Health Education¶
Scout is the mascot for the Health Education textbook. Scout is a golden retriever, a breed widely recognized as the most reassuring companion archetype, which matters for a K-12 curriculum that spans sensitive strands including personal safety, substance use awareness, and human growth and development alongside nutrition and fitness. The name Scout reinforces the idea of a mascot who is always alert and looking out for the reader's wellbeing, directly tying into the Personal Safety and Violence Prevention strand without leaning on cleverness, speed, or bravado the way many animal mascots do. Scout was chosen deliberately over species that read as clever or fast, because a health curriculum for young readers needs warmth and steadiness above all, especially in the chapters covering the most sensitive material. The choice is good because the character's calm, watchful temperament matches the tone the subject demands across its full age range, though it is a supportive rather than a load-bearing conceptual mascot — the dog does not literally encode a health-education idea the way, say, an octopus encodes distributed computing.
