or exit an unsafe situation.
  7. Influences, Decisions, and Personal Goals - Ties the band together with how family, school, and media influence health behaviors, how to weigh decisions, and how to set and reflect on personal health goals.

How to Use This Textbook

Work through the chapters in order — each one builds on concepts introduced earlier, so completing chapters 1 through 6 will prepare students for the decision-making and goal-setting skills in Chapter 7. Teachers may revisit Chapter 6 (Body Safety and Speaking Up) as a standalone lesson whenever a sensitive-topics refresher is needed, since it does not depend on chapters after it.
