What Is an Environmental Health Risk?

An environmental health risk is anything in the world around us — in the air, water, ground, or nearby objects — that could hurt our bodies if we are not careful. Environmental health risks are different from germs or foods; they come from the environment itself, like the sun overhead, a loud sound, a bottle of cleaning spray, or water that is not safe to drink.

Second graders encounter environmental health risks almost every day, often without noticing them. Understanding what they are is the first step toward protecting the body. Common environmental health risks include:

Sun and Noise Protection

Sun and noise protection means using specific habits and tools to keep sunlight and loud sounds from damaging the skin and ears. These two risks are grouped together because both come from everyday parts of life — being outside and hearing sounds — that become safer with simple protective steps.

Protecting skin from the sun:

Unsafe Chemicals and Water

Unsafe chemicals and water refers to substances that look harmless — or even inviting — but can make a person very sick if touched, tasted, or swallowed. This includes cleaning products, medicines that belong to someone else, and water that has not been made safe to drink.

Some important safety rules:

  • Never touch, smell, or taste a cleaning product, spray, or medicine without a trusted adult.
  • Many unsafe chemicals are kept in bottles that look like drinks or candy — always check with an adult first.
  • Not all water is safe to drink. Water from a pond, puddle, or unfamiliar source may contain unsafe chemicals or germs.
  • Only drink water that a trusted adult says is safe, such as from a home tap, a water fountain, or a sealed bottle.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is any movement of the body that uses energy and helps a person stay healthy and strong — running, jumping, dancing, swimming, biking, and playing active games all count. Physical activity supports the body in many ways at once.

Regular physical activity helps the body by:

  • Building strong muscles and bones.
  • Keeping the heart and lungs strong.
  • Helping the body use energy from food (connecting back to what students learned about food and energy).
  • Improving mood and helping manage strong emotions (connecting back to Chapter 3).
  • Helping the body rest better at night.

Physical activity does not have to mean a formal sport. Climbing on playground equipment, playing tag, riding a scooter, and dancing to a favorite song are all physical activity too.

Cultural Physical Activity

Cultural physical activity means active games, dances, and traditions that come from a specific culture or community and have often been passed down for generations. These activities are physical activity and a way that communities share stories, celebrations, and belonging.

Communities around the world have wonderful traditions of active play. A few examples:

  • Jump-rope games with rhymes and chants, played in many communities across generations.
  • Tinikling, a dance from the Philippines where dancers step between long bamboo poles in rhythm.
  • Powwow dancing, practiced by many Indigenous nations in North America, with regalia, drumming, and specific dance styles passed down through families.
  • Line dances and circle dances, found in many cultures, where a whole group moves together in patterns.
  • Traditional ball and tag games, played by children in cultures all over the world, each with its own rules and rhymes.

No single tradition here is more "normal" than another — every culture has its own active games and dances, and all of them count as physical activity that also carries meaning and history for the people who practice them. Learning about these traditions helps us move our bodies and respect where they come from.

Germs

Germs are tiny living things — far too small to see without a microscope — that can enter the body and sometimes cause illness. Germs are all around us: in the air, on surfaces, in food, and in water. Most germs do not make us sick, but some kinds can.

A few key facts about germs for Grade 2 students:

  • Germs are so small that thousands could fit on the head of a pin.
