Modeling Healthcare Data¶
Sage the Octopus is the mascot for Modeling Healthcare Data with Graphs, a textbook on representing and analyzing healthcare data with graph databases and graph analytics. Octopuses have a famously distributed nervous system — roughly two-thirds of their neurons live in their arms rather than their brain — which makes each arm capable of semi-independent sensing, a working biological analogue for a graph database's model of many locally-connected nodes rather than one central table. That same structure makes the octopus the mascot for Olli in this gallery's bioinformatics book, and it fits healthcare graph modeling for the same underlying reason: both domains are about relationships distributed across many connected points rather than isolated records. Sage was chosen to put that intuition in front of the learner on every page — eight arms, each locally aware, is what a well-modeled healthcare graph looks like when it works. This is one of the gallery's strongest mascots, though it shares its first name with Sage the Fox in the Algebra I book, a naming collision worth resolving in a future revision.
