Theory Of Knowledge

Sofia the Owl is the mascot for the Theory of Knowledge textbook. The name Sofia is the Greek root of philosophy (literally "love of wisdom") and the personification of wisdom in the early Christian tradition, while the owl is wisdom's most enduring visual symbol. Sofia was chosen because Theory of Knowledge — the IB Diploma's epistemology course — asks students to interrogate how we come to know what we know, and the mascot's name and species jointly invoke the long tradition of philosophical inquiry the course continues. The choice is strong because the name and species reinforce each other, and the owl's natural posture (still, watchful, asking who?) matches the disciplinary stance of the field.
