Description¶
Look at eight numbered items in a schematic desk scene with a robot arm and classify each one as a pinch point, a collision hazard, an electrical hazard or acceptable. Used in Chapter 3.
The scene is a schematic, not a photograph of a real desk. The left part shows the desk from above: an SO-ARM101 follower inside a taped circle (its work envelope), a laptop, a power supply with its cable, a cup of water, a sleeve and an E-stop button. A view from above cannot show the gripper jaws or the gap at the elbow, so the right part shows the arm from the side, drawn by the shared robot-arm-lib.js library.
Each of the eight items has a numbered ring. In the quiz, the ring of the item being asked about is drawn thick and red.
Lesson Plan¶
Grade level: Middle school and up (age 12+). Time: 5 to 10 minutes.
- Explore. Hover over or click each numbered ring to read the name of the item. No classes are shown yet.
- Start the quiz. Choose Quiz in the menu. The sim highlights item 1.
- Classify. Ask how the item could cause harm: by trapping, by striking, by electricity, or not at all. Press one of the four class buttons. You get one attempt per item.
- Read the reason, then press Next item.
- Review. The last screen lists the eight items with their classes. Mastery is 7 of 8.
- Think about it. Three of the eight items are pinch points, and only one of them is the gripper. What do the other two have in common with it?
