Ancient History

Chronos the Tortoise is the mascot for the Ancient History textbook, which covers the human story from cosmic origins through 1200 CE. The name Chronos is the Greek personification of time itself — the same root that gives us chronology, chronicle, and anachronism — and the tortoise is the canonical animal symbol of longevity, patience, and the long view. Chronos was chosen because ancient history is, more than any other subject, the discipline of deep time: a learner has to comfortably move between thousand-year and ten-thousand-year horizons, and a Galápagos-style tortoise (a species that routinely outlives the humans who study it) is the perfect embodied reminder of that scale. The choice is exceptionally strong because the name and the species both encode load-bearing ideas — time and longevity — making Chronos one of the gallery's tightest examples of subject-coupled mascot design.
