  1. Ask Before Getting Close — Permission helps a person choose whether a hug, touch, or close game feels welcome.
  2. Notice a Step Back — Stepping back, turning away, or becoming quiet can signal a need for more space.
  3. Mutual Play Feels Different — Playful interaction is shared fun when everyone is participating willingly.
  4. Stop When the Signal Changes — A game that began as fun should stop when someone looks uncomfortable or says stop.
  5. Space Needs Vary — People prefer different distances depending on the person, place, activity, and day.
  6. Make Room to Move — Respectful space includes room for bodies, mobility devices, and safe movement.
  7. Interrupt Teasing — Teasing is not playful when it embarrasses, excludes, or continues after discomfort.
  8. Check In and Repair — After a boundary mistake, listening and changing the behavior are part of repair.
  9. Get Trusted Help — Adult help is appropriate when teasing continues, safety is involved, or words feel hard.
