This is the final chapter of the Grade 2 book, and it works differently than the chapters before it. Instead of a single safety or wellness topic, it steps back and asks: where do health habits come from, and how does a person get better at choosing and reaching them? The chapter moves through three connected skills — noticing an influence, weighing a decision, and setting a goal — before landing on the idea that a Grade 2 student can also be a positive influence for someone else.

As with every chapter in this book, the text below is written for you, the teacher, to read, adapt, and narrate aloud. The interactive MicroSims are the place where students do their own thinking and clicking.

What Is an Influence?

An influence is anything that shapes the choices a person makes or the way a person acts, without necessarily making the choice for them. Influences are everywhere, and most days a student experiences dozens of them without noticing: a parent packing a lunch, a rule posted in the school hallway, a jingle heard during a cartoon, a friend suggesting a game at recess. None of these things force a choice, but each one nudges it.

It helps students to sort influences into a few familiar sources:

  • People close to a student, such as family members, teachers, and friends
  • Places a student spends time, such as home, school, and community spaces
  • Messages a student sees or hears, such as advertisements, shows, apps, and packaging

Recognizing an influence is the first step toward deciding whether to follow it. Not every influence points toward a healthy choice, and a student does not have to follow an influence just because it is there. Naming the influence out loud — "That commercial is trying to get me to want sugary cereal" — is itself a useful health skill.

Family and School Influence

Family and school influence describes the specific ways that a student's household and school shape health practices — through routines, rules, modeling, and direct teaching. A family might set a bedtime, choose the food available at home, or show through everyday habits (like buckling a seatbelt without being asked) what healthy behavior looks like. A school might set a handwashing routine, offer recess and physical education, or post rules about kindness and safety.

Family and school influences often work by repetition and modeling rather than a single lecture. A student who sees an adult wash their hands before every meal is likely to absorb that habit even without being told "always do this." This is one reason adults are encouraged to model the behaviors they want children to adopt — a theme this chapter returns to at the very end.

Media Influence

Media influence is the way that television, video, apps, games, packaging, and advertising shape what a student believes, wants, or does — often by being entertaining, repeating a message many times, or using bright colors and catchy music. Unlike a family rule or a school policy, media messages are usually created by companies trying to sell a product, so they do not always point toward the healthiest choice.

A student does not need to be able to name every advertising technique to build this skill. It is enough to practice a simple pause-and-question habit:

  1. Notice the message ("This show says this cereal will make me a superhero").
  2. Ask who made the message and why ("A company wants me to buy their cereal").
  3. Decide separately whether the choice is actually healthy, using what they already know about food, safety, or activity.

A Simple Question to Ask

Scout with a helpful tip Next time you see an ad, try asking: "Who made this, and what do they want me to do?" That question alone helps you think instead of just reacting.

Active Listening

Active listening is paying close, respectful attention to a speaker — with eyes, ears, and body — and responding in a way that shows the message was understood. Grade 2 students met active listening in an earlier chapter as a way to support a friend's feelings; here it returns as a tool for understanding influences and decisions, especially when a family member, teacher, or trusted adult is explaining a rule or offering advice.

Active listening in Grade 2 has a few simple, practiced parts:

  • Facing the speaker and giving quiet attention
  • Waiting for a pause instead of interrupting
  • Nodding or giving a small verbal cue ("okay," "I see") to show understanding
  • Asking a short question if something is unclear, such as "Why do we do it that way?"

When a trusted adult explains a health rule, active listening helps a student understand not just what to do, but why it matters — and that "why" makes the rule easier to remember and follow later, on their own.

Health Decision Options and Decision Outcomes

Once a student notices an influence, the next skill is making a decision about it. Health decision options are the different choices available to a person facing a health-related situation — usually there is more than one reasonable path, not just one right answer and one wrong answer. Decision outcomes are the results, good or less good, that follow from each option — including how the choice affects the student's own body, feelings, and the people around them.

Consider a simple, familiar example: a student is offered a sugary drink at a birthday party.

  • Option 1: Drink the sugary drink. Possible outcome: it tastes exciting in the moment, but too much sugar can lead to a stomachache or an energy crash later.
  • Option 2: Ask for water or milk instead. Possible outcome: less exciting in the moment, but the body feels steadier afterward.
  • Option 3: Have a small amount of the sugary drink and also drink water. Possible outcome: a balance that lets the student enjoy the party while limiting how much sugar they take in.

There is rarely only one "correct" option — the skill is learning to name the options and think ahead about what each one might lead to, rather than picking automatically.

Think Ahead Before You Choose

There Isn't Just One Right Answer

Scout encouraging Weighing options can feel tricky at first, and that's okay. You're not looking for a trick question — you're just practicing thinking ahead. That gets easier every time you try it.

Goal Setting

Goal setting is choosing a specific, personal health target that a student wants to work toward, such as drinking more water, trying one new vegetable each week, or getting outside to play every day after school. A good Grade 2 goal is small enough to reach in a short time and clear enough that the student can tell whether they reached it.

A simple goal has a few parts a Grade 2 student can name:

  • What the goal is (drink water instead of soda most days)
  • How long the goal lasts (this week, or for the next two weeks)
  • How the student will know they reached it (counting the days, or a sticker on a calendar)

Goal-Supporting Actions

Goal-supporting actions are the specific, repeatable steps a student takes that move them toward their goal. Setting a goal names the destination; goal-supporting actions are the everyday steps that get a student there. For a goal like "drink water instead of soda this week," supporting actions might include:

  1. Filling a water bottle each morning
  2. Asking for water at meals instead of soda
  3. Keeping a small chart to mark each successful day

Without supporting actions, a goal stays a wish. With them, it becomes a plan.

Reflecting on Goal Progress

Reflecting on goal progress means looking back, after some time has passed, at how the goal-supporting actions actually went — what worked, what was hard, and what the student might try differently next time. Reflection is not about grading the goal as a pure success or failure; it is about noticing patterns and adjusting.

A student reflecting on a goal might ask:

  • Did I do the supporting actions most days, or only sometimes?
  • What made it easy on the days it worked?
  • What got in the way on the days it didn't?
  • Do I want to keep the same goal, adjust it, or try something new?

This connects directly to an earlier Grade 2 skill: recognizing how current practices and behaviors make you feel. Part of good reflection is simply noticing feelings — proud, tired, disappointed, motivated — and treating those feelings as useful information rather than something to ignore.

Modeling Positive Health Choices

The chapter's final concept brings everything full circle. Modeling positive health choices means showing healthy behavior through one's own actions so that other people — younger students, classmates, or family members — see it and are influenced by it, the same way this chapter opened with family and school influencing a Grade 2 student. A student who chooses water at lunch, speaks kindly during a disagreement, or wears a helmet while biking is not just making a private choice — they are quietly becoming an influence for someone else, just like the influences described at the start of this chapter.
