What Food Groups Do for the Body¶
Every food we eat belongs to a food group, and each food group has a special job to do inside the body. Food group function means understanding what each group of foods actually does for you — it is not enough to just name the groups, we want to know why they matter.
Talking points for read-aloud:
- Ask the class: "What do you think happens inside your body after you eat breakfast?"
- Guide answers toward growing, moving, healing, and thinking.

Trying a Variety of Foods¶
No single food group can do every job by itself. That is why variety of foods matters: eating different foods from different groups — and different foods within each group — helps the body get everything it needs to grow.
Think of it this way: if a student only ate bread every day, their body would have plenty of energy but would be missing the vitamins from fruits and vegetables and the muscle-building power of protein. Trying new foods, including foods from different cultures and family traditions, is one of the best ways to make sure the body gets a full set of tools for growing.
Some ways to try more variety:
- Add one new fruit or vegetable to a plate each week.
- Try a food from a classmate's or neighbor's family tradition.
- Choose a different grain, like brown rice or whole wheat bread, instead of the same one every day.
- Notice the colors on your plate — different colors often mean different vitamins.
Helpful Tip
A fun way to remember variety is to "eat the rainbow" — try to get a few different colors of fruits and vegetables on your plate each day!
Food Energy: Fuel for Growing and Playing¶
Food energy is the power that food gives your body to move, grow, think, and even just breathe and stay warm. Every single thing your body does — running at recess, solving a math problem, healing a scraped knee — uses energy that came from food you ate earlier.
A simple cause-and-effect way to think about it: when you eat, your body breaks the food down and turns it into energy; when you use that energy all day, you start to feel hungry again, which is your body's signal that it needs more fuel.
- Eating breakfast gives you energy to focus in the morning.
- Running out of food energy can make a person feel tired, cranky, or unable to concentrate.
- Growing bodies need food energy not just to move, but to build new bone, muscle, and skin as they grow taller.
Ever feel grumpy or tired before lunchtime? That's a totally normal signal that your body needs more food energy — noticing that feeling is a great health skill.

Comparing Drink Choices: Sugar and Caffeine¶
Not all drinks are the same, and comparing them is an important health skill. Two things to look for and compare in a drink are sugar in drinks and caffeine in drinks.
Sugar in drinks means the extra sweet stuff added to many juices, sodas, and flavored drinks. A little sugar occasionally is not harmful, but drinks with a lot of added sugar, especially every day, can lead to problems like tooth decay and feeling tired after a sugar "crash."
Caffeine in drinks is a substance found in some sodas, some teas, and energy drinks that can make a person's heart beat faster and make it harder to fall asleep at night. Caffeine is generally not recommended for children, so recognizing which drinks contain it is an important skill.
Read the Label
Some drinks that taste fruity or fun might still have caffeine or a lot of added sugar hiding inside. It's always smart to ask a trusted adult to help read the label before trying a new drink.
Comparing drink choices means looking at two or more drinks side by side and deciding which one is the healthier choice based on what is inside them. This is a genuine comparison skill for Grade 2 — not just naming what is in one drink, but weighing several drinks against each other.

Why Food Safety Matters¶
Choosing healthy foods and drinks is only part of the picture — keeping food safe is just as important. Food that is not stored, prepared, or handled safely can make people sick, even if the food itself is healthy.
There are three parts to food safety that second graders should know about: storing food, preparing food, and handling food. Each one happens at a different point before food reaches your plate.

Food safety isn't just one rule — it's three steps working together: keeping food stored right, preparing it carefully, and handling it with clean hands.
Food Storage Safety¶
Food storage safety means keeping food at the right temperature and in the right place so it does not spoil or grow harmful germs. Some foods need to stay cold in the refrigerator, some need to stay frozen, and some are safe at room temperature in a sealed container.
Simple food storage safety rules:
- Put milk, eggs, and meat in the refrigerator right away.
- Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible to stay cold.
- Check that leftovers go into the fridge soon after a meal, not left out for hours.
- Store raw meat on a lower shelf so its juices cannot drip onto other foods.
Food Preparation Safety¶
Food preparation safety means using safe practices while food is being cooked or made ready to eat — like washing fruits and vegetables, cooking meat thoroughly, and keeping raw and cooked foods separate.
Simple food preparation safety rules:
- Wash fruits and vegetables under running water before eating them.
- Use a different cutting board for raw meat than for vegetables.
- Make sure meat is cooked all the way through, not left raw or pink inside.
- Keep pets and pests away from food preparation areas.
Food Handling Safety¶
Food handling safety means the everyday habits a person uses whenever they touch food — this is the part every second grader can practice themselves, every day.
Simple food handling safety rules:
- Wash your hands with soap before touching or eating food.
- Use clean utensils and plates, not ones that touched raw meat.
- Do not share drinks or food that has already touched someone else's mouth.
- Tell a trusted adult if food smells strange, looks moldy, or seems spoiled.
