Description

Put the four startup steps and the three shutdown steps of a robot arm in order. In each of eight rounds you see the steps that are already done and choose the next one from three choices. Used in Chapter 18.

Explore mode lists the seven steps in order, with the reason for the place of each one. The quiz then works through a startup and a shutdown, one step at a time. You choose the next step in the menu, press Check, and read why that step comes next.

Lesson Plan

Grade level: Middle school and up (age 12+). Time: 5 to 10 minutes.

  1. Read the seven steps. In Explore mode, say what each step makes safe for the step after it.
  2. Sequence. Press Start. In each round, read what is already done, then choose the next step and press Check. You get one try for each round.
  3. Read the reason. The feedback names the correct step and gives the reason. Mastery is 7 of 8.
  4. Think about it. Two of the steps can only be done by a person. Which ones, and why can a program not do them?

The checks come first and the stop is cleared after them. Torque is cut last, with the gripper empty and the arm parked, because an arm without torque sags and drops what it holds.
