1. Scene Safety — Check for hazards before approaching.
2. Check Responsiveness — Tap and shout as taught to see whether the person responds.
3. Activate Emergency Response — Call emergency services or direct a specific person to call.
4. Retrieve the AED — Send someone to get an AED while help is activated.
5. Hand Position — Use the hand position taught in current certified training.
6. Chest Compressions — High-quality compressions help circulate blood until advanced care arrives.
7. Open the AED — Turn on or open the AED and follow its spoken and visual prompts.
8. Place Pads — Place pads exactly as the diagrams on the pads show.
9. Clear for Analysis — Make sure no one touches the person while the AED analyzes.
10. Shock If Advised — Deliver a shock only when the AED instructs it.
11. Resume CPR — Resume compressions promptly after analysis or a shock as directed.
12. Professional Handoff — Continue until the person responds, the scene becomes unsafe, or trained responders take over.
